perpihery mixes are pretty terrible. too loud, too compressed, bass is nowhere to be found due to the fact that it just doubles what the guitar is doing.
As opposed to what? Doing the exact opposite to the guitars?

This is prog metal djent we're talking about here, if you're listening to it expecting some amazing bass work, and even getting disappointed in the fact you can't 'hear' it (you can hear it, if you were to take the bass right out of the mix, then you wouldn't hear it) then there is something very wrong here.

And don't blame them for the loudness, blame Dr Dre and Metallica.

The Transporter 06-02-2010 09:29 PM

there is one song you can hear the bass on during one part

awesome so their pass for having terrible mixes is the genre of music they play? it's completely possible to have dynamic mixing for that type of music without squishing everything so much that it just becomes dreadful on the ears to listen to. don't think i missed your sophist snide quip there, what exactly is the point in having the bass in a fashion where it isn't even playing support to the rest of the band? it's not accenting or improving any depth of sound in the mix, furthermore, it took 3 guitarists to even have a semi tolerable sound when the clang clang of nonstop LOLDJENT isn't blaring over everything else with its far too dry timbre.

and why blame dr dre and metallica for another bands loudness? periphery has complete creative control over their produce, if anything, they are the only people to point a finger at.

Convectuoso 06-02-2010 11:42 PM

My point with the comment in brackets is that when you're mixing you often do this thing where you're like "man I can't hear the bass" so instead of turning it up. You mute it, then you go, 'oh wait there it is'. They're downtuning and using 7/8(?) stringers anyways so there's not much room for a bassist anyways.

It isn't a pass, that's just how things are. Show me mix of a metal song or a djent song that isn't mastered loudly?

And I can totally blame dre. Since the loudness war, music is expected by the masses to be loud. Stupid kids get confused when they put their CD in and it ain't blaring them in the face with their stereos master volume at 2. Hence the pressure to master loudly. I don't blame the mastering engineer I blame the audience and radio.

Without hearing an un-mastered mix of a Periphery song up against a mastered one you can't make a judgment really.

you mean bulb is the only person to point the finger at

i'm pretty sure the other members are all just for show

and i couldn't agree more periphery waves are just one big fat block of **** but joel is right, its not their fault. they want to be a successful band in that genre, and what sells? big fat blocks of ****

no dynamics. one volume.

you know, i've listened to the song light about 5 million times. its the only good song with that new singer guy, and i'm pretty sure there isn't even a chorus or verse or anything. its just literally all the same volume, tonality, and intensity over and over and over.

i mean even the WHISPERED VOCALS are as loud as the screams. what the ****? how does that make any sense? it all just ends up sounding so fake and melodyne is to blame for that

but im not really being critical of periphery i'm being critical of dumb fans who think this is how music is supposed to sound

i really don't want to do this but i think i have to compare them to a band like tool

even though madly successful, its hard to find a (progressive? idk) metal band do dynamics better - especially vocals

and all without melodyne

The thing is, I reckon (and I'm kinda quoting slipperman here) that there are no recording engineers that can make it as a musician.
Steve Albini, who in many circles is the greatest recording engineer of all time, has been in 2-3 fairly successful bands

Epidemechanical 06-03-2010 01:00 AM

and devin townsend

and bulb

and trent reznor

oops

Kuffuffled 06-03-2010 03:27 AM

The loudness war is really pretty stupid, amplifiers are around for a reason.. Just the reason I didn't want to toy with the gain of the mixes I've been working on for fear of goofing them up

I mean I love modern music and the sheer in your face volume but it's also hard on the ears, and it's nice to go back to older music that isn't so pumped

GuitarBizarre 06-03-2010 06:04 AM

Porcupine tree are successful, and the FOABP liner notes actually make note of the production not being prey to the loudness war.

So yeah, nothing 'HAS' to be that loud. THere are ways around it.

Modern Iconoclast 06-03-2010 06:21 AM

Yeah Steven Wilson has mentioned putting stickers on all of their future albums telling people to use their volume knobs. The dynamics on The Incident are incredible. But to be fair when you're a genius like Steven Wilson who does all your own mixing the label is pretty much gonna let you do whatever you want. When you're a band like Periphery and just starting out the record label pretty much has you by the balls when it comes to stuff like that.

Bruce E Kinesis 06-03-2010 06:22 AM

The loudness war is hopelessly misrepresented. Recordings with less dynamic range translate far better to MP3 and radio, which is how most people will listen to them. Quiet CDs were released for a while, but people preferred the Tape/LP style mastering, like they'd had for all the years before. Mastering with all the lights on 0dB the whole time might seem like a modern curse, but it's actually a 'vintage' way of doing things.

I see Josh has already made an appearance on the comments page.

Also, stop having serious discussions in the Lod.

Which came first the chicken or the egg?

Devin, was a musician before a engineer...Same with bulb...same with Trent I'd say too.

Albini's a rare exception to the rule I'd say.

AG 06-04-2010 12:49 AM

Why are we mentioning bulb in the same sentence as devid?

I'm listening to Baroness, saw them when they opened for Coheed and Cambria, hadn't heard them yet though

Their drummer is a riot, that kid was fun to watch

AG 06-05-2010 02:58 AM

Ung, moving house is stressful.

A week ago I had a nice clean, organised flat. Now I have two houses in utter chaos.

But anyways. Spent the night in the new house for the first time, we bought a new bed and it's over 9000 times more comfortable than our old one.

What I don't get is why clean parts must be so ****ing loud. Sure, you might want heavy parts compressed and punchy. But why should clean and mellow parts get the same treatment? It is very easy controlling the amount of compression a section gets from the mastercomp with automation.
Is it laziness or does people really like when a piano is noticeably sucked back to the same level the heavy section earlier was in?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0ynjjk2c7Y
This song for example is extremely dynamic. (compared to metal atleast...) It's around 15db rms difference between the quietest and loudest part. And the volume is all over the place in the between those extremes, it's a quite repetive song but it still keeps the interest going because of the dynamics. And isn't that what we want the music to be? Sure it can be hard to incorporate all the volume changes a orchestra does in metalband situation, but you definitely can do some of them.

http://soundclick.com/share?songid=7978855
These guys definitely managed to pull it off. So why can't other bands do it?

And no one can blame the mp3's for the lack of macrodynamics nowadays. No one can listen 128kbits willingly these days, right? 320 and flac isn't a problem anymore with the crazy harddrives that comes out at the moment.

You seem to try really hard at everything. Like at humour and other stuff, I can see a clear amount of effort you're putting in. I bet you rewrite your posts several times and plan them while your machine is booting up.
