Krautrock has it's moments with me too. Tago Mago's (CAN) first 4 songs are incredible then the album just falls apart after that. If Yeti (Amon Duul II) didn't have a singer it'd be my favorite Krautrock album. So Far (Faust) is great except in some of the songs it goes from really cool space prog to annoying freak out noise. Unfortunately all the Krautrock I've heard has followed this same pattern. :-/
What did you think of Tago Mago?
I really, really dig Paperhouse. The middle section with the wispered vocals is just oustanding. The rest of the album is decent, but nothing to great. The vocals in Yeti ruin that album for me too. I really liked the Cosmic Jokers stuff I heard. I haven't heard any Faust yet, but I might check them out eventually. I heard the first Ash Ra Tempel album, it was pretty good. Unfortunately, I agree with you about a lot of it falling into the same pattern. It seems like there would be so much room for originality in a genre like krautrock, but often times it sounds the same to me. Edit: I did download a lot of albums from that blog a couple days ago with that free rapidshare account, mostly prog and some more krautrock. I haven't been able to listen to some of those artists yet, so we'll see if I find any hidden gems. I was very pleased with Nektar's A Tab In the Ocean and really want to check out Remember the Future, although they aren't krautrock. |
Hey, we all bitch about something every now and then. And I agree with him, it's not necessary to constantly bring up a band you hate. Ray was doing it with the Grateful Dead and I said something to him about it. No one is trying to hate on your opinion, it's just that jokes get old sometimes.
When was the last time I made a crack about Jefferson Airplane? You're just saying "jokes get old" because it's a joke about a band you like but whatever I'll stop making "smart *** comments" about them if it'll make the thread happy. We crack on AC/DC all the time but no-one seems to upset over them, the jokes about them are still funny right but when someone makes a joke about Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead..etc people get upset. I guess this is understandable that we'd defend the bands we like but I think it's rather hypocritical that you'd say jokes get old when AC/DC gets heat from everyone. I would have to agree with you, "Paper House" is very great. I haven't listened to Ash Ra Tempel's s/t for a long time I think I'll listen to it tonight. What exactly do the Cosmic Jokers sound like?
|
Does anyone else here think The Animals are pretty sweet? I got Retrospective a couple weeks ago, and I'm digging pretty much every song. Ecspecially House of the Rising Sun, it's one of my favorite songs of all time.
Also, does anyone like aoxomoxoa? I'm really into it at the moment. I think the gem off this album is Doin' That Rag. |

Peronsally, I can't remember making fun of AC/DC, but whatever. The "cheap shots" always got on my nerves, even if they aren't excessive and are just meant as jokes. I guess that's just me. But whatever, we're having a good discussion so lets not argue about something pointless.
If you're going to get into Faust look for IV and So Far. What exactly do the Cosmic Jokers sound like?
Cosmic Jokers are somewhat like other krautrock groups, in terms of the constant "drone" (or whatever you call it), but at many points they seem to be more related to psychedelic music and more spacey. Then again, sometimes they have an almost annoying sound, just as the same with other krautrock groups. I'm not very good at describing them, but they do have an interesting sound that warrants a listen. Perhaps I'll upload some of their stuff if a few people express interest. |
Would you mind uploading a song or two? I can't find Cosmic Jokers anywhere except those crazy blogs that I can't use. Have you heard Neu? They're supposed to be really good, a friend is going to let me borrow Neu '75 soon and I'm wanting some opinions before I give them a listen.
|
Nah, haven't heard them either. Aside from Can, the only krautrock I have is really just the stuff from the blogs we've discovered.
The Cosmic Jokers songs are supposed to be in the 20-minute range, but when I downloaded the album it split each large song into three sections. Which I guess is good for a sampler. |
I don't even remember the last time we talked about AC/DC.
I don't mind people making fun of bands though, because I respect everyone's tastes and know that everyone here actually listens to the music before they make fun of it. I'm a pretty light-hearted guy, so I don't really care if someone makes fun of a band. But for the whole Jefferson Airplane thing, I can see how it annoys people because we weren't even talking about them when you made that comment. It would be different if we were talking about them and you said you didn't like them, but it was like you were trying to fit a critical remark into your post. I think that's just unnecessary and I can see how it gets old and annoys people. As for krautrock, I'm not a huge fan. Some of it is interesting, but I find some of it very boring. I haven't downloaded from the site in a while. I've been on a jamband downloading spree off archive.org for the last couple days. Tea Leaf Green are so good. And I don't have much space on my hard drive left. |
Schyma, do you have AIM or something? It would be easier just to give you the link rather than email it out.
Some krautrock is boring, sometimes it just isn't pleasent to listen to. |
I never knew just how bad Bruce Springsteen was until a few days ago when I heard Born to Run for the first time. Now I now why he's banned from Texas radio! I swear I cannot believe he was that bad. Everyone talks so bad about him and yet he's very popular; I thought I should at least give him a chance right? Well I did, I listened to the whole album (Born to Run) and when the final song was over I was left scratching my head as to why in the hell did I made myself suffer through this grotesque excuse for music. I am shrouded in mystery over why in the world anyone in their right state of mind would want to listen to such music. Guess I'll never understand "the Boss"....
Here's something we can agree on.
Also, does anyone like aoxomoxoa? I'm really into it at the moment. I think the gem off this album is Doin' That Rag.
Aoxomoxoa was my first Dead album, and I loved it on the first listen, still do. Tago Mago goes from great to absolutely terrible. Aside from it, I haven't heard much Krautrock, but I did download Kraan's s/t off of 8 Days In April. I love it. From start to finish I wasn't bored once, a 5 star album. I'm almost done downloading Galactic Supermarket, and I have great expectations. |
That's good news, I downloaded that but haven't had a chance to listen to it yet.
Jac's outspoken about artists he doesn't like. Haha. It's like his trademark. He's also outspoken about artists he DOES like. I mean, you mention Kelly Clarkson once and he's all about the praise. :p
 I outspeak (:S) against fags too! So piss off! Ya I'm very opinionated and I feel everyone is entitled to know my opinion on everything. IMO.
Schyma not digging the Boss.
"Born to Run" is my absolute favorite Boss song, it just shows who is the boss (no pun intended.) and the Boss is the boss, I'm still confused how you could dislike the Boss he is the Boss. So ya I like them! Kraut Rock hm lets see I dig Kraftwerk, Can, Faust, Neu!, Ash Ra Tempel, Amon Duul of course (Phallus Dei!) and various other artists. I would call it one of my favorite genres but I just don't listen to any Kraut other then Kraftwerk, Can and some Neu these days. Maybe I'll dig out some of the older stuff eh? |

My favorite album is too hard, so many great albums the Boss had.
I was waiting for you to do that. I don't think Born to Run is his best song anymore. It used to be my favorite but Backstreets has overtaken it. That song is just ridiculously amazing. Fantastic singing, great lyrics, and a brilliant piano riff. It's even better on the DVD concert from 1975. You should look into buying that because it's amazing. But at least Schyma listened to it all the way through. The Boss isn't for everyone, but it's good to see some people are at least willing to give him a try. But Born to Run isn't his best imo. The Animals rule. Burdon is an awesome singer. If he could write songs worth a crap and Price didn't leave the group because he was afraid of flying, they would have been absolutely huge. |

I tried to download Autobahn off 8 Days In April, but it said it had been removed because it was protected or some shit like that

They were huge back in the day. I always read about the Stones being the third big band from Britain behind the Beatles and Animals, but their albums just weren't classics and they didn't evolve the like the Stones or Beatles.
I don't think Born to Run could ever be dethroned for me I just love everything about it, its sorta chaotic but really pretty at the same time. The piano and everything, ooohhh so good. My favorite part is the "Just wrap your legs 'round these velvet rims and strap your hands across my engines." I got into the Boss and Bob Dylan about the same time with "Born to Run" and "Like a Rolling Stone" and still to this day whenever I hear "Born to Run" I think of "Like a Rolling Stone" and visa versa. NP: Aerosmith - Sweeeeeet Emotion.
I'm so close to burning every A.F.I. cd I see.
Good job! AFI are such a hardcore punk band I think they would help you out and support it. I don't think mine is copied protected. For some odd reason I like Radio-Activity better. Usually I like what the masses like but... hm. Ugh now I feel like listening to the Boss, Kraftwerk but I really want to listen to Aerosmith.... what to doooo? |

AFI? Hardcore punk? Whatever you say Snow White.
I'm not sure what you are getting at. Ya AFI is the hardestcore punk. They started it all way back in '63 I think. Johnny Lydon wanted to sing for them but he was too much of a pussy. Then they tried out Matt Freeman but he sucked to much, then they tried out that D. Boon guy but he got in some van accident. Just a brief history of AFI - gods amoung mear mortals. |
I love Bruce Springsteen. Fuck all you guys.
My dad has been to three Bruce shows, the most recent one he has a bootleg of. He and the E Street Band are awesome live, his voice sounds just as good as it used to. I'm away for one day and this thread turns into a bitchfest :p Does anyone else in here play drums? I'm sick of reading all the 'beginner kit' threads where all the elitist idiots flame the guys and say only some $1000 kit is the only one worth it, every other one is teh suck. Isn't a Ludwig Accent 5-piece and a Zildjian ZBT 3-pack w/ free crash a good beginner set? My drummer friend says he wished he had gotten that instead of the more expensive one he got after he played it later.
I tried to download Autobahn off 8 Days In April, but it said it had been removed because it was protected or some **** like that
Yeah, artists trying to keep people from stealing their music is bullshit. |

Hook a brother up. I'll admit, I like a few Springsteen songs that I hear on the radio, but I hated Born to Run (the album.)
AFI? Hardcore punk? Whatever you say Snow White.
That reminds me that I need to get more punk. I really want to hear some Black Flag, and there was another band, but the name escapes me. EDIT: Bad Brains! |
I can't stand "the boss".
I'm not really into Krautrock either. |
That reminds me that I need to get more punk. I really want to hear some Black Flag, and there was another band but the name escapes me.
Heh, I can send out Damaged also. (Black Flag) I'll throw up Autobahn now though. Oh lookey here NP: AFI - Two of a Kind |
I'm not sure what you are getting at.
Ya AFI is the hardestcore punk. They started it all way back in '63 I think. Johnny Lydon wanted to sing for them but he was too much of a slightly confuzzled sea lion. Then they tried out Matt Freeman but he sucked to much, then they tried out that D. Boon guy but he got in some van accident. Just a brief history of AFI - gods amoung mear mortals.
I was implying that it must be hard for you to hear a great song like "Like A Rolling Stone" and be reminded of a subpar one like "Born To Run." Trav, I play drums. I started with a Yamaha Stage Custom and it's a great set. Ludwig Accents are ok but he will definitely need better cymbals. Even if he just gets the ZBT's and then starts building up to pro-level cymbals. JPJ, get Damaged for Black Flag. They're not my favorite but they're good. Edit: For Bad Brains get I Against I. Very cool band. |
Heh, I can send out Damaged also. (Black Flag) I'll throw up Autobahn now though.
That'd be awesome, thanks. |

Aoxomoxoa is perfect besides "What's Become of the Baby." That song is terrible. The rest is perfect. |
I should probably listen to Aoxomoxoa. That or Wake of the Flood. They both look interesting based on the covers. And I want more Dead.
NP: The Beatles - I Want You (She's So Heavy) |
That'd be awesome, thanks.
You're in for a treat, Black Flag are fucking awesome. High energy hardcore punk similar to Dead Kennedys, or <<<<<<<< Minor Threat  Hey, 1964! A Hard Day's Night (album and movie) came out this year. |
I was over at my best friend's house today just chillin and jammin. Him and his twin brother and his roomie are all hardcore punks and are into that kind of stuff. Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Sex Pistols, NOFX, etc... It's not that bad, IMO.
And now I'm exausted from coming back over there. My friend's brother, roomie and him make up a punk band, and I was playin drums for a while for the hell of it. Winded me out for a while but fun like none other :) |
