The one highly recomended Rush album I don't have is Test For Echo.
I have like the first 9 or 10 albums, and my favourite is Caress Of Steel, I like 2112 a lot too.
Actually, every Rush album I have rules.

IAJP 03-03-2005 02:21 PM

Sorry, I just discovered that one of the albums that is highly rated and I don't have is called

"Vapour Trails"
Any good?

Steerpike 03-03-2005 02:27 PM

It depends on who you ask. Personally, I like Vapor Trails. It was another change of pace for Rush, offering a raw, hard rock sound but still maintaining those progressive elements.

Vapor Trail, Earthshine, Secret Touch, Sweet Miracle, and Ghost Rider are some of my favorites.

IAJP 03-03-2005 02:35 PM

Thanks,
and just as some general discussion, what is your favourite Rush album from the 70's?

Mars Volta 03-03-2005 02:45 PM

Ive got 2112, I like that but my favourite song I have heard by them that is not on there is Roll the Bones

synzephyr 03-03-2005 02:58 PM

I Love Rush, I'm listening alot to their music (Rush Radio) it's amazing.
Neil Pert is overrated, much like Portnoy. They both wish they were Bruford. If they don't they ought to.
There's no way Peart and Pornoy are overated. They are both two very creative, inspirational and exceptional drummers. And since when did you know that they wish they were Bruford?

What Rush albums would you recommend? I'm interested in hearing more of their material.

IAJP 03-03-2005 03:11 PM

"Neil Peart" and "Is Overated" in the same sentance is laughable,
He's technically one of the best Rock drummers of all time.
What Rush albums would you recommend? I'm interested in hearing more of their material.
Yes.
I'll give you a brief overview:
For a great Hard Rock Album:
Caress Of Steel,
For a great Prog Rock album:
Hemispheres,
2112,
For a great album in general:
Moving Pictures.
Get all their albums from the 70's! I can't stress that enough!

I think that you are forgeting every time the MASTERPIECE called A Farewell to Kings.

thunderzstruck 03-03-2005 04:17 PM
Alex Lifeson is one of my guitar influences. His rhythm parts are just as much fun to play as his solos. And unlike some guitarists, he actually knows how to make good use of effects.
Same here man. Alex uses his effects so well.

thunderzstruck 03-03-2005 04:20 PM
It's strange. They're not the most energetic showmen (especially since they're in their 50s now), but they have this infectious sense of happiness. They really enjoy playing up on stage and the audience picks up on it.

It's also amazing how they realize more so than many other bands that a concert isn't just an aural experience. They put on a kick-*** light show as well and try to throw in a little humor (i.e. the dryers).
Yeah, when you watch their concerts you can just tell their having a great time. Not said with Dream Theatre. John just... stands there.

I could see how some people don't like Geddy Lee's vocals but I do.

IAJP 03-03-2005 04:20 PM

Yeah I like A Farewell to Kings, It doesn't stand up as well to Hemispheres, although it does have the Cygnus X-1 Book I on it, which is amazing.

thunderzstruck 03-03-2005 04:24 PM

I only have their greatest hits "The spirit of radio" and 2112. I'm looking to buy a few more since I have listened to those to death

dustyboy316 03-03-2005 04:27 PM
3 Musical Geniuses = Rush

I saw Rush on thier Power Windows Tour . Neil Peart best drummer ever PERIOD.

I also saw them on the tour when they had the song "Time Stands Still" cant remember the name of the album or tour(smoked way too much weed back then).
Time Stand Still was off of 2112.

I love Rush, theyt're my fav band. Just watched Rush in Rio like 2 hours ago haha. There's rumours that my city is tryin to get them to play a concert here, and I hope we do.

Alex Lifeson is on of my fav guitarist's. He is so original. Neil Peart is the best drummer and Geddy has a nice voice and he's a really good bassist.

dustyboy316 03-03-2005 04:32 PM
Oh and Geddy Lee's singing is the most annoying sound I've ever heard.

Neil Pert is overrated, much like Portnoy. They both wish they were Bruford. If they don't they ought to.

I don't have much to say about Alex Lifeson.

As a band... Ugh it's all just far too overrated. I can't stand it.
You couldn't be more wrong. Neil was nominated for a grammy for his AMAZING drum solo O Baterista from Rush in Rio. Listen to him paly, his fill's are amazingly quick, his rhythms are very od dbut work in perfectu nison with the song and he also writes Rush's lyrics.

thunderzstruck 03-03-2005 04:43 PM

Anyone tell you, you should reupload your avatar?

dustyboy316 03-03-2005 04:48 PM
Anyone tell you, you should reupload your avatar?
hgaha yah I know, but I don;t have another copy of it. And I made it so it's the only one left hahaha. And I'm too lazy to get a new one...

thunderzstruck 03-03-2005 04:56 PM

Ok, I didn't know if anyone has told you. It looks... intresting :thumb:

Hammer_of_the_Gods 03-03-2005 05:13 PM

Rush = Pure musical genius.

Saw the 30th Anniversary Tour. All I can say was it kicked ass!

dustyboy316 03-03-2005 05:13 PM
Ok, I didn't know if anyone has told you. It looks... intresting :thumb:
Yeah well Eminem won an Oscar.

Does that make him talented? No.

And do you ever watch the Grammys? Ever notice that... THEY'RE COMPLETE BULL****?

How about this then:

- 1976, the break-through album 2112 sells 1 million copies.
- 1977, Closer to the Heart is the band's first internationally charted single.
- 1980, Rush and each individual member place in the top ten in every applicable category in Sounds and Melody Maker Polls in Britain.
- 1990, Rush is voted Group of the Decade in Canada in recognition of their musical and cultural impact from 1980-1990.
- 1990, Rush wins the coveted and prestigious Mayor's Award at hte Toronto Music Awards.
- 1992, Rush was honoured with the "Harold Moon Award" by the Society of Composers, Authors, and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN). It is the most prestigious songwriter's award in Canada.
- 1993, Rush are chosen as recipient of the "Toronto Arts Award". The award, presented on behalf of the Arts Foundation of Toronto, recognizes the recipient's entire body of work through artistic excellence and contributions to the arts and culture of Toronto.
- 1996, Rush release their 21st gold album "Test For Echo". According to the Recording Industry Association (RIAA) this places them in a third place tie with Kiss. What makes this feat so remarkable is that it extends their consecutive gold certification streak to 21, their entire catalogue of albums.
- 1997, Each of the band's three members are recognized as "Officers of the Order Of Canada". This prestigious honour reflects the unique contribution to Canada, and indeed the world, that Rush have made since their very early origins in Toronto, and throughout their twenty-three year recording career. This is the first time the Order of Canada is given to a group rather than an individual.
- 1997, The Foundation Forum and F Musicfest have announced Rush this year's recipient of the "Concrete/Foundations Outstanding Contribution to Music Award". Rush joins a distinguished list of receipts including Van Halen, KISS, Ozzy Osbourne and Alice Cooper.
- 1999, Rush was inducted into Canada's Walk Of Fame in Toronto. The other inductees included that year are David Croneberg, Celine Dion, and Buffy Sainte- Marie.

That's all off the official website, and there's more that I left out for the sake of brevity.

The group has made a massive cultural impact and achieved a degree of immortality through it.

The Minstrel in the Gallery 03-03-2005 06:07 PM

I do believe Rush is long overdue for an official thread........

Okay. All I was saying is I don't like them. I don't need proof that they made a huge cultural impact, I already know all this.

Hitler made a huge cultural impact too.

That is possibly the most assinine analogy I've ever seen on this board. And coming from me, that's saying something.

Actually Emninem is talented, whether you like him or not. Just because you don't like his music dosen't make him untalented (Same with Neil).

1) Every member of Rush is a better musician in every sense of the word than you'll ever be.

2) At least Rush left an eternal mark on the world and was part of forming the culture of the world, all you'll ever be is a zit on the @ss of society.

Distant Echoes 03-03-2005 08:05 PM

i think Rush is probably the most respectable band around. Their still going strong since late 60's/early 70's, never got in any fights (regrouped/broke up), and have the most well balenced music capabilities on all thier instruments. Very underated though...I never hear them on my classic or modern rock stations, and most people have never heard of them (around here).

EDIT: Could a mod make this an official thread? i dont know if their is one for Rush, but i know Id be a regular in here if it was.
