hmm....iv been playing bass for roughly a year and a half but ive never really looked much into the theory (mostly because it confuses me!), your sheet really helps with scale positions (now when our guitarist says hes playing in g minor il now what to do!!) but what does the chord formula's bit mean (the table on the right handside with a series of numbers)? ive tried to understand the circle of fiths but i cant make any sense of it either.
yeah but dont think in terms of that scale shape... that limits you... think of the notes that are in that shape... that helps alot |
Those are the notes that make up that chord. so if it says 1st 3rd 5th, to build that chord you would take the scale of the chord you wanted. If it was an A major chord then the notes would be 1st=A 3=C# 5th=E. you would just go in the order the scales are written out in the table beside the formulas.
The circle of 5ths has many uses, you can build scales from it, chord progressions. Aslo when writing songs notes closer sound better, and going clock wise makes the song sound like it is moving forward, and going counterclock wise makes the song sound like it is slowing down.
thanks |
Bumping because its ectremely useful.

^^agreed.
Shame I thought Jamesr came back :upset: |
Awesome.

Worth posting a reply to. Very nice and organized :)
|
I've had this on my desktop since it was posted.... long time. Good stuff
|
One thing though, I thought the 17th fret, G string was middle C, not the 5th.
Other than that, it was great, recommended to any bassist. |
Nope dude, 5th fret on the G is middle C
|

Awesome sheet, very nice indeed, thanks :D
I shouldv'e taken lessons :( I don't get 95% of whats on the 5 string cheat sheet.
I'd reccomend you start learning some theory. It's not that hard - I dont have a teacher either, so I taught myself theory. There is quite a lot of stuf to learn though (a teacher could be handy to pick out the things that are most important). All the stuf on there is really useful to know. |
so amazing....every time i use it
damn you all i thought there was a NEWER version. |
if you really want to help out a smaller percent of MXERS
make a lefty version. All you have to do is flip the diagrams horizontally. im pretty sure u wont, but itd be awesome if you did. ud prolly be the one of the few people who would actually do it in the world yes in the world =) |

quick question - how come you've shown only those 5 patterns out of the 7 possible for each of the scales?
Just wondered - I'm going to set it upon myself to learn those patterns, (5 is easier than 7 and I wasnt sure how to restrict myself before), but I just wondered if there was any reason like "those are the most important because..." |

You were close. It's in the Resources section, where it's been on the first page more or less ever since it was first posted. |
