If you want a taste of expermental ultra brutal death metal..

http://www.wormed.net

I have their album, Planisphaerium, so just IM me at masahista at slsk if you want it.

*checks out Jon's bands*

Hm, I've been hearing of Sonata Arctica awhile back, but never really listened to them.

edit: I've been meaning to check out Desert City for some time(I saw them on an Emo Diaries album), I didn't know they had a purevolume page. Thanks Jon.

BridgeToSolace 11-04-2004 06:10 PM

Sonata Arctica is a power metal band. So, it's all singing, no screaming, and a lot of emphasis on melody.

Still heavy though, and ****loads of talent.

Happymeal 11-04-2004 06:41 PM

You have to listen to Wormed man. Death metal/grind with frog-esque vocals.

Vancouver's Tourist - A supercharged U2

Tom Harrison, Music critic, The Vancouver Province
"...Tourist is like a supercharged U2."

" Dynamic, emotionally sweeping blend of modern rock and edgy alternative. Sounds like a cross between U2, Our Lady Peace, Fuel, Tool/Chevelle, etc. Lineup is experienced, both as songwriters and on the live circuit and are winners in 2004's The Fox Vancouver SEEDS competition (past winners include Nickelback, Default, Matthew Good)..."

artists like the spill canvas

anyone no of any would be helpful

SocoAmarettoLime70x7 11-09-2004 09:44 AM

check out Fly By Night and Red Light Ambition on purevolume. They're lighter than The Spill Canvas, but still acoustic stuff. Also, Commie's band Westbound Departure does a lot of awesome acoustic stuff.

In reality, there are no bands like The Spill Canvas.

BridgeToSolace 11-09-2004 02:39 PM

Time And Distance, The Lyndsay Diaries, A Farewell To Arms, Superstitions Of The Sky.

And did anyone else know that Nick Thomas (The Spill Canvas guy) used to be in Nodes Of Ranvier? ****ing crazy.

And I think TSC is a full band now. Lame.

Pop Punk CD Recommendations

Hello, welcome to Americana. Please press... sorry, stupid song!

Yeah, so the point of this thread is to write small reviews for albums you've recently bought (notice the word "recently"?), to let the other pop-punkers know if it is worthy of being bought.

Don't look at me saying "Kif u retard lolz deres alredi a review forum u silly lolzors!!1". If you want to review an album track by track in detail, then do it THERE. The whole idea of this is to recommend albums which are fairly new and you have got.

If you are going to do a small review, then try to keep the album release recent. It isn't that helpful to see loads of reviews for older albums. The idea is to tell us whether the newer albums are decent enough to buy. Try to stick to these pointers:

ALWAYS put the following details in: Band, Album, Release Date
Give us about a paragraph describing the general sound of the album, and maybe a shorter one tell us about standout tracks if you feel. That doesn't mean the last one is preliminary though, it just means you can do it.
At the end, give it a rating and recommended tracks which you think will give other people a good idea of what the album will sound like
Like stated before, if you want to give an in-depth review of the album, then do it in the CD Reviews Forum. This is for recommendations and small reviews to give us an idea of what the album sounds like ONLY!
Example review:
Band: Jimmy Eat World
Album: Futures
Released: October 11th, 2004

Very typical JEW album. Half the album is filled with catchy hooks and superb lyrics that get stuck in your head for days, while the bigger portion is packed with electric ballads and heart-warming lyrics. Very similar to Clarity, yet slightly heavier. A definite album to add to your collection for 2004 for lovers of post-emo and meaningful pop-punk.
4/5

Recommended tracks:

Pain
Nothingwrong
Night Drive

Something like that. Short and to the point, only slightly describing the album and talking about the general sound. If you have made a proper review for the album then link it at the end.

If this doesn't kick off well, then mods feel free to close it. Also if you think there's no point in this thread, then again close at will. But give it a chance before making quick decisions.

Band: Underoath
Album: They're Only Chasing Safety
Released: June 15, 2004

This album has gotten a lot of heat from hardcore fans and older fans of underoath. they claim that underoath got rid of their old singer and changed their sound for the worse just to cash in on the post-hardcore fad that is going around. that may be true, but what is not true is when they say that ubderoath is doing the same old thing. This album displays how much talent can be used in a post-hardcore band. the vocals in here are amazing, from the gut wrenching screams to the incredible harmonies and overlapping voices. you cant hear vocals this good anywhere else in the post-hardcore scene. the song writting is origional and they like to use a lot of keyboards and they avoid the typical formulas. this has been one of the most played albums i own and it is one of my all time favorites. if you like post-hardcore stuff like Thursday or Finch, check this band out.
4.5/5

songs:
its dangerous business walking out your door
down, set, go,
some will seek forgiveness, others will seek escape
young and aspiring

Band: Green Day
Album: American Idiot
Release Date: 9/21/04(i think)

Well lets just start off and say we've waited for a long time, for a new green day cd. We finally got it. They still have the Green Day sound, but this time they expanded their horizons. The boys have included 2 punk-rock Operas, that are both around 9 minutes, each containing 5 parts, and it tells a story. Those may be the highlight of the album for some, others very well may dislike them. I find it creative. The song "wake me up when september ends" is about the death of Billie Joes dad, and its a sad, but great song. Boulevard of Broken Dreams is another great track, expanding past the typical 2 minutes 30 seconds, this track offers great guitar intros, and a good bass line. Whatsername another catchy song, is a great way to end the album. I'll stop babbaling now, and go away.

Songs:
Jesus of Suburbia
Boulevard of Broken Dreams
We are the waiting
Whatsername
Homecoming
Holiday

Band: Straylight Run
Album: Self Titled
Released: October 12, 2004

Coming fresh from TBS, detached members Shaun Cooper, John Nolan and his pseudo-backup vocalist sister Michelle formed Straylight Run in the middle of 2003. It's not surprising how much raves they have received in the past year alone and with their massively promoted EP spreading rapidly, this album is one of the most anticipated for pop-punk fans everywhere. First thoughts about this; their sound does not stray too far from their EP, it's just honest, no-nonsense post-emo.

Some might dismiss them for being another Dashboard, and thought they don't break new ground, this cd still deserves a good listen. What sets them apart from other bands of the same genre is Michelle. Not only does adds some sorrowful textures with her piano playing, but her beautiful childlike vocals will delve you deeper in the songs.

Do not, however, expect this as another Something to Write About. It does deliver, but sometimes it lacks the replay value as some songs end up sounding the same over time.

One of the strengths of this album is the lyrics. Yes, most of it is straight up mush, but it gets all the more meaningful if you can relate to it like most post-emo lines are. Overall, despite the exclusion of A Slow Descent(which for me is a wonderful song), it's still a pretty good purchase for everyone into the genre.

3.7/5

Songs:

The Perfect Ending
Existentialism on Prom Night
Your Name Here(Sunrise Highway)
Sympathy for the Martyr
