*bump*

epifreak2002 03-05-2004 09:00 AM

To be fair, this is the first Floyd album I bought, so I'm probably a little biased. The only complaint that I have is the "all flow together" thing. Normally this is a good thing, but I live like 5 minutes from school, so it's not even worth bothering to listen on the way there, where I listen to most of my music. That said, it's the perfect album to fall asleep to (not because it's boring; it isn't, but because it's peaceful, and that flow thing works well.) I'd have to say 4.5/5.

i tend to get lost about halfway through. i can't really listen to this without nodding off.

When i 1st bought Dark Side, i bought it solely on it reputation. Just about eveybody knows it as one of the greatest albums in history. At that time i had only heard Pink Floyd on the radio, namely, Learning To Fly, Another Brick In The part 2, Money.

When i finally listened to it, i was a bit disappointed. I was expecting to be wowed straightg away, and i wasnt. i played it a few more times but couldnt get into. I didnt like how it flowed from one song into another and i didnt like all the effects i wasnt used to hearing.

Several years later my tastes matured and now i realize what an amazing body of work this actually it. Its constant flow is its charm. It not supposed to have great singles and is best enjoyd in one long sitting. The effects are enchanting and dreamy, and it paved the way for the concept album. Dave Gilmore's guitar playing is disarmly simple and used to great effect.

It deservedly earns its right to be classed as one of the greatest albums of all time along with Pet Sounds and Sgt Pepper.

Dark Side is on par with Wish You Were Here as their best work. Animals is very good, but it doesnt quite compare. If anything i favour Wish You Were Here a bit more, but thats not being reviewed. I have several versions of both albums including the audiophile cd's (Mastesound & MFSL) and they are well worth the extra money if you have quality equiptment. The music comes alive with depth and clarity i did not expect.

On a final note, the Dark Side/Wizard of Oz is utter crap. It must be concocted by someone with too much time on their hands. The supposed links to lyrics and what you see on screen and the mood of the music are hardly convincing enough to make me beleive it was a structured project. Its someone thinking too hard and clutching at straws. I feel silly for wasting my time with it.

I think the Darkside ad WOO thing is pretty cool. Under no circumstances do I think that Roger Waters set out for Darkside to match the movie but I do enjoy the cool and nifty coincidences that if offers.

that and the "i am disappointed" quote makes you the most pompous person i have ever met in cyberspace. well done, sir.

This is a great sleep record, I mean that in a good way.

Us and Them is the perfect sleep song

AfroMan 07-13-2004 03:05 PM

I don't like how you've reviewed this album song by song.

In my opinion this isn't really a song by song album but more of a progression. One of my favourite albums of all time 5/5.

Kingofdudes 11-13-2004 11:03 PM

I have to listen to this album at least one a day, I love every song on this album.

But 2 tracks really stand out for me, Us & Them and Time. Us & Them is perfect in every way to me, from the piano work to the vocals and lyrics, I love everything about it.

David's guitar solo on Time is amazing, it is one of the many reason why he is my favorite guitarist :)

This album is a 4/5

Big-Bird 11-14-2004 12:51 AM

I heard about Pink Floyd in a commerical for their Echoes: Best of album. You know how the commercials do little clips of the songs and when I heard Time I instantly fell in love with it.

I think the album has a formula no one else can compare, the right amount of lyrics and music.

zed4321.pumpkin_pie 11-14-2004 03:24 AM

One of THE best albums of all time. The whole album is just like one big song. It is so intense & artistic. "Great Gig in the Sky" is the standout for me.....also US & THEM and BREATHE. It's a masterpiece (In my Opinion).

I love listening to "On the run" when I am stoned. This is an awesome album. It rocks

Kage 12-04-2004 01:40 AM

Amazing album, I love how it just creates this huge atmosphere, building and releasing tension at all the right places. It flows together as an album so well that it's like one big song with nine movements. My favorite is Brain Damage and Us & Them

*dons fire-retardant suit*
I KNOW that I will be hopelessly flamed for this, charred for life. I figure someone might as well say it though. I personally believe this to be the most overrated album of all time. It is great because it is a single-flow art album, and was innovative. I love lots of albums like it. However, what makes a great album for me is the music. I don't care how brilliant the concept is, unless it has some catchy hooks, beautiful singing, or passionate expressions of some emotion (not necessarily requiring great volume or anything), I don't really enjoy listening to it.

The fact is, I don't really like any of the songs on DSOTM. I know someone is going to come along and say "that's not the point!!! Listen to it as a whole album." Well, the album is how I listen to music. I listen to 95% of the albums I own, if not more end-to-end without skipping a track. In my mind, the album is the central standard for evaluating music. Perhaps this is partially a result of DSOTM. I don't care for it much as an album either though. Perhaps I am simply missing the point. I own it. If anyone cares to explain the point, I'm willing to give it a spin and careful listen tomorrow.

None of the songs stand out to me as being particularly beautiful and profound on DSOTM. Am I beng too prententious? Of course. I did, after all, start playing guitar because I love Nirvana. However, for a pretentious band (don't get me started on Roger Waters), this is a rather uninspiring album. I personally don't see what distinguishes this album from other music as special art. The Wall is art to me, but this isn't. I always avoided Pink Floyd because of the stereotype that braindead potheads listened to their music. This album actually reinforces that idea in my mind. It seems as though I'd have to be high to appreciate it, because I see no reason to when sober.

That is why I am one of perhaps 5 people on the entire boards who don't like Dark Side of the Moon.

If you don't like it you don't like it. No big deal.

pixiesfanyo 12-04-2004 07:33 AM

Wish You Were Here, is far more emotional looozer. You should check that out.

freakmeeko 12-04-2004 08:04 AM

I have the vinyl, but I really should get the cd version. Is it digitally remastered? Oh and the "If you hear this whisper you're dying" thing IS real.
Oh and the "If you hear this whisper you're dying" thing IS real.
Yeah, and it's quite freaky too.... and yes they do have multiple remastered versions out now.

Favorite songs on this masterpeice of a disk are: Breath, which I think is totally underrated and overlooked on the count of how short it is. Then there's the classics like Time, TGGITS, Money, and then there's Us & Them which is my absolute favorite on the disk, because it's so dang emotional and creative, and also I like Brain Damage and Any Colour You Like (One of the best instrumentals ever.). This CD is almost perfect, who cares if its the most popular, it's still Pink Floyd music on a very very high level.

Manimal 12-04-2004 03:16 PM

Where on the album is the "if you hear this whisper you are dieing" part?

I've heard it before, and likely would have bought it if it weren't $18.99. "Wish You Were Here" and "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" are three of the best tracks ever. Yes, I said three, because the latter has two parts, both of which rule... anyway, yeah, you're right :thumb:

Amazon.com + used CD = alotta money saved :thumb:

You have to listen to DSOTM without any prejudice. Just open up and let yourself go, and then you wil see what everyone is raving about. Don't steriotype, don't look for reasons not to like it, just LISTEN. There's a reason that this album was on the Billboard charts for over 10 years.

In The Great Gig In The Sky at about the 3:34 in the song, it's only creepy if you dont expect it coming cause it just jumps out at you.

Lordy.
I brought my dad this album on CD for Xmas (He has the vinyl, but you can't play that in the car now can you?) and I just listened to it today.
My god! I'd heard snippets before but as a whole, this album is incredible. The whole range of emotions is in there and it inspired me, especially that insane vocal on great gig in the sky! My word! And the solo on track 3!!!
Brilliant, brilliant album!

Track 3 would be "Time" one of there better known songs.

Regardless of what anyone says, DSOTM is 1 of the greatest albums of all time, it's a scientific fact haha. Not the best Floyd album, but it further exceeds 99% of every other cd out there.

OK. You call it the best album ever then you go on to say that it's not the best Floyd album.

Make up your mind.
