im sorry, but OI is NOT a sub-genre of punk, it came before punk, the culture was around before punk, thus assuring its stance as NOT being a sub-genre of punk...just thought you should know... :thumb:
Truth^

It is associated with the punk scene, and is enjoyed by punks, but offically is not a sub genre.

Joe 11-27-2004 03:42 PM

so then why does every punk band have to use oi?

SickOnTheBusYouCunt 11-27-2004 03:43 PM

why do ska bands say 'hey'?

Agreed there.

Sick_boy_Samhain 11-29-2004 04:38 AM

You ignorant kids!
First punk records by Ramones, ****ed, Pistols and Buzzcocks were released in 1976. and early 1977.
First streetpunk record was "I don't wanna" by Sham 69 in middle of 1977., but all this streetpunk really started in 1978. with records by bands like Menace, **** Sparrer, Skrewdriver...

First "official" oi compilation is "Oi! The Album", released in 1980. or 1981. with bands like Angelic Upstarts, Cockney Rejects, 4 Skins, P.T.T.B., The Exploited... These are not punk bands? You fools!
Skinhead subculture started in 1968. but Oi (punk) started in 1978. or 1981. (if you consider Sham 69 and other early streetpunk bands Oi! then it's 1978.) On every fućking oi compilation you'll find liner notes explaining that oi is subgenre of punk rock!

I'm really fed up with kids who are punk rock fans for 3 months and "real" experts in punk! Yeah, right! Enough with this "oi is not subgenre of punk" bull$hit!!!

The Lurkers - not an Oi band

Alley McSqueal 11-29-2004 04:47 AM

How long have you been into punk, 3 years?

You dont know it all.

Street punk and oi are two different genres of music.
The Exploited - Street Punk
C'ock Sparrer - Oi
They sound nothing alike.

It is not a sub-genre of punk because it started before punk, just like proto-punk is not a sub-genre of punk. C'ock Sparrer formed in the early 70s, way before The Pistols and Ramones even released their first albums.

The only validity you have is the tie in between the two genres with shared influences and mixing of sounds of both.

Yeah, if oi is a subculture of punk, how did it start first?

Feel The Darkness 11-29-2004 08:58 PM

Oi is not in any way a form of punk, it is merely amped up rock and roll with songs about drinking, fighting, hanging out, the working class, and other such topics...keep it at that

Sick_boy_Samhain 12-01-2004 08:23 AM

I'm 26, I listen to punk since I was 12, but this will turn in "more punk than you" bull$hit, so I don't it's important.

I've done interview with Steve Whale from Business and he speaks about Business as a punk band.

Check out "Burning Britain: UK punk 1980-1984" book. You'll read inside that Tom Hoxton, founder of 4 Skins talks about 4 Skins as a punk band, and much more evidences about oi as a subgenre of punk.
You "Oi's not subgenre of punk" guys are either deaf or dumb. Choose for yourself.

Oi did not start before punk.
How?
Please, explain that "oi came first" nonsense.

the only reason Oi bands occasionally consider themselves as punk is b ecause the skinhead culture is very closely intertwined with the punk scene because alot of punks and skins go to both punk and oi shows.

and as for the whole Oi starting before punk, it generally did, it started in the early 70s (72ish) with CockSParrer and others, which was about 5 years before punk really came to be, and dont give me all that shit about MC5 and The Velevt Underground, cause i dont consider those punk, sure they influenced punk in a way, but it wasnt punk...thus Oi did come around before punk did...

Chug-a-lug 12-01-2004 11:00 AM

Might well be, i think Oi! sucks and most band have got lyrics that could have been written by a 5-year old.
Only Oi band i find interesting is US roughnecks cuz it has a member of the Transplants.

Alo there are alot of fascist Oi bands, such as skrewdriver. Hope you all think they suck.

Lexluthor 12-01-2004 11:04 AM

Have any of you guys heard of a band called 4ft Fingers they did a US tour not two long ago I think... anyway there amazing. You should check them out, there probably among the final few british punk bands not to sell out. Though there new album was sounding a bit to poppy in places... mmm oh well www.4ftfingers.co.uk

Their lyrics are supposed to simple, because they are about simple things, beer, footy, music, having a good time. And they are a s'hitload better than any of Tim Armstrong's bands, in my humbled opinion.

Very few fascists bands make it bigger then their own scenese, Only Skrewdriver because it used to be a non fascist band. And I like them, they have great music, their first album was pure oi, and any nazi albums still have the good music, just stupid lyrics, but are actually pretty funny.

all of their albums have been poppy.

Ok well the bit about selling out was a load of bollocks just blind promotion basically. But I can sure as hell argue against them being poppy, sure there album covers dont really help there cause but by listening to "At your convenience" you can easily see there more than capable off producing a good punk song.

TheRapeGoesOn 12-01-2004 02:36 PM

pop punk song.

Lexluthor 12-01-2004 02:40 PM

"At your convieniance" is an album
