damn i was looking forward to it too...the DSOTM that is.

yea spirit carries on is emotional. especially live...idk. i'd be hard-pressed to find a song more powerful. im a huge fan of through her eyes as well :]

whoever can get an mp3 file of the DSOTM covers will be for a long time, synonymous with God.

The Spirit Carries On is one of the best songs I have ever heard. Brilliant beyond belief.

MRDuCran 05-02-2006 07:42 PM

Hey everyone, I have a powertab of Never Enough, and I'm completely, totally, seriously loving the guitar/keyboard Unison/harmony lead part that starts off with that Gminsus2 arpeggio. The problem is, I can't see how John played the last 2 beats of every 2nd bar like the way it's tabbed, and given the tempo is 128bpm, and he's playing 16th note triplets and the pattern would be hard to play accurately at even a slower tempo. I know it's JP an' everythin' but dang!

Is there any sort of official tab or anything, or has anyone got a tab with more accurate fingerings for this section, I'd love to learn it the right way. Thanks.

ghettoeddo 05-03-2006 12:49 AM

i have the official tab book...but it's actually worse than the powertab. the fingerings are near impossible at that speed.

i'd say the powertabs is actually your best bet :\ or muck through it and find your own fingerings.

taht's my favorite part of the song too...too bad it's the ONLY part i cant play :upset:

you know what you CAN do also...figure out the key for those runs in the last half of the bar...and omit troublesome notes. if you can keep it 1-2 notes per string and a steady pattern like that, it shiouldn't be too bad. the problem comes when there's like...3 notes, 2, 3, then 1 note on another adjacent string.

Had they ever played Space Dye Vest live, I would've thought it would've been more powerful.

Nope, out of respect to Kevin Moore. They've asked him to be a guest at a couple concerts now, but he's always declined.
Nah I can't say that happens to me.

Could be my lack of hands.
Really? Try body percussion.

Yeah I knew that :p
I was saying it would be more powerful than TSCO if they did.

Totally.

As far as SDV goes...I know it would be great, but I can't see Kevin ever doing it.

Jev 05-03-2006 09:36 AM

Maybe we can "persuade" him to do it :)

Beautiful.

All you guys have to do to open the DSOTM cover is to download Stuffit. I hate having a Mac though, cause stuff like this always happens. If that doesn't work, drop me your AIMs and I'll send it to you that way.

GenuineImitation 05-03-2006 03:09 PM

My friend who I got into DT has an Aunt that went to school with Petrucci. I may be meeting Petrucci and/or the entire band.

R&Mer of the Year Part 2 is finally up. Go vote when you get a chance.

ghettoeddo 05-03-2006 05:09 PM

dude what the eff...you people that live in long island...BAH so jealous.

i would commit genocide to shake hands/meet petrucci in person.
...maybe.

I seriously doubt that book is official then, unless you know 100% that Petrucci sat there and transcribed it all for them to publish, otherwise it's probably just some random guys doing their best like any other tab book, which would explain the even worse fingerings.

I might have a go at re-arranging it, I think I tried before and gave up though...

If everyone had a Mac, the world would be a better place.

*Slackware GNU/Linux - Gnome Desktop, not quite a Mac, but close enough

yea it's 2 guys who interpreted it their way. for the most part, it's hwo petrucci plays it though. but obviously, the solo sections are gonna have huge discrepancies.

sorry man~
if you get a better ararngement...let me know. cuz i really wanna learn it too

Jev 05-04-2006 12:59 AM

They could've watched Petrucci live and got the fingerings from that :-/
It would've been more accurate.

Would it be too much trouble to scan the page, or change the powertab to how it is in the book? Maybe if it is actually the way John plays, it might make some sense.

My music teacher at college has studied with Petrucci before. He's not a fan of his style of playing though so it's not the best thing in the world for him.

GenuineImitation 05-04-2006 02:52 PM

I found out I wont be meeting Petrucci, but he will be signing some of my stuff. Im going to send my Images&Words cd jacket and the Octavarium 2005/2006 world tour program.

ghettoeddo 05-04-2006 04:50 PM

that's good enough.

he plays it too fast live for anyone to remember exactly what he played unless you recorded it. but i doubt you can get a good quality recording of it anywhere...

MRDucran, i don't have a scanner...and im not good at powertabs. but ill see what i can do. i really think the powertabs version is better, it has much less string skipping and position shifting

the MPA isn't gonna like...take me out for copying the "official" tab book right?

ghettoeddo 05-04-2006 05:23 PM

nvm i edited it. it's spot on. some parts are smoother by keeping 3 note-patterns on one string, but it's also got more rougher string-skipping parts.

give me your e-mail and ill drop it to you

MRDuCran 05-04-2006 07:00 PM

kirkhammettlive@hotmail.com, thanks.

ghettoeddo 05-05-2006 12:14 AM

done.

you know kirk hammett has nothing on petrucci ;)

Jev 05-05-2006 01:07 AM

I think MrDucran knows that :p

Lord of Sword 05-05-2006 05:20 AM

I've got a bootleg from last Halloween where they play all of Octavarium. It's filmed from the audience and the quality isn't that great but you can see roughly where he's playing the unison, so unless it's more a problem of not knowing which strings he's playing instead of whereabout on the fretboard, I could upload that part of the video later.

MRDuCran 05-05-2006 09:16 AM
done.

Haha yeah. I created that back when Metallica were my life, and I didn't have an emila at the time. Petrucci's chops are incredible. Thanks for the tab, I'll check it out and give it a shot!

It's been so long since I listened to 8v. I need to borrow it off someone.

GenuineImitation 05-05-2006 05:02 PM

Im learning the heavier part of Sac. Sons now.

ghettoeddo 05-05-2006 05:03 PM

yea i learned that song too :]
the only trouble is the weird whammy bar part...but you can just make that up heh.

the heavy riff withj the pinch harmonics is SEXY i love playing it

Rattlehead 05-06-2006 05:55 AM

"all face our sacrificed sons..."
i love that song.

Lord Abortion 05-06-2006 06:04 AM

It's brilliant...I only realised a month or so ago how fantastic that song really is.

Given it's subject matter, I would have felt it meant alot to them to play it in New York.

Yeah. My dad didn't like it at first because they had a clip of the twin towers burning and he was there that day (he worked about a block away). But then I told him what the song was about, he was fine.

I realized how great the song was about 2 or 3 months ago. I always liked it, but now I love it.
