I dont mind the vocals, he actually sings. Im sorta new to Dream Theater and they seem alright so far but ive only heard a few of their songs.

bball_1523 11-14-2004 12:57 AM

I got Images and Words, Awake, and Scenes From A Memory.

At first I thought DT was alright and was just a technical band, but now I kinda like them a bit more since I've been getting their albums recently. I still think they go for technical mastery moreso then composition, but that's my opinion. They have some good songs that I really enjoy, such as Metropolis pt. 1, but for the most part their composition doesn't really do it much for me. Still a great band though.

Scythe404 11-14-2004 01:10 AM
First off, what bass tapping in This Dying Soul?? I don't know of any such tapping

Secondly, I didn't say he was declining, I said some people thought he was :p

Thirdly, I have heard I&W, and I was really not impressed with it aside from a couple of songs. I think it's severely overrated, actually.
 Blasphemy!

Okay, its hard to tell. I only know that it is Bass tapping because of seeing the Live at Budokan DVD. The fluctuating noise that sounds like it could be a weird radio signal in the first 30 seconds or so, which is also followed by almost a humming noise (listen closely) is the bass being tapped with some kind of effects running. It's really quite amazing once you realize what it is.

The JoZ 11-14-2004 01:14 AM

So you specifically saw him do tapping? Because not one tab or the music I have show him doing any tapping anywhere, but rather mirroring Petrucci...

Up The Irons 11-14-2004 01:57 AM

can we cool it with the acronyms?

demon_LLAMA 11-14-2004 02:17 AM

Personally I love the solos on TOT, including ITNOG. But I guess its just all opinion. But there is no doubt Petrucci's chops are head-and-shoulders over all their other previous records by quite a big leap.

Fave track - Stream of Conciousness

I saw him. It was orgasmic. Get Live at Budokan and see for yourself. If you're a DT fan at all its worth it, and you'll get to see how correct i am. :)

Cain 11-14-2004 02:52 AM

I believe Myung is doing tapping in "As I Am," with those absurdly distorted harmonics, not "This Dying Soul." I think he just mixed the songs up.

Myung may be more active, but Rudess doesn't do a **** thing compared to the stuff in Six Degrees. All I hear is his **** keyboard buzzing, his silly wah solos, and his weird symphonic stuff that doesn't really fit. Stream of Consciousness is the exception, but the song seems to be very repetitive, and most importantly, not any different from past Dream Theater work to really justify the ridiculous amounts of accolades it gets. Personally, I want to know why everybody thinks 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence is so subpar. I think the catchiness and harmonic sophistication of the title track is light years away from any of the Phrygian-Dominant crapola on ToT. And Rudess owns on that song, and does way more **** than he does on the entirity of Tot just in the overture to Six Degrees. The orchestra? All keyboards, baby.

And Petrucci's solos on ToT sound like ****ting needles. It's so crappy-sounding that I don't know what came over him. But have faith, the Joz. Go out and get "An Evening with Jordan Rudess and John Petrucci" if you're thinking that Petrucci has lost his stuff. Listen to "Truth," the second track. The playing is brilliant, and is miles better than any DT stuff I've heard recently.

Scythe404 11-14-2004 03:01 AM

Have you seen Live at Budokan? Unless you have, don't argue it with me. He doesn't tap on As I Am, but does do the harmonic intro.

Cain 11-14-2004 03:07 AM

Jeez, chill out. I wasn't calling you names or anything. I thought what he did on As I Am was tap harmonics, working off of my memory of the song's transcription in Guitar World a few months back. That's all. I'll concede that I may be wrong, but not if you pounce on me like that again. Alright?
Sorry for interuptting the advanced DT discussion in here, but I was wondering what you guys thought their best album was? I've been meaning to try and get into them for a while now, but haven't really for one reason or another. They're obviously so incredibly talented that I want to hear more of them. If someone could send me a song or 2 to get me started, that would be great. :thumb:
6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence remains my favorite release, followed by Images and Words.
Some songs:
"The Glass Prison" best DT metal song
"Metropolis Pt. I" legendary
"Blind Faith" awesome awesome
"Learning to Live" probably best composition: not much wankery, but tons of good music.
"6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence" Best conceptual work. Easier on the wankery than the "Scenes from a Memory" album and much more prominent on harmonic sophistication. Really good music in there.

Stormrider33 11-14-2004 03:31 AM

My favorite album is scenes from a memory as i love how they made the entire album tie into each of its songs. It never really seems to end. I think Petrucci reached hs peak on Awake. Train of Thought was my first album by them and although i like As I Am and Endless Sacrifice i was kind of disapointted with the album as a whole. I havent heard Six Degrees of Inner Turbulance(except for the Glass Prison ) and havent heard Images and Words (except Pull Me Under and Under A Glass Moon) which is my favorite song by them, the latter. They are an immensley talented band and , just my opinion Portnoy is the least talented of them. I like the drummer from Symphony X more and to me, Portnoys work gets a bit repetitve over time.

ShadowMan 11-14-2004 03:38 AM

Live at Budokan is phenomenal(sp?). Before I got that I had Awake, Scenes from a Memory, Petrucci and Ruddess, and Liquid Tension #2, but what got me on Budokan was the heaviness of As I Am, Dying Soul, and In the Name of God, **** I love that riff. But being the eternal Tool fan, what if Carrey and Keenan came in to replace DT's respective members?

badtaste 11-14-2004 03:53 AM

Does anyone find it weird when a DT fan is also a fan of Metallica? It's like a paradox (sorta), an intelligent DT fan listening to Metallica...?

And does anyone know if LaB is in Australia yet?

I think their best album is Awake but alot of people would disagree. The best first album to go for would probably be Images And Words.

Theres a couple of tracks for download at http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=378 I'd suggest trying Learning to Live first and Stream of Consciousness.

Message me on AIM some time and I will suit you up with some songs if I am around at the time...
Don't get me wrong i love dream theater!! But they'd be so much better with a different vocalist and better lyrics, their vocalist and lyrics are their downfall. I mean the drumming and guitar work is spectacular to say the least
John Petrucci their guitarist write majority of the lyrics, and I think the lyrics are quite awesome.

I'm a big DT fan but I'm also a fan of early Metallica. But you're right to say it's weird if a DT fan likes their new stuff.

the2stranger 11-14-2004 02:49 PM

really weird, normaly it was like 20 DT threads a day, and now we have an official DT thread, no one posts

Ya, this is what SFK was afraid of.

Arucard 11-14-2004 02:53 PM

can u give me the best DT album to start of on (im not a prog/technical noob so you dont have to start me on a mainstream friendly album.)

BoboTheRagingHobo 11-14-2004 03:03 PM

Scenes From A Memory

That is their best album I do believe, and is their best to start out on as well.
Make sure you listen to it as a whole all the way through since it all interwines.

Glass Prison is by far the song I olike best. I really can;t stand LaBrie's voice. Portnoy is good but I'd rather hear Danny Carey or Thomas Haake. Petrucci is good but I prefer Laiho.

RiceMonster 11-14-2004 05:39 PM

I always found The Glass Prison a bit over-rated, I do enjoy it, but I could never see what the craze over it is.
And am I the only one who loves LaBrie's Voice?

BurningSky 11-14-2004 05:56 PM

I like Labrie's voice, too. I've defintely grown accustomed to it, and can't imagine any other vocalist to replace him...

DT are great. I have all of their albums (including the live ones), Scenes From New York, and I'll be getting Budokan for Christmas...

Most people think Petrucci is going down hill, but I disagree. He is a master at writing solos that fit a particular song. The reason that the solo is so wanky in As I Am, for example, is because the song is about letting loose and not listening to anybody, just doing whatever the hell you want. The solo fits perfect with that mood...

Anyway, ACOS is BY FAR their best song, and I agree with whoever said it before that Awake is their best album. Nothing can beat A Mind Beside Itself (Erotomania, Voices, The Silent Man). The lyrics and isntrumental sections in Voices in particular are eargasmic...

So, yeah. Dream Theater rocks, and I hear they are going into the studio pretty soon for a new album which, according to JR, "It'll be completely fresh and new..."

BludgeonySteve 11-14-2004 06:04 PM

Labrie is a great singer. Atleast he actually sings. I've seen some people say that they don't like Labrie but they worship some guy who just screams.

it's a cray-zay world.
