hey ppl...

ive only pretty new to dream theater...

could some people recommend me some songs, preferrably more to the glass prison and the root of all evil style? (ie, maybe a bit heavier?)

ive got around an album's worth of random DT and wanted to get into a bit more of their stuff.

cheers:)
Try:
This Dying Soul (Part 2 of the alcohol recovery steps. The order is The Glass Prison, This Dying Soul and then the Root of all Evil)
Lie
The Mirror
Voices
Endless Sacrifice
Pull Me Under
Metropolis Part 1
Caught in a Web
Honor Thy Father
As I Am
In the Name of God
Panic Attack
Never Enough
Fatal Tragedy
A Change of Seasons
Under a Glass Moon
Scarred
Stream of Consciousness
The Great Debate
These Walls

That should be enought to get you started.

I'm sorry, I will always hate LaBrie's singing. He needs to tone it down.

Live, he seems quite questionable intonation-wise these days, as well.

I think LaBrie is a good singer, but I can see what you mean. When I first was getting into DT, I wasnt crazy about his voice, but it grew on me.

It grew on me too, then fell out of favor again. :p

His intonation live sounds better to me now than it ever has. When I saw them on Gigantour he was near perfect.

I agree that he needs to tone it down sometimes. Some of his best performances are the more relaxed ones.

Moses 01-23-2006 11:37 PM

I say Labrie sounds nasal.

Ithink that Labrie's best vocal performances were on Awake. Lifting Shadows of a Dream, The Silent Man, Innocence Faded, Voices. All brilliant singing. I wish he'd go back to that. He does sound a little nasal now.

CoF 01-24-2006 03:23 AM

I love LaBries vocals on In The Name Of God.

Thats pretty cool footage with a great backing music.

Fun Fact: The commentator (His name is Bob Costas) went to my high school with Rosie O' Donald.

I'm still amazed by James' voice everytime I hear him.

He's possibly my second favourite vocalist ever, now.

MidnightRider 01-24-2006 11:55 AM

The vocals are possibly my favorite part about DT.

providing james' voice is as good in april as it has been for the last year, when he's kept getting better and better, the new dvd will probably be the best yet. he is singing better than i've heard for years, aswell as hitting all the usual high notes he's even throwing in extra ones, whereas before like on budokan, he'd either just shout the words or sing an octave lower.

Wow. I've gotten used to him not going for that high note (from watching the LSFNY version). That was unbelievable.

I listen to DT for the first time yesterday, and I ****ing love them. So far my favorite is "As I Am"

I love LSFNY for his vocals, but because of emotion in them, not the range.

Congrats. Your DT cherry has been popped.

I agree. He did an amazing job on Learning to Live, probably still my favorite performance of his I've seen. It's just surprising to hear him go for that note and hit it solidly.

On the subject of his LSFNY vocals, does anyone else absolutely love Beyond This Life? He doesn't do it perfectly, his voice cracks a bit in one of the verses, but I like it so much better than on Budokan where he stays at a comfortable level and doesn't put as much power into it.

Lord Abortion 01-24-2006 06:14 PM

The spirit carries on does it for me, I'm almost in tears when I hear that

GenuineImitation 01-24-2006 07:02 PM

Whats everyones favorite song on Awake (besides Space Dye Vest)

Mine is either Voices or The Mirror.

Lord Abortion 01-24-2006 07:13 PM

Silent man FTW.

Up The Irons 01-24-2006 07:17 PM

He's horrible on that song live. Instead of "Goooood" he says it so short.

Voices. The Mirror is just trying to be too metal.

Labrie has a lot of trouble with the high notes live. Both times I've seen DT he's struggled to sustain them, and his voice has even failed him sometimes.
