Gag.
Purple, could you check to see if those links are bad? Because they're phayling on me right before the pop-up before the download comes up, and I'm not sure if it's by computer or Teh Linx.
i'll give you something to gag on
No thanks. |
i'll give you something to gag on

I just saw a video with Pink Floyd when they played live. I must say that there wasn't anything special about it. It felt just as the studio versions when they played, and everybody just stood there all stiff playing their parts. Although, I'm not talking down on the music. THEY OWN. I love Pink Floyd. But it seems like they were nothing special live.

You do realize Pink Floyd has been recognized as the BEST live show of all time? I mean Pulse is out of this world Delicate Sound of Thunder was very great musically i've never really found a pink floyd live bootleg that sounds exactly like the studio version. Except for like Hey You off of Pulse And that's the best part is that they stand their stiff playing their parts. Gilmour doesn't need to dance to impress you, his fingers do the dancing, he's a guitarist, not Robert Plant. |

And it's not just that. Well... I really can't explain. It just feels so emotionless to stand there and play almost exactly the same as you've recorded. I'm not saying that they are bad, but compared to for example Zeppelin, as you mentioned them, I think they're not so good live. |
They are two different experiences. Pink Floyd's show, as you said, wasn't about moving around and all that, it eventually became about the light show and the effects they brought with them. Zeppelin, though they used a light show, never did it to the extent of Floyd and made up for it with moving and pouring energy into their shows.
Also, the music is just too different to compare. Zeppelin's music called for a rowdy live show with Plant's screaming and Bonham's pounding, etc. Floyd's music just didn't call for that, at all. |

As someone who saw Floyd in 1994, they were anything BUT stiff. They were mindblowing. My dad video taped the Pink Floyd concert he went to into 1973, it's incredible as well.

Dream Theater's cover of Echoes part 1. dont say "ewwww dream theater" it is a damn good cover. |
Can't wait to hear this, I love DT.
thanks gilmour |
Ewwww, Dream Theater.
Just kidding, I might have to check this out a bit later. |
I used to have DT doing a cover of Comfortably Numb and Hey You on my other computer. It was pretty cool.
After playing the first solo for about 6 months, I think i almost have it perfected.
It's amazing how easy something can look in tab form, yet playing it is another story. The amount of emotion involved in every little bend is amazing. Either you have to play it with your heart or not at all.
6 months.... wow... |
6 months.... wow...
Yeah, I learned it about 6 months ago, and am only finally starting to get the right amount of emotion into it. You wouldn't think it;s hard, but try to play it exactly how Gilmour does on The Wall, and you'll be in for a surprise. |
Actually, that is a fairly good cover that Dream Theater did.
|
I dont have anything to do, so I think i may rip a bootleg or 2 off of my dvds for you guys.
|
I think alot of people are overhyping and over analyzing how to put this and that emotion into the Comfortably Numb solos. I bet if I posted the bootleg version off The Wall tour of Gilmour playing it and claimed it as my own, people would say "you didn't catch the emotion that gilmour had!". That is in part because Gilmour is by far not the most technically proficient guitarist, and quite frankly hit alot of bum notes and out of key bends. Remember, when you are in a studio you have state of the art equipment and the best takes obviously end up on the record. Just play it like you mean it and thats the best you can do.

nnng... One of the main reasons gilmour's pl,aying is so "emotional" is because of his complex phrasing, something he doesn't really think twice about but if you see it on paper you get an idea for. The exact timing isn't somehting most people spend all their time getting, so up to a point i guess they don't get the full feel for it. |

I don't like playing solos exactly the way they are recorded. It's not the same amount of feeling in it then... It's much funnier to play your own way. |

Cause I always laugh when I play a solo my way..... |
Cause I always laugh when I play a solo my way.....
No. Because it's more fun to create something than to copy something. |
But you said funnier..... eh nevermind
|
But with such famous and short solo's as the first Comfortably Numb, I think it's better to play it the way it's written.
On other solo's like Time, Echoes, Have A Cigar, and On The Turning Way, it makes more sense to improvise more of it, because they're less nostalgic. |
I was improve a little bit on Time. Most people really dig it, but my old rhythem guitarist constantly whines about it. *sighs* he can't even begin to play that solo either.
I agree that in the first comfortably numb solo there isn't much need to improve. Like clown said, It's such a short, reconizable solo. Why change a good thing? |
nnng... something he doesn't really think twice about
That is a lie. Gilmour has gone record saying that he comes up with a bunch of licks and keeps the ones he likes, then pieces them together to create his solos. Dave also sings the guitar parts sometimes, then transfers the notes to his guitar, to avoid being "locked up" by any visual guitar style. Saying that he doesn't think twice about his phrasing is just wrong. Also I know he is very "emotional" but my main point was refuting the "I get the notes right, but the emotion is another thing". Chances are if complex phrasing = emotion like you said then people wouldn't be saying that because they are reading his notes off a **** tab. |
