If you check archive.org in like a week, you'll probably be able to find it there.

Owned. The talent show for our school is coming up, and all the hardcore/metal bands were denied to play because they were 'loud' and all the blues/CR bands were accepted. I can't wait. :)

That sounds awesome, all the bands in my school are hardcore or metal. There are a couple actually good metal bands, but I've yet to hear anything good in the hardcore department. And we don't really have any blues or CR bands from what I can hear.

Led-ZeppelinIV 03-11-2006 04:03 PM

I'd really like to be in a blues band. My band's cool, though. All the members have really different tastes, so some of our songs end up sounding like Bodom and some end up sounding like Clapton.

After a few days of thinking about it I've come to the conclusion that my last post was very immature and an amazingly horrible way to go out. I apologize to everyone. My actions were out of frustration and anger it really wasn't the spam it was just me being stressed, depressed..etc (you know all that bipolar bull**** I go through every few months or so) I hope everyone will understand/forgive me I was an asshole.

What does everyone think is the moment that first kicked off the Classic Rock era? I'd have to go with the 1965 Newport Folk Festival when Bob Dylan first went electric and got run off the stage by an angry crowd. What do you guys think?

Edit: '70 < '69 < '68 < '67 >'66 >'65 ;)

Lunch 03-11-2006 06:39 PM

1967 is usually my favorite year too, but since I've been becoming more of a prog-whore the early 70's have been coming up strong.

For the moment that kicked off the classic rock era I'd have to say the whole Beatles thing.

MBS 03-11-2006 06:42 PM

Welcome back, Schyma. :)

The thing that kicked off the whole CR thing: The Beatles going on the Ed Sullivan show.

jpj 03-11-2006 06:45 PM

Yea, I think The Beatles were probably the first of the bands that would one day be called classic rock. Dylan was around a little bit before them, but he was playing folk then.

Scuba_Steve 03-11-2006 06:48 PM

I've got an album by this band called shikasta that I though you guys might want to check out, but how will I go about getting you guys the download link?

Shikasta is a newer semi-local band (a few cities over from me) and I've loved them ever since I saw their video on tv. Although they are a VERY new band, they play something that I would describe as sounding alot like CR, but with a heavier side. (Drums are VERY pronounced, and the use of newer equipment obviously gives a more modern distortion to the guitars) but none the less, it's an awesome album if anyone would like it.

Edit: I just realized this, but they sound a bit like the MC5

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 03-11-2006 06:50 PM

I wouldn't consider early Beatles Classic Rock though not until Rubber Soul which I think was influenced by Dylan going electric.

Right click the file, click add to archive, then upload it using YSI.

Lunch 03-11-2006 06:54 PM

Possibly, but the Beatles and Beatlemania sparked the whole British invasion, so groups like the Rolling Stones, the Kinks, Animals, Who, etc. all became big names in rock music, which we now call classic rock. I think Dylan going electric was equally as important and influential to classic rock as the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show, but the Beatles got there first.

Watching this Beatles Anthology is pretty cool. I'm on the part where they're discussing LSD. Which brings me to my next point: me and my guitarist friend who I'm basically living with next year are going to try it. If not now, then next fall.

Yea that sounds about right.

Thanks.

I'd say Elvis started it. Not really Classic Rock in sound but he had the whole attitude down and he started the wild flocks of fans. So I think he started the whole persona and publicity.
I wouldn't consider early Beatles Classic Rock though not until Rubber Soul which I think was influenced by Dylan going electric.
Welcome back dude. And yeah, that's actually exactly what I was thinking. Word for word almost. In the Anthology, they talk about how heavy Dylan was influencing them during those years. So I'd say the first real classic rock moment was when Dylan released Like a Rolling Stone and it became a hit. Nobody had 6+ minute songs back then. And the vicious songwriting was new to radio songs too. And then add the whole electric and revolutionary sounding thing and it really spawned classic rock. I guess you could argue Bringing It All Back Home was the start because that was the first electric Dylan, but it didn't have a popular single on it such as Like A Rolling Stone. But you can certainly make a case for The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who or any number of different bands for having started classic rock.

That part in the Anthology about them describing LSD is my favorite part in the book. It's just awesome. The "wicked dentist" who spiked their coffee with LSD. The description of that experience are awesome. I'd consider doing LSD eventually, but definitely not before I'm in college.

I am finding myself saying that alot lately. We really only have two good bands at my school, a bunch of freshmen that play Rush-inspired rock, and three kids that do prog (absolutely incredible). How's the harmonica going, robo?

I would love to be in a blues band. Originaly thats what my band started out being a year ago, a blues based rock and alternative project. But since one of the guitarists was replaced (im the other one), the entire band but me is on that G3, all technical, Satriani shred stuff. It's pretty cool but it doesnt interest me. I'm becoming the oddball of musical tastes in my band.
How's the harmonica going, robo?
Not bad but I haven't been playing all that much lately. Such a fun small instrument to play though. We could start a mx blues band with me and you on harmonica and bus on guitar. Except dual harmonicas sound amazingly bad. It'd be awesome to play harmonica in a jam blues band though.

Actually I'm going to go pick up my harmonica right now because I'm bored and not much is happening in here. How's your playing going?

Alright, I am trying to get a solo in the school jazz band with no luck

I never seem to have a harmonica around when people are jamming in blues, just a trombone

Busting out the old account.

Ha. A harmonica might be a little more useful for blues. But you could always jam on the trombone to the blues like the Blues Brothers. I love the Blues Brothers.

I was just jamming along with some Blues Travelers. Well kind of, Popper's sort of impossible to keep up with.

I've thought about trying LSD but then I heard that it stays in your system forever...which made me a little weary.

Yeah I wouldn't exactly say that the Beatles on Ed Sullivan started the Classic Rock era, mostly because, like Schyma said, I wouldn't call early Beatles Classic Rock. But that moment did start the British invasion, which I really think WAS what started the Classic Rock era. Mostly because with so many new bands coming into America, it really made the American Pop scene drift away from the Elvis era.

What is everyone's thoughts on Bryter Layter by Nick Drake?
I've thought about trying LSD but then I heard that it stays in your system forever...which made me a little weary.
That's not true...I'd say about 90% of all myths surrounding psychedelics are all bull****. LSD stays in you system for about 24 hours then completely disappears, flashbacks are 100% psychological which are triggered from very strong past experiences. (good or bad) I don't know why anyone would want acid anyway it's really watered down you'd be lucky if you took 3 hits and felt a good buzz. Mushrooms are where it's all at. I advise anyone curious about LSD to take a low shroom dosage instead. (which is really all you need to have an amazing experience)

Does anyone know of any Jazzy Folk?

BigTrav415 03-11-2006 10:27 PM

Well, today was an awesome day.

I'm in Wilmington right now, and this morning I got up around 10:30 and took a shower. Then we went to Kate's Pancake house for breakfast/lunch (I refuse to say brunch- damnit!), which is one of my favorite places to eat ever (Hurricane Omelette = sausage, ham, and bacon with peppers and other stuff in an omelette + homefries + biscuit + ketchup = :D ), then we took my dad's dog Crickett to the beach, where there were like 20 other dogs and we threw balls and stuff and they'd all fight over them  Then we came back to the house and played GTA: San Andreas for a bit, then me and my stepborther went to the guitar store (which was probably the low-point of my day actually, because there were no playable drums and the guys working there were old stuck-up jerks), then we went to the mall, where I debated with myself over buying Burnout Revenge or 2 shirts from Hot Topic (I know, I know...), but then I found that the XB version of Burnout was only $30, so I got all three :D Then we came home, played Burnout, ate Italian leftovers and a rotissery chicken for dinner, watched American Graffiti (awesome movie), played Burnout for a good three hours, and now here I am, posting in CR thread and seeing that Schyma is back :) What a great day.

Oh, and my shirts. Your envy++

I also rocked a crapload of CR on my iPod today, including all of Coda. I used to skip over LZ's mega-bluesy stuff because it started off so slow, man, what a mistake.

Leper 03-11-2006 10:32 PM

I'm probably going to be trying shrooms later this month, and if not then, hopefully this summer. I can't wait, it's going to be fun.

I just downloaded John Frusciante's album from the Daily Upload. Took me 3 hours . I'm waiting for 90 minutes to pass so I can download Jeff Buckley's Sketches...

Did I mention that it was the only one in the store? I found it by accident crammed between a Pink Floyd and a Beatles shirt. They had the generic Who ones with the bulls-eye, but I couldn't resist. In my size too! God wanted me to own this shirt

Other shirts I came close to buying.

Oh. My. God. Why God, Why didn't they have this shirt there? :( :(
