Initial verse vocals? You mean.....the growls? That's Mikael, actually.

[/intentional misunderstanding for the sake of humor]
Anyways, Mikael's finest singing point is during the acoustic sections of Godhead's Lament (screw you, Darkness :p ).

Flynn, I think I know what part you're talking about, and yes....it is amazing.

I was just watching this bootleg'd Opeth performance the guitarist in my band gave me a while ago, and it reminded me how awesome of a song A Fair Judgement is. Ok...say what you will about the rhyming scheme, some of those melodies in there are just plain  !

Werny 11-12-2005 02:32 AM

I think the greatest vocal moment for Mikael is the end of... dear God what's it called again? Moonlapse Vertigo? I think that's it, anyway, I love his vocals in that bit, I just rewind it over and over again.

And my favourite Opeth moment is probably the "his soul is a vortex" part in Baying of the Hounds, or the "I have sacrificed more than I have!" in Beneath The Mire... I dunno. Or just the whole The Drapery Falls song.

/Is seeing Opeth tonight in St.pete.

I cant wait. Not being a Death metal fan I have never heard of the two opening acts, Nevermore and...Someone else..(Forget)

Anyway, Can't wait to see it :)

Nevermore arent Death Metal...

But anyways, I hope i go see Opeth in their next tour. February I think... not to sure.

Toaster 11-12-2005 10:32 AM

I think his greatest vocal moment is in Hours of Wealth. The part where it's just him and the guitar. His voice totally carries the song, and it's probably the song where he sings in tune the most. I think Ghost Reveries has his greatest vocals ever overall.

Sry if that sounded sarcastic, it didnt mean to be.

Det_Nosnip 11-12-2005 10:48 AM

Nevermore has some death influences, but the vocals are more power/thrash orientated and mostly clean. You'll probably dig 'em.....great band.

Stormrider 11-12-2005 10:49 AM

Hey for the tour in february, are Opeth touring alone ?

I think overall Godhead's Lament is probably some of Mikeal's greatest vocal work.
I'll be sure to check them out. They sound pretty cool.

Today while listening to BWP I realized that my favorite Opeth riff is the one that comes on at about 3:15 in Bleak, when the clean vocals come in. It's so beautiful and climatic.
That's also one of my favorites. It's a great clean passage. It reminds me of elevator music with pizzazz. :p

Kage 11-12-2005 11:28 AM

I'm not sure I'd take that as a compliment...:) I do love that riff, though.

I concur.

Now, some of you get on MSN and give me some November's Doom.

Cain 11-12-2005 11:37 AM

There was a big thread on November's Doom a while back. I think Det Nosnip made it, or possibly Dancin' Man. I have a few of their songs, it's kind of like Agalloch except with better drumming and vocals.

The Moors vocal lines are much better. :D

And faith+1, you will love Nevermore... I'm slowly becoming a fanboy of that band. :upset:

I think its safe to say Mikeals best vocal work lies within Still Life.

Hehe, my new find is getting recognition. :D

Scruples, if you aren't already a part of the Daily Upload, go sign up for it. My friend (the one that I downloaded Novembers Doom onto his computer) sent out an album of theirs for the email.

If not, I'll forward you the link.

Marshall, you'll like Nevermore. Their vocalist doesn't growl, and they're all great musicians, which I'm sure are 2 pluses for you. :)

I just got back from Sam Goody. It's triple reward points day and I bought 4 CDs, so I should get back over $10 in coupon form :D.

I bought November's Doom after Shattered whoring them on here (and I downloaded two somewhat alright tracks). Everytime I've gone to look in to N section, I noticed them, but never heard anything about them until now. So **** you if it turns out to be a bad album :D

I also bought a Sigur Ros CD. Takk I believe.

Nick Drake's Pink Moon was in the used section, so I bought that (even though I already have a burnt copy) and a Stravinsky CD for good measure.

I bought all of that for $40.62 :D Not bad.

And Nevermore was brought up last page. I bought TGE a while back which I found amazingly disappointing after all the praise I've heard around these forums. The vocals are bad. Baaaaaad.

OPETH SUCKS

ORCHID: I haven't heard but one song off it, it's ok but the stupid metal harmony riffs get repeated too much, vocals suck, production sucks.

MORNINGRISE: Nice acoustics, but lame vocals, bad production, stupid growls, BORING BORING riffs that get repeated forever just to make that song longer, that drummer sucks and why does that bass have that stupid phaser on all the time? Weak.

MY ARMS YOUR HEARSE: This is better but they still repeat too many riffs. Dumb. Plus that concept is really stupid.

STILL LIFE: Finally, they decide to go all out metal and then record a bunch of guitars with no distortion. On the first song: did they have to copy the Stairway to Heaven progression, transpose it down to Gm and then rip off Iron Maiden like that? Jesus, are we Jeff Buckley all of a sudden? What's with Benighted? Christ, those riffs get repeated for a long time. You can almost see the dotted barlines.

BLACKWATER PARK: Ugh, now everything has too much reverb. And christ, these lyrics are bad. Why does everyone say that they make so much sense? How does liquid seeping from HER chest drain ME away? Wouldn't it just drain HER away? Jesus Christ, Mikael, learn English already, you've had four albums to get it right.

DELIVERANCE: Wow, production is almost at Morningrise lows here. I guess they wanted to try really hard to be heavy here. And you know what? They succeed. At TRYING, that is. A Fair Judgement has possibly the WORST OUTRO IN MUSIC HISTORY. The rest...eh. Compositionally weak. Haven't you noticed that there are more solos on this album than any other Opeth one? I wonder why?

TIME-KILLING. "I can't think of what to write to make this song 15 minutes long."
"Shut up, Peter, play a solo, you suck at writing anyway."

DAMNATION: This. Is. Not. Metal. That said, it's a pretty decent impression of Pink Floyd. Maybe Opeth should become comedians.

GHOST REVERIES: I think I'll let Flynn take care of this one.

///hopes this will incite different conversational topics. ;)

I'm kidding, though. I love Opeth. :) I also am only half-kidding about that part. I like it, but it's also clearly the result of compositional immaturity.

Hit me up with your email...*insert rapper speak here*.

Opeth repeats same riffs over and over again? Blasphemy! They DON'T repeat their riffs.

In their first 2 albums, they never repeat a single riff, aside from that riff's repetition cycle...once it's played, it's history.

Shadows 11-12-2005 12:27 PM

Repetitivness is what keeps me from loving Orchid.

Yeah, but the repetition cycle is usually something like twenty times. And what do you call the outro to Advent?
They reached maturity at Still Life - Blackwater Park, IMO.
Yeah, I agree.

Their riffs are good enough to be played 20 times.

And twenty times of a riff really isn't all that much. A lot of good rock songs repeat 2 or 3 riffs for an entire song.

scenesfromatheater 11-12-2005 12:35 PM

The Grand Conjuration is my favourite Opeth song (I only have Ghost Reveries), but all of the song is just a few riffs played over loads of times.

Cain 11-12-2005 12:35 PM
Their riffs are good enough to be played 20 times.

Yeah, but the song is three minutes and they usually throw in a bridge. With Opeth, at least in the early days, it'd be one acoustic bit for those exact same three minutes.

Don't argue with me, you were the one that wanted a change in the discussion. :p

I took his whole post as being a joke. It was really funny, either way. Besides, Bleak has some of the best lyrics/vocal melodies ever.
