Then explain why so many emo bands sound so similar? Are you really going to maintain that people in emo bands have such good ears that they can emulate the exact chords and stylings of each other by ear? That's BS. They talk to each other, in real life and in places like here, and figure out common theoretical ground and use that as a means of emotional release.
Look, dude, I know there's common chords, I know there's common techniques, I know that and that a lot of bands use those, but I'm saying there is no PROPER way to write an emo song.

Wow 03-20-2006 01:30 PM
When did everyone's testes get twisted?
I honestly had no idea this would create an argument.

I said it before, I'll say it again.
I'm not going to be ripping off any "emo theory."
I just want to know what I'm listening to.
What chords would use to create a specific mood, as well as what scales, and key and modes I would be able to use to augment this mood that certain emo bands are able to obtain.
For all you know, I could be playing blues and just want to broaden the whole genre of blues by adding this touch of hardcore to it.
I don't have a real problem with learning about what you're listening to, I had a problem with Wizard telling you how to write a song.

deadohiosky9 03-20-2006 01:42 PM

SGlove, i misunderstood your question. my bad dude.

Wow 03-20-2006 01:43 PM

Oh of course dude, I know all that. Once again, I'm just saying there isn't a proper way to write one.

And yes, theory owns. My dad teaches me quite a bit when he visits.

SGlove 03-20-2006 01:50 PM

Hey it's all good.
At least there were no ego's going round just doin the I'm right, your wrong thing.

Wow, I didn't read it as him telling me how to, but more along the lines of him tryin to help me out.
But whatever man.
You live, learn, then you get luvs.

Matt? 03-20-2006 02:12 PM
I don't have a real problem with learning about what you're listening to, I had a problem with Wizard telling you how to write a song.
I didn't tell him anything close to how to write his music. All I said was a few common things I've seen in emo music, and told him to play whatever he wants. Then you get pissed at this, and iterate the same damned thing. Maybe you should learn to read posts before you respond.
There's no correct structure or technique or proper chords or anything that goes into writing an emo song. You shouldn't be told what's common in different styles. Play what you want, how you want, when you want, as long as you think it's good.

tons and tons of octave chords and lots of minor 7ths in less chaotic stuff. Other than that, whatever you think sounds good. Lot's of bands seem to make up chords as they go along, using alot of dissonant notes to throw things off. Just mess around and see what sounds good. Don't worry about time signatures or beats either. Emo doesn't seem to focus on anything like that.
Matt? 03-20-2006 03:17 PM

i think that he just thought you were generalizing the sound of emo

pixiesfanyo 03-20-2006 03:35 PM
i think that he just thought you were generalizing the sound of emo
I think HARDCORE is just about being CRUCIAL and EMOTIONAL. THEORY has no PLACE IN THE INTENSITYYYY.

I ALSO QUOTE pg.99* IN MY ARGUMENTS!

*Not really though because they stole the quote from Kurt Cobain.

Wow 03-20-2006 03:41 PM

Wizard, shut up. I read your post, don't use the tired "Learn to read" line against me. If anything, this would have to do with reading comprehension.

This is the internet. This is text. You should know the way you say something has a dramatic effect on how it's interpretted so when using text, chose your words carefully or someone may take it a way it wasn't intended.

nah

cbmartinez 03-20-2006 09:11 PM

You people bitching about SGlove and Wizard are just trying to boost your authentic image by being like, "there's no way to write emo man. It's from your heart." By doing so, you end up looking like bigger tools than he does. He was just asking a simple question and like Dfelon said, one of the main thigns about theory is analyzing different songs within a genre and finding similarities in structure and form.

deadohiosky9 03-21-2006 12:29 AM

zombies111 03-21-2006 01:24 AM

pixiesfanyo 03-21-2006 06:05 AM

1. There is no proper way.
2. I already said I have no problem with SGlove and I misunderstood Wizard 'cause of his poor wording.
3. <3

cbmartinez 03-21-2006 02:14 PM

I <3 you Ash.

To SGlove: Nah, I wasn't calling you a tool.

SGlove 03-21-2006 02:46 PM

Wow 03-21-2006 03:06 PM

Why does grind suck?

deadohiosky9 03-21-2006 03:07 PM

dude grind is so f'ucking bad.

pixiesfanyo 03-21-2006 03:16 PM

/likes grind.

Matt? 03-21-2006 03:21 PM

some grind is alright if it's interesting

that's the problem i have with grind, it all sounds the same to me

RetiredAt21 03-21-2006 03:33 PM

Grind is awesome.

deadohiosky9 03-21-2006 03:38 PM

i don't see why people like it. its just a bunch of random noise played fast with indistinguishable guitar riffs and vocals that sound like Satan vomiting on christians. the only interesting thing about grind are the funny song titles.

cbmartinez 03-21-2006 04:11 PM

I like grind stuff if it's particulary heavy or weird/inventive. I don't understand people who listen to all grind, most of it does sound the same. But like I said, some bands do it well by making it unique or just being br00tal.

pixiesfanyo 03-21-2006 04:12 PM

i guess grindesque bands are better.

straight up grind is boring.

Matt? 03-21-2006 04:31 PM

damn i have 100 megabytes of space left on my computer :( what to do what to do...
