I think Franz Ferdinand is a really bad and weird name.

LordDargon 03-11-2004 09:10 AM

Liquid Tension Experiment. Dillinger Escape Plan. pretty random.

superpeer 03-11-2004 10:24 AM

Anal torture

Little Emperor 03-11-2004 12:06 PM

Meshuggah means 'crazy' in Hebrew I think.

What about Les Claypool's band The Fearless Flying Frog Brigade?

TomHimself 03-11-2004 12:42 PM

A... A... ANAL CUNT! And their song titles rule too! Shame the songs don't though ;)
Blink 182 and Sum 41... what the hell is the meaning behind those names?
41 days til graduation they invented the name.. 182 are the months the 3 members were born in

Pretty cheesy and gay tbh

Vitriolic Rage 03-11-2004 12:50 PM

Orange Goblin
Akercocke (I don't know what it means, or how to pronounce it!)

Vitriolic Rage 03-11-2004 12:53 PM

Actually, it was because the band was formed 41 days into the summer. ;)

Actually it's Yiddish, I believe. Although I could be wrong.

I'd have to agree with Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. Maybe not the weirdest, but definitely very random. And a cool band, too.

ludz 03-11-2004 01:15 PM

Butthole Surfers
Rainbow Butt Monkeys

maybe they had a fascination for the man!
He did cause the first and second world war :thumb:

sacrifice93.2 03-11-2004 01:59 PM

^^^WWII was a side effect of World War I, so, I guess he did start it, indirectly. Anyway, Mudvayne would go in this category, as would Spineshank.

NJMetalMeister 03-11-2004 02:15 PM

Definately Borknagar, because the band them selves said the name has absolutely no meaning.

Little Emperor 03-11-2004 02:24 PM
Actually it's Yiddish, I believe. Although I could be wrong.
Aye, that's the one, I knew it was something crazy like that (no pun intended).

What about Dog Fashion Disco as another one as well, that's pretty weird.

btoto 03-11-2004 02:43 PM

i heard of 2 local punk bands called:

1. grandma's fart
2. smells like teen vagina

and a heavy metal band called:

metal ejaculation

TomHimself 03-11-2004 02:45 PM

There's also a band called:

!!!

How the **** do you say that?

Girl-Playing-Bass 03-11-2004 02:54 PM
Blink 182 and Sum 41... what the hell is the meaning behind those names?
Sum 41 was formed 41 days into a summer. :p

MetalMan882 03-11-2004 04:44 PM

I was going to say Dog Fashion Disco

Merzbow is pretty weird, in both musical content and moniker.

5 character rule >_<

Zakka 03-11-2004 04:55 PM

About the Blink 182, a curious thing: on E igh T wo . You know, the first and last letters are the same.

Bleh, the band sucks anyway =P

Reel Big Fish is strange and I dont get the "X" in Symphony X. The Mars Volta and their musics all have strange names.

Berner 03-11-2004 04:57 PM
Pink Floyd = Not sure.
I was pretty sure that it is the names of some famous American blues players combined.

koRnymetallica 03-20-2004 03:35 PM

Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster. Surprised that hasn't come up yet.
White Stripes. Why????
Mushroomhead.
downthesun.
Puddle Of Mudd. Crap name, crap band.
Rammstein. Translates as 'ramming stone' apparently. Weird.

Kert Rift 03-20-2004 03:41 PM

Chinaski -> China ski

Mattacular 03-20-2004 03:48 PM

Pink Floyd is named after two blues musicians: Pink Anderson and Floyd Council.

Led Zeppelin changed from the New Yardbirds when Keith Moon said that their act would go over like a "lead zeppelin" (meaning it wouldn't fly)

PURESlipKnoTFaN 03-20-2004 04:05 PM

yeah well no one said this band... Squirrel Nut Zippers

pearljamaddict 03-20-2004 04:27 PM

I heard a local band called "Piggy got Pubes". I think its a really **** name, but theres just no talking to the guy who came up with it....I cant think of any bands right now that everyone has heard of with weird names. The Foo fighters is a pretty weird name, but that has something to do with the second world war, I think the Foo Fighters(the origionals, not the band) were guys sent to find alians during WWII? I dunno, cant remember

Scott Herren 03-20-2004 04:37 PM

...and you will know us by the trail of dead
Echo & the Bunnymen
Fantastic Plastic Machine
Neutral Milk Hotel
Super Furry Animals
The Flaming Lips
