Pluperfect_Arson 08-27-2009 01:48 AM

I am going on a bike ride to Astoria this weekend, 106-mile trip one-way.

See you all on Saturday!

funkyhoney 08-27-2009 03:20 AM

I hurt my wrist at work and by complaining enough managed to bypass 6 months of paperwork to get a rollerdoor replaced. Win.

gaslight 08-27-2009 03:28 AM

Used your feminine wiles ey? Well done sir.

funkyhoney 08-27-2009 05:23 AM

Used my extensive "fix it or you will pay for my extensive physiotherapy bills" wiles.

I_WEAR_RED_PANTS 08-27-2009 07:43 AM

I'm going to apply to a library today.

FunkMetalBass 08-27-2009 09:58 AM

forty-six and two

FunkMetalBass 08-27-2009 09:59 AM

Sweet. I thought about volunteering at my local library.
I'm going to apply to a library today.
twenty five or six to four

BenJammin 08-27-2009 10:00 AM

Volunteering is lame. I'm talking about a job.

FunkMetalBass 08-27-2009 10:09 AM
Volunteering is lame. I'm talking about a job.
Yes, but I have a job that certainly pays more than the library. I was talking about volunteering from the kindness of my heart.

That makes me sound like a better person than you. Your name is Ben LESSER. Do you see where I'm going with this?

Raayl > Me > You.

What prompted looking into a library for a job? And are you doing anything with your degree?

BenJammin 08-27-2009 10:14 AM

Library because it's the campus one, and I can't do anything with my degree, anyway. This is just a filler year between graduating and going to grad school.

I just need a job that pays rent and won't make me kill myself.

You can't do anything with your degree? I'd bitch to your school that they sold you a worthless degree and you want your money back.

gaslight 08-27-2009 10:31 AM

There's no such thing as a degree you can't do anything with - at worst, you can always teach your degree to the next batch of suckers.

Says two people who clearly don't hold university bachelor degrees.

I am not an exception. Modern society, at least in North America (or at the very least, my part of the country) is at the point where a BA is roughly equivalent to a high school diploma--and a high school diploma stopped mattering a number of years ago.

While it is not to say that I am unable to find employment opportunities with my degree, it is immensely difficult. I do not begrudge my university anything, because it is not their fault that work is difficult to come by. This is why I am going to return to school next fall. I would have done so this fall, but after having spent so many years of my life in school, I felt it was appropriate and mentally necessary to take a break.

In many ways, working at a library is highly relevant to my particular degree (English) because it allows me to work in an environment with a great number of academics and I can benefit from their experiences as I consider graduate schools. Furthermore, it will allow me to become more properly familiar with the library system which in turn will make me more adept at researching material for future work.

Insofar as the comment about teaching is concerned--you cannot teach with a BA. At the least, it is required to possess a BEd (Bachelor of Education) in order to quality for joining the Teachers Association, and even then, it is often necessarily to possess a second degree in a subject that qualities as a 'teachable' (such as science, math, English, history, etc.).

gaslight 08-27-2009 10:42 AM

You're talking to a guy who's on the verge of finishing a BMus so please, a little respect when it comes to uselessness of degrees.

Though, that's harsh about the Bachelor Of Education requirement. If I want to teach music at a tertiary insitute over here, my BMus will be enough. If I wanted to teach classes of students at a high school I would need an education degree of some kind, but not to do private tuition at one.

I don't think people should stress if their degree isn't hugely employable. There's only one thing a man needs to work and that's good old fashioned elbow grease, and they can pursue their interests on their own time.

I was making a joke. I realize that a diploma and BA are viewed about the same, which is why I plan on working this dead-end job until I get accepted into the master's program, and then using loans to quit my job and become a full-time student. I'm hoping to step it up and pound through my studies and have my BS in Math at the end of next Spring. If I get accepted into the Math master's program, I'll be using the summer school sessions to work on my BA in Quantum Physics.

It was always recommended to me that, if you want to teach (in the U.S. at least), you should get a degree in your subject and then go for the teaching degree. At the elementary/middle school level, you aren't required to have a BAE if you have a teaching major and a degree in your field (although they'll usually require you to stay in school to work for the BAE).

What's your degree in, again? Creative Writing?

BenJammin 08-27-2009 12:11 PM

Library wouldn't even let me apply because I'm not a student. Bunch of fucks. Why hire someone who is available at any time when you can hire a first or second year who can only work 10 hours a week.

My degree is in English Language and Literature.

FunkMetalBass 08-27-2009 12:15 PM

Unfortunately, that's how schools work - they usually like to keep everything student-run because they probably get some sort of tax break and can afford to pay students minimum wage.

Jimbobntnr 08-27-2009 12:19 PM

I worked my *** off to get into a field that was somewhat lenient on degrees, looking moreso for experience. gathering the experience, however wasn't easy.
I wasn't really afforded an opportunity to go to college though, I tried to work my way through but couldn't really stay sober long enough to do so.

BenJammin 08-27-2009 12:19 PM

It's not even a min. wage job, either. Blargh.

I don't want to resort to working in some crappy food place.

Jimbobntnr 08-27-2009 12:21 PM

take your 5 minutes and then get back in the game ben.

BenJammin 08-27-2009 12:25 PM

For sure. I'll start searching again tomorrow.

Jimbobntnr 08-27-2009 12:28 PM

I was scared shitless when I got my first place. I don't know what your circumstances are but I was asked to leave my home at 17, I had a suitcase and about 3500 bucks. are you working anywhere currently?

oops, and a car.

FunkMetalBass 08-27-2009 12:30 PM

Have you thought about trying to work for the local paper or something? What about the city library? Surely an English & Lit degree will look good for either of those places.
