Yep, Still Life is most certainly a concept album. Sputnik has a great review of the album with the basic outline of the story.
Hey, that's really cool, could you possibly link me? :)

Cheers, that was a good read.

Quite. He didn't do justice to the story though :)

That IS a helluva story. Serenity Painted Death and Godhead's Lament are especially intense...I never understood what a lot of the Godhead's Lament lyrics are supposed to mean. Perhaps about the man's alienation from his religion. Why is the song called Godhead's Lament? My only idea is that it's supposed to evoke imagery of Jesus weeping for his lost child but at the same time compares the Godhead to a dead sculpture in the eyes of the protagonist.

Serenity Painted Death is just nuts. You can just see the sick rage the man goes into as he takes his revenge

Face of Melinda is my favorite song on it though, and my favorite Opeth song.

What a great album.

I didn't know it and BWP were named after obscure 70s bands either. Very interesting. I have to look them up now.

That line is teh secks.

The chorus on that song is one of the few times where I actually enjoy, rather than tolerate, the growling. 'White face, haggard grin of this serenity painted death.' It just sounds so evilly awesome.

Deth 10-03-2005 08:10 PM

I went about 3 days last week where I said that line about 30 times a day. I didn't make any new friends either.

Kaiwaz 10-03-2005 08:18 PM

I just listened to Morningrise on a boat in the middle of Spirit Lake...speachless.

What, did you growl it like Mike?

To do this, you really have to be alone, as was I, with headphones. You don't want idiot drunk friends interrupting the beauty. Not to mention, I was really f***ed up and the moon looked crazy!

Imagine starting the album right before sunrise out on the water, then just as To Bid You Fairwell kicks in, the sunrise begins and the rays of light flash along the water... :thumb:

hahah, that would be one cold *** morning though :p I listen to Morningrise in the winter the most, I don't know why.

Darkness 10-03-2005 09:20 PM

Do it during summer, and wear a jacket. :p

Kaiwaz 10-03-2005 09:27 PM

It was cool, right when To bid You Farewell ended, the lake suddenly became calm. I thought I was dreaming for a second...then I thought to myself ''hey, I'm f***ing wasted!''

relliK 10-03-2005 09:54 PM

I wanna listen to Pelican at the beach. That would own.

I remember when I went to my great grandpa's ranch in Mexico last year.It was surrounded by miles of forest.I had Blackwater Park with me.PERFECT MUSIC for it.The Ebow riffs in the background that give the songs a "monolithic" feel really set it off.

Anyway, I'm in love with the outro to Hours of Wealth right now.It makes me picture Mikael sitting in a bar alone getting wasted. It's so bluesy.

Cardboard Headgear 10-03-2005 09:59 PM

You haven't heard Morningrise till you've listened to it driving through the Scottish highlands in the mist. Man, that was such a great way to get into my first Opeth album. Good memories, even better image association with that album.

Simon__Thats_All 10-04-2005 03:04 AM

I'm listening to Damnation, and suddenly realising how beautiful the backing harmony vocals are. I've never paid them mcuh attention before...

i am the robots 10-04-2005 07:05 AM

It's true though, Black Sabbath is like the earliest band to gther mainstream attention that can actually be called Metal without the person saying they're Metal looking retarded (unlike Led Zeppelin and The Who).

Det_Nosnip 10-04-2005 12:52 PM

That's interesting, because Sabbath never considered themselves heavy metal. They started out as a blues outfit, after all, just like Led Zeppelin. The thing is that both bands introduced elements that would be crucial in the development of metal. I mean...you can't say that "Whole Lotta Love" or "Heartbreaker" didn't have a huge impact on heavy metal riffing, John Bonham is one of the most influential drummers in rock and metal (much moreso than Bill Ward, although Ward is a great player), and the mark of Robert Plant's vocals are fairly self evident on the scene. Sabbath contributed the whole evil sounding dissonant riffs and gloomy atmosphere, but there's alot more to metal than that.

Also....what about Deep Purple?

Deth 10-04-2005 12:54 PM

I would consider Judas Priest the first true metal band, but that's just because I'm a fanboy.

Hehe....and you haven't heard Still Life till you've listened to it driving through the most hateful, evil storm of all time, with pouring rain, lightning flashes, and pummeling winds. Not to mention the fact that I had been up and driving for like....20 hours at the time. As the Man said it himself, "In the pouring rain....nothing is the same!"

I know what you mean, I've not driven through the Highlands listnening to Opeth yet but I came close.

Ironically, I'm Scottish :p

jamesclelland 10-04-2005 02:43 PM

hell, just driving around at night with bwp in. i live in the sticks, so when i'm working (delivering pizza) i can just crank that album and it really takes you mind off of work.

Jude 10-04-2005 05:31 PM

I have some nice countryside and mountains near where I'm at, I need to take a CD player out there and camp and listen to Opeth all night. In winter.

Has anyone ever tripped to Opeth? That seems like it would be something worth hearing about.

Hells Bells 10-05-2005 09:36 PM

Flynn said something about an experience like that earlier :p

I'd love to have that kind of an atmosphere listening to music, not ****ed up and with drunken friends hehe, but the whole think about being out on the lake in the moonlight...

Man, I can't believe this thread name discussion is still going on. Darkness Of Greed's suggestion (Your Last Look Upon the Sun) was cool too.
