Whats wrong with the new musical direction post ozzy? Id prefer a band willing to change rather than go stale.

666Ozzfan 05-04-2006 03:42 AM

I agree, but I think more people grew up listening to Sabbath with Ozzy, and so thats what they know as Sabbath. When you suddenly start listening to the same band, with a different singer, it can really throw people. Especially if this changes the general sound of the band. Thats what happened with me, I only knew Ozzy-era, and when I listened to post-Ozzy, I didn't really like it. Took a little while to get used to a new sound, and try to take the Ozzy sound out of my head.

The Masked Guitarist 05-04-2006 09:39 AM

sorry but sabbath is nothing without ozzy not that i dont like DIO but still sabbath is only ozzy!

shadow_stalker 05-04-2006 10:57 AM

your wrong, no two ways about it sabbath is not only ozzy, and if you read through some of the thread Brew has listed hundreds of reasons why

some links people might find interesting

there is a link from a demo tape sabbath did with a guy called dave donato, who joined sabbath for 6 months just after Gillan left (i think)

think im ognna get that book, should be good for a read through

Rattlehead 05-04-2006 02:23 PM

coughOPINIONcough.

anyway, the whole sound was changed without ozzy, and thats why he and i think sabbath is ozzy, and is only good with him. i think. sure enough, ozzy's sabbath didnt just include ozzy, iommi was great, but nevertheless it all changed without him.

shadow_stalker 05-04-2006 02:31 PM

But he is saying sabbath was nothing without ozzy as a fact rather than what he thought

You're right. He was hired after sending in an impressive audio tape to fulfill tour commitments....but he wasn't comfortable in the studio and left. That was from April '84 till late'84 before Ozzy came back to sing with them for Live Aid in July '85 and Glenn Hughes joined in June '85

I think Sabbath with Ozzy is better than post-Ozzy, but the rest is still good quality Sabbath music and I still enjoy listening to it as much as with Ozzy.

So The Masked Guitarist, I'm assuming you won't have any of Ozzy's solo albums? Because if you listen closely, it doesn't sound anything like Sabbath... Just something to think about........

rippa32 05-05-2006 03:11 AM

^ oh god thank you. Its an argument I always forget to pull out, because Ozzy only ever sounds like whatever his guitarist likes. Unlike Dio who put his spin on every band hes been with. Ozzy is a ****house writer plain and simple.

oh btw 666Ozzfan are you the one that came on earlier asking what post-ozzy albums to get? Cos if you are what ones did you end up buying?

I've not bought any yet, haven't had the time.

rippa32 05-06-2006 06:03 AM

Ah ok. I was thinking of getting Live Evil after hearing a Sabbath cover Dio did when he was in elf, great stuff.

'tis not very fair to praise sabbath for changing their sound when they got a new singer, and then criticise ozzy for changing sound when he got a different guitarist

victim of changes 05-06-2006 10:04 PM

I don't view sabbath the same without ozzy, obviously most don't, ozzy is just a great frontman, and his era was obviously the best, not to trash sabbath's latert stuff, i love dio and heaven and hell is a great album, i can't really comment on any of the other later stuff though.
'tis not very fair to praise sabbath for changing their sound when they got a new singer, and then criticise ozzy for changing sound when he got a different guitarist
That's not the point I was trying to get across, I simply meant Ozzy never adds anything to the music, hes just the frontman because a band needs one even in his solo career. I never criticised the change in music direction.

Riva 05-07-2006 06:11 AM

Well, to be honest, Ozzy's solo career was fairly mediocore, at least compared to his work in Black Sabbath.

666Ozzfan 05-07-2006 10:53 PM

Regarding Ozzy's solo work, I really like it. It's different to most anything else that I've heard. He wasn't so egotistical to try to make his new band sound like Sabbath.

Fair enough really for Sabbath changing the sound of the music when they got rid of Ozzy. I don't think people would have appreciated a new singer nearly as easily if it had been the original sound with a new singer. I know my attitude would be "it's just someone trying to sound like Ozzy", and I wouldn't be as inclined to buy the albums. Really, it was Sabbath being new, different, and showing another side to each member.

It wasn't that the band was rejecting their sound they had with Ozzy, as it showed whenever Ozzy came back for reunion shows. They still played Ozzy-era songs with the Ozzy-era sound.

Hope this kinda makes sense....

rippa32 05-08-2006 05:00 AM

Ive seen Ozzy say quite a few times he didnt really like the music Sabbath made. But now hes back with them he just bags the post-ozzy stuff. If he didn't like it, why did he come back? Sometimes hes almost as bad as Sharon.

shadow_stalker 05-08-2006 11:44 AM

I love Ozzy's solo stuff, it was a nice change of direction from black sabbath rather than just makeing a black sabbath clone

No one will ever be as bad as Sharon, i will never forgive her for what she did to Iron Maiden

Rattlehead 05-08-2006 11:59 AM

what did she do?

rippa32 05-09-2006 04:55 AM

Long story, just search Iron Maiden OZZFest in google and you should get a fair few articles. Kelly and some other unsigned bands were involved as well.

victim of changes 05-09-2006 03:14 PM

yea, that was a horrible day.

rippa32 05-10-2006 05:46 AM

Apparently Steve Harris apoligized to Ozzy about Bruce, but I think bruce was right to complain.

ultim8bassist 05-10-2006 11:33 AM

Peechka Beats 05-12-2006 02:11 PM

Love the Sabbath.

Sabbath was actually the music which slapped me up side the head and made me relize rap was awful during my highschool days. Changing my ways and making me a rocker, instead of a wigger.

Here is the songs our band plays all the time....
NIB
War Pigs
Paranoid
Hand of Doom
Iron Man
Electric Funeral
Symptom of the Universe
Snowblind

All of us pretty much know these tunes by heart, now.

rippa32 05-13-2006 01:33 AM

Awesome, always good to see people converted to rock.

shadow_stalker 05-13-2006 04:30 AM

im supposed to learn 'into the void' and 'sympton of the universe' on the drums for my band to play, not sure if i will be able to do the fills on sympton of the universe aswell as Bill does them...i could always make them up though

Riva 05-13-2006 04:32 AM

Into The Void is such a bloody great song. Perhaps my favourite.

Why not? Bill made it up too. I suppose the best way to do it would be to do the same general thing hes doing but in your own way, if that makes sense. It probably doesn't because Im not a drummer.
