The Ashtray Girl 07-30-2004 05:42 AM

I'll take the Mars Volta one, being one of the few people here yet to hear their stuff.

The Ashtray Girl 07-30-2004 05:58 AM

Starts off with quite a weird, distorted noise in the background and some guitar. The singer has a weird voice, but I like it. Can't make out the lyrics all of the time, but they don't seem to make much sense. I like all the instrumental parts I can hear properly, they seem quite complex which is always good.

Ooh, now it's a much heavier bit, drummer is having a lot of fun here. The vocals are surprisingly high, but not in a irritating way. Now it's all stopped apart from some really bizarre noises. Kinda springy.

Ooh, now we have the guitar solo, which doesn't seem to be very hard so far. Could change though. Back to another verse, the vocals are quite a lot clearer now, which is good. Something about a basement, think I've heard that before. Ooh, two voices harmonising now, hurray!

Now more energetic bit again, I'm guessing this is a chorus. ~starts dancing around~ I'm really enjoying this. I see I still have a while to go, I'm intruiged what they're going to do next.

Now it's a bridge or something, which sounds very earnest and emotional. Now some kinda echo effect going on. Now the vocals are kinda distorted and weird. Just guitar with strange background noise again, and now they're building it up to another chorusy thing. Have no clue what the singer's on about, but that doesn't matter.

Ok, ok, let's have something different or just finish the song, they seem to be dragging it out a little.

And lo and behold, there's a kind of alarm sound and other strange things and it appear to be finishing off. Yes, it has.

7/10 - score could go up with repeated listening though

My songs:

Eve 6 - Here's To The Nights (really nice little love song)
Ani DiFranco - Gravel (great lyrics, very heartfelt)
Bjork and Thom Yorke - I've Seen It All (thought-provoking and quite emotional)
Elbow - Switching Off (very mellow)

pixiesfanyo 07-30-2004 05:58 AM

Well Its from a bootleg so your going to have to im me and I suggest you don't do it if you haven't heard the band before since it is 13 minutes long.

lilsolsman 07-30-2004 07:06 AM

i'm gonna do the Ani DiFranco one cause my sister is totally into all her stuff.. maybe i'll like it too

Ani DiFranco - Gravel
Starts with a cool fast lil accoustic intro.. This goes on for the entire verse and slightly changes in the chorus... the vocals are very appropriate for the song and makes the whole thing complete.. i have to say that it's gets a lil boring cause the guitar barely changes in the song but i must say it's not SO boring that i turn it off.. it's very catchy but i have the feeling that if i listen to this 3 times or more i might get bored with it... But for now.. i like :) 8/10

My songs will be:
Air - Alpha Beta Gaga (Wanna bet that you'll be whisteling for days) 'Instrumental'
Travis - Re-Offender (Really sad song.. cool though) 'not sure what genre'
Belle & Sebastian - Step Into My Office, Baby (Fast, happy, feelgood song) 'indie i think'
Caesars Palace - Jerk It Out (REALLY energetic) 'probably indie'
The Thrills - Don't Steal Our Sun (Beach Boys Surfer Music Style) 'not sure what genre'

bruise_pristine 07-30-2004 10:20 AM

Jerk It Out, by Caesars Palace

Jerk It Out is a song that makes me wanna dance, it has that sorta feel to it. The opening keyboard effect was unexpected, but once I turned down my speakers it was a nice beat, drums follow in quickly after they keyboard with vocals. Im digging the verse it's quite catchy and the guys voice fits the song rather well, but im kinda getting bored with chorus as the chorus doesn't differ from the verse to much. The song keeps the same pattern until 1:37, when the song goes to sorta a drum outro the song kicks back at about 2:05 during this time, I kinda go lost in the song and my attention went else where, it was a cliche drum beat w/ a few dj effects. At 2:05 the song kicks back to the chorus and contiunes the same process as before, until the song starts to fade out with some voices speaking over the music.

6.5/10

My Picks:

Savory, by Jawbox
Knoxville Girl, by Nick Cave

Savory - Jawbox

Interesting intro. Some heavy guitar and some bass and drums. Not very catchy but it works. The lyrics come in. He sounds like a cheaper version of Eddie Vedder. Lyrics aren't that good but they fit the grungy type of song that it is. Going through the verse kind of boring. The chorus is way more interesting than the rest of the song. It's really catchy in my opinion and has some great guitar work behind it. Overall this is a decent alternative song but nothing amazing.

Nooo...
Get the defribulator!!

Happymeal 07-31-2004 08:57 AM

Denali-Gunner

I heard this song on the Jade Tree comp., which stands out from the rest. This is the first one I've heard from them(just a month ago), and suddenly i got infatuated with their sound. Intro sounds like your typical alt/pop(guitar and vocals enter, followed by the bass and drums), but as the song progresses, it sounds very dream poppy and sensual*rarr*, along with the lyrics("I'll get you before you get me" i think). They kinda remind me of The Cardigans..hehehe. This one could've been longer and had some more parts...but a great, great song, especially if you're new to them like me. Although i went to their site and found out they already disbanded..darn.

9/10

My picks:

Kind of Like Spitting-Birds of a Feather(if you're already tired of Dashboard Confessional, this is a good alternative. Love the violin)

Two Ton Shoe-Medicine(I don't know why nobody knows TTS!! If you like listening to the old Incubus and 311's funky songs, i seriously recommend this band to you)

Pelican-Drought(Progressive metal. My friend told me to listen to this, but i haven't downloaded it yet. You listen to it, and tell me what you think)

Mae-This Time Is The Last Time(Jars of Clay-ish "modern" emo, if you're sick of everything else..)

CarnageFairy 07-31-2004 09:29 AM

dibs on the Two Ton Shoe song, because Two Ton Shoe is a friggen awesome name.

CarnageFairy 07-31-2004 09:48 AM

**** typos, I was searching SoulSeek, Kazaa, and Limewire for Two Ton Shoe, when it was actually Two Tone Shoe.

Ok, anyway, on to the review...

When I first started the song, I realized that this is a straight up funk song. Starts out with a classic funk bassline and some distorted guitar. The person singing has a pretty good voice, and it really suits the song. There's backup vocals going ooooooh ahhhhhh which are really cool. Gets old kinda quick, though.

Overall, a decent fun song, just not what I like.

I give it a 6/10.

Dibs on Trophy Scars, I've been meaning to check them out.

Trophy Scares - Sleep Little Nemo -- The Kidnapping.

I liked this song, mainly because I'm into a lot of these type of bands. It probably won't be a favourite for everyone out there. I liked the intro, starts out slow with the twinkly guitars, then hits you hard with the distortion and vocals.

4/5

This band really reminds me of Taken, if you like Trophy Scars you should definately get some songs from them. I'll make them one of my song suggestions.

All Scars - (tk.1) Early Set (Is that the name?)

Cool intro with the feedback. Classic little stick click. Nice catchy part on the off beat. Simple but catchy. Reminds me of a video game. The vocals could be mixed in better. I like the heavier part. Lots of feedback. Cool bass line. I really like how loud the bass is. It adds to the song. I'm coming around on the vocals. They're mixed well for the song. Back to the offbeat thing. It feels kind of empty. The song is pretty repetitive. I've only heard two parts excluding the intro. The feedback heavy and the offbeat thing with it's little video game part. The drums are really dull. Aside from the bass that song basically sucked. It had cool bits (offbeats) but mostly I just wanted to hear something else happen.

5/10

Soli i Sombra - The Butcher (www.soliisombra.com)
Loudermilk - Juillet or Mai
Muse - Hysteria

The Ashtray Girl 07-31-2004 03:47 PM

I'll do the Butcher song.

The Ashtray Girl 07-31-2004 04:03 PM

Soli i Sombra - The Butcher

I'm intruiged already, very new age-y and echo-y, with slightly etheral singing. Seems to be a really good chillout song. Vocals getting stronger now, goes into the song proper. You could get into quite a nice groove listening to this. Now there's words, which seem a little scary, he's singing about killing and stuff.

Has now gone into a louder section, many voices which I like. Wow she's going high. Sounds a little bit like Amy Lee in a weird way.

Now just the instruments, some strings coming in. More echoes. I'm really liking this. Once again, one of those songs that could use repeated listening - always a good thing. Had enough of this song now though, should definitely end about here. Ooh, it's changed, there's a bit of solo, can't really tell what instrument it is, probably some sort of classical guitar. Ok, all very nice, let's stop now. There's some strange fuzzy sounds and a buzzing thing, weird... kinda like bees. Now some whistling, generally an outdoors kinda sound.

And it's stopped

That was nice, but it did seem to go on a bit, so I'm going to give it a ~drum roll~ 6.5/10

My picks:

The Libertines - Can't Stand Me Now (good, slightly edgy indie pop, probably familiar to British MXicans, but worth a listen for anyone else)
india.arie - Video (fiesty, singer/songwritery kinda thing)
Gavin Rossdale - Adrenaline (bit rockier, may not strictly fall into the alt/indie category, but I'm sure we can live with that)

Happymeal 07-31-2004 08:09 PM

Wups! My bad, pixies.. i didn't read the first post so i just posted mine on random. hehehe. Anyways, sorry i don't have time to DL right now, though Eriatarka is my favorite song on De-Loused, is that a live version??

By the way CarnageFairy, their name really is Two Ton Shoe, they have a website. Honestly i've only heard 3 songs from them(the other two are Believe and Paper Bag, in case you're still interested)..but i like 'em a lot even if they're a bit formulaic for most people's taste..i like my songs a bit poppy, hahaha

Hmm, then it must have been a typo a la Limewire.

The Libertines - Can't Stand Me Now

OK, so I've heard of the Libertines, but haven't actually heard any songs. Not sure what to expect.

Well, it's pretty repetetive. Just basically the same thing all the way through with a few variations. I don't really like the vocals, they're a bit boring. He's kind of quiet, and I think he's trying to sound edgey or paranoid or something, but I don't think it works.

Um, overall, the song is alright, but a bit underwhelming. Maybe it'd grow on me, but right now I give it:

5/10

OK here's my suggestions:

Belle & Sebastian - Lazy Line Painter Jane
My Morning Jacket - One Big Holiday
Television - Marquee Moon
The Replacements - Alex Chilton

lilsolsman 08-01-2004 08:44 AM

I'm gonna do the Belle and Sebastian one

lilsolsman 08-01-2004 09:03 AM

Belle & Sebastian - Lazy Line Painter Jane

The intro is ok, nothing really special.. The vocals are kinda cool but do get boring kinda quick.. The chorus is.. not so very special either.. Then a woman starts singing and that does make it way cooler.. (the guy was booooring) But still i don't think it makes this song very special.. My bro who is sitting next to me (a more frequent belle and sebastian listener) does like this song so i think if u like the rest of their stuff you'll like this too
me: 4/10 More Frequent Belle & Sebastian Listener: 7/10

Hot Hot Heat - Oh, Godamnit (Just a very cool song)
The Shins - So Says I (Song with a bit of a 60's feel to it)
The Sheer - It Only Gets Better (Cool Dutch Band, pretty energetic)
Travis - Humpty Dumpty Love Song (Cool Lyrics, strumming chords)

Dancin' Man 08-01-2004 09:32 AM

Undib.

Robert Crumb 08-01-2004 12:05 PM

I'd like to give the Shins song a try if no one else gots it...
