Anyone heard about the new energy drink?

http://abcnews.go.com/Health/story?id=2459718&page=1

Sept. 18, 2006 -- Most people know what cocaine is, and now Redux Beverages in Las Vegas is offering what it calls a "legal alternative" to the illegal drug in form of an energy drink.

Jamey Kirby, the drink's inventor, says the name for the drink — Cocaine — came to him during a brainstorming session at 1 o'clock in the morning.

"It's an energy drink, and it's a fun name," says Kirby. "As soon as people look at the can, they smile."

Kirby says Redux wanted to make a beverage that would send a sensation to the mouth. He describes Cocaine, the new beverage, as a "fruity, atomic fireball" drink.

Real Cocaine?

The 8.4 fluid ounce energy booster has no actual cocaine in it, but it does contain 280 milligrams of caffeine. According to the company's Web site, the only way to get more caffeine per ounce is with an espresso.

"It's just a bad idea and has all the same downsides of too much caffeine plus a very bad name," says Dr. Charles O'Brien a professor and vice chairman of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania.

The beverage is marketed to give a person a "high" coupled with a tingly euphoric feeling within five minutes of drinking it. That initial boost is followed 15 minutes later by an energy buzz that will last five to six hours, according to the company.

Kirby claims Cocaine is "350 percent stronger than Red Bull" but that people do not experience the "sugar crash" or jitters that he says some of the other energy drinks can produce.

The Secret Formula?

Kirby confesses that a "throat-numbing" ingredient is added to the drink to emulate its namesake, but he won't divulge the identity of that add-in, saying it's confidential.

"We're getting a phenomenal response," says Kirby, crediting the can's simple design and product promotion for the drink's early success among consumers from high school kids to 30-year-olds.

The company isn't hiding from mixing Cocaine with alcohol. On the drink's Web site, www.DrinkCocaine.com, it posts a variety of alcohol and Cocaine combinations.

Kirby, who says the world is ready for a beverage named after an illegal drug, has been surprised by the lack of controversy over the name of the drink.
i'll let my friends try it first. i'm not really big on energy drinks. most of them taste terrible to me.

The Brad 10-13-2006 05:20 PM

What an asshole, someone stole the valve stem caps from my tires!

Then come to find out, someone stole my friend's stereo...

I'd love to try that cocaine drink, I love energy drinks, this would just be like a really good one.

Yeah, I completely agree.

PietroCrespi 10-13-2006 07:06 PM

Why do most energy drinks have that discusting fruity taste.

I love Red Bull taste. It's like Squirt with a little something extra added in. Delicious. If only they were cheaper...

PietroCrespi 10-13-2006 07:17 PM

Red Bull is ok.

Rockstar, on the other hand, is the worst drink I've ever had.

Moon Flavor 10-13-2006 07:17 PM
Yeah... it's pretty damn expensive.
But I won't be able to afford it till January or February.

PietroCrespi 10-13-2006 07:56 PM

Anyone got a working link to the bass cheat sheet that's in the resource section?

BenJammin 10-13-2006 08:45 PM

Yeah, it'll probably be 3 months till I can get a cab. I don't even know what brand to go with. I wonder if maybe I should just get a GK cab to match the head.

bass&cookies 10-13-2006 09:11 PM

i would really have liked to have gotten a gk cab, the ones i tried sounded really nice.

i ended up buying LEC's avatar 212. it seems to be pretty solid, but really heavy.

yay for driving! i finally got my license the other day.

BenJammin 10-13-2006 09:32 PM

I get my class 5 license next month. I definitely have to go down for a new picture, on account of the fact that my hair is 2 feet shorter now than it was then.

Aerodyne 10-13-2006 09:37 PM

I'm hungry. What should I eat? I've got ramen, turkey, cheese, triscuits. . . that's about it. :upset: I have a feeling it's going to be ramen with turkey and cheese triscuits.

So I heard the only all ages club around got closed down for trafficing cocaine and selling booze to someone underage. It's a shame, that's where all of the local punk bands played.

bass&cookies 10-13-2006 09:39 PM

hah. i was in canada for a bit when we were on vacation over the summer. was an interesting experience, it's really wierd the first time you see a sign saying speed limit:100

Haha, yeah. It's weird getting behind the wheel of an American car and having the speedometer read with the MPH on top and the KMPH on the bottom.

Where were you in Canada?

That sucks. We had something like that happen to our all ages club a couple of years ago. All of the punk bands sucked, but it was fun to go down and hang out with everybody and just mosh and have a good time.
