I have no objection to EMA.

I just think it's fu'cking stupid that having been paid £30 a week to go to school they give you a bonus for passing, rather than refusing to give you £30 a week if you don't work hard
you dont get the £30 if you dont turn up to most of your lessons.

Pastorius 08-14-2007 08:34 AM

Screw that, education is a privilege, and if people want to throw it away, that's their prerogative.

Jon 08-14-2007 08:55 AM

EMA is the worst thought out thing EVER, so many people get it who don't deserve it, and so many people need it and don't get it.

Anyone else only really follow football at important matches? Euro/World Cup, UEFA, Champions League, FA Cup final etc?

I don't have time to follow a team the whole year, too much effort, but I love watching a good game of footie.

2muchket! 08-14-2007 09:03 AM

Nah I support and follow 3 teams atm.

I always find time for football. I'm the type of person to cancel their own wedding to go to a cup final.

rocknrollstar5 08-14-2007 09:06 AM

I dont qualify for EMA but my parents dont give me any money towards anything at college, its bollocks. Everyone should get it or no one should get it.

Jon 08-14-2007 09:09 AM

Exactly.

Also, if your parents are together there's a 99% chance they'll earn over £30k/year. No matter if they've got loads of debts or anything. Mine, and a lot of my friends' parents have lots of debt so no allowance, and no EMA.

If your parents are separated, then the national average wage is £24k, so theres a good chance they won't earn over £30k. If they have their finances sorted out, they'll have money to give you an allowance AND you'll get EMA.

Pastorius 08-14-2007 09:14 AM

The concept is ridiculous in my eyes anyway. If people want to throw away their future, it's their fault.

2muchket! 08-14-2007 09:14 AM

Well my mam's had a lot of trouble with her back so the monthly income has dropped a fair bit. But our finances are in order. Still I ain't complaining that I get £20 for doing something that I'd be doing anyway.

Dr Hooch 08-14-2007 09:36 AM
you dont get the £30 if you dont turn up to most of your lessons.
but if you get straight Fs you still get it

If you don't work hard you shouldn't get any money

if you do work hard and still get Fs the government shouldn't be paying you £30 a week to waste your time

Surf 08-14-2007 09:58 AM

tbh most of the people I know who got EMA spent it on fags and drink, and alot dropped out after the first year of sixth form.

But on the other hand I know some people who got it and worked hard

So, from what I've seen, it doesn't really have too much of an effect on keeping people in education.

2muchket! 08-14-2007 10:09 AM

It doesn't at all really. But it's nice to earn to get something as I do work hard. It wouldn't affect me staying in college either, if I didn't get EMA i'd be more motivated to get a job.

The_Passenger 08-14-2007 10:53 AM

I get EMA, but I shouldn't really. If I lived with my dad I wouldn't. Even though I get it I'd go as far as to say that it shouldn't exist.

Maybe if the requirements to get it were stricter I'd be more for it. As Dr Hooch said as long as you're attending lessons you get it, this means that people getting Es and Us regularly who are essentially wasting their time are getting paid to waste their time, even if it isn't very much.

Dr Hooch 08-14-2007 10:56 AM

Isn't very much my fu'cking arse ;)

ChodaBoy 08-14-2007 11:24 AM

What sort of college did you guys go to!? In my college it was 'turn up late - dont get paid' and 'do nothing - get nothing'. So you had to turn up and do good work, plenty of times there would be arguements in class because some teachers refused to sign it

2muchket! 08-14-2007 11:32 AM

Same here. You can't have over 4 absences and have to maintain quite a high standard of work.

Untitled 08-14-2007 11:47 AM

At my old college, if we swiped in late on two or more days of the week, we didnt get it.

On my art/design foundations i just did, i seemed to get it every week without fail.

Surtr 08-14-2007 12:09 PM

I seem to have arrived home from my 2 week vacation.

Fuck I miss it already.

Pastorius 08-14-2007 12:10 PM

Where'd you go to?

I just watched 8mm, for the second time in like 5 years, it's not a bad film. Watchable.

Surtr 08-14-2007 12:56 PM

Well, Scotland, Ireland and also Iceland.

Pastorius 08-14-2007 01:01 PM

Sounds good, I've always wanted to go to Iceland or Greenland or one of those places.

ChodaBoy 08-14-2007 01:06 PM

Same, I like the cold weather, absolutely hate when its warm

Surtr 08-14-2007 02:12 PM

Iceland was..Meh and amazing at the same time.

A LOT of the people are awful. They're some of the rudest people I've ever come across, ever. The conversion for everything is retarded. For like a burger, fries and coke it was almost £20. And that's just a normal price...Kr, is easily the worst currency ever.

Ireland was crazy.

Belfast is in ruins. The entire city is being rebuilt and it just looks awful. It's actually really sad to see it that run down. Anything that's there is either burnt to ****, or surrounded by HUGE barbed wire fences or any sort of fence with large spikes on it.

Scotland is amazing. Fucking wonderful place. I may head up there at the end of this year (My last year for school) and go there for Uni.

Dr Hooch 08-14-2007 03:15 PM

Why would you go to northern ireland? ;)

Pastorius 08-14-2007 03:25 PM

I went to Cork once. Burnt my mouth on some piping hot hot chocolate

Dr Hooch 08-14-2007 03:54 PM

I had all kinds of fun once on the cork and kerry mountains.

didn't end well.
