Hey, FP! Why don't you have any stars yet?

jamesr 01-07-2005 03:06 PM
I once boiled my strings, and one of them broke at the tip, so I wasted an hour that I could have been playing bass, so I stopped boiling my strings and I just buy new ones when they are worn out.
yeah boiling is a waste of time, new ones are only like 15 dollars every three months or so

I don't know why I don't either.

Spaceman Spiff 01-07-2005 03:08 PM

i don't even mind the sound of old strings.
Hey, FP! Why don't you have any stars yet?
I need to be here for 90 days...lame eh?

And to Russ- Its not much i suppose... My friends and family are p.issing me off today as well as the fact that I just saw one of the worst films ever and I have a terrible headache because of it...

Plus I have been neg repped twice (only 16 points, but still) and the f.uckers havent even left a name.

nisakss 01-07-2005 03:10 PM

I have fret buzzing problems, but it's weird....it think it's down to technique. Wheneever I play in the A string in the fifth fret (that'd be a D) with my index finger it's alright, but when I use my pinky finger to press down the string it frets....don't quite know why....it's not a presure issue.....maybe it's down to the area of the finger and how much it presses down....don't really know.

btw...and I don't mean to be rude.....what is a sXe?

jamesr 01-07-2005 03:12 PM
i don't even mind the sound of old strings.
I agree, plus a lot of bass players never change them.

Spaceman Spiff 01-07-2005 03:13 PM

sXe = straightedge
no drugs
no alcohol

nisakss 01-07-2005 03:13 PM
^ If the strings feel and sound dead, restring them. If they sound OK,then don't bother. If anything, I say just boil the strings it has now. Do you know how to boil strings? It's easy, I'll tell you anyway:

1-Take the strings off your bass.
2-Fill a pot about 3/4 with water.
3-Put your strings into the pot (make sure they're completely submerged).
4-Boil in HIGH for about 7-10 minutes.
5-Let the water simmer and cool down.
6-Once the water is lukewarm, empty out the pan and leave your strings on a towel to dry.
7-Once they've dried (about 15-20 minutes), re-string your bass.

Boiling them cleans the dirt, grime, grease, and sweat they've collected over time.

Lately I've been doing something I came up with...and so far it's given me great results. I take off the strings, and put in vinegar for about an hour or so, then I clean them with a towel and put them in the freezer.....they sound extremely crisp and bright afterwards....yet they don't feel dull like when you boil them.

Well, that's retarded, the 90 days thing. I know I've been here more than 90 days, at least. I'll keep repping you when I can until your 90 day reach. :thumb:

wonder if you just use vinegar to clean them if that would work. you know put some on a rag and wipe them while they are on the bass.

Don't they stink then??

Thanks, much appreciated.

Same here, as long as it sounds alright in an amp, that's really all that counts, IMHO.
sXe = straightedge

Oh I see....and is it something like a religion or more like a skin head stuff.

Anyhow, it seems like a cool way of life, although I personnally (and this is no apology to drugs or alcohol) feel than alcohol when used judiciosely and at the appropiate age, can be a good social enhacer......like you get together with your friends and dance, sing, etc., things that maybe you wouldn't do otherwise, and just relax.

Anyway, being clean is great. I really support what someone said about it being the only way of being yourself....it's like you can really show yourself as you are and not through a haze of smog or liquor.

voiceless one 01-07-2005 03:18 PM

Reminds me of us putting conkers in vinegar to make them harder! :)

brain_damage 01-07-2005 03:20 PM

Just for old times sake...

I have been on here 90 day and don't have them. I think mods have to give them to you.

Not if you put them in the freezer for a night. And maybe you're right and it'd be the same just using vinegar....but then again....low temperatures can affect the steel torsion or tension, or whatever, and generate new sounds. But it is just an urban myth within my head... :amaze:

Thunder Fingers 01-07-2005 03:21 PM

wow..alcohol judgment...

i dont drink, neither do i smoke.. i think thats the reason why i dont get asked to that many party's :p

Spaceman Spiff 01-07-2005 03:24 PM

straightedge is just a way some people choose to live.

not me, i like drugs and alcohol.
i'm very, extremely, unimaginable anti-social, but when i use these substances, i loosen up and am able to have a better time around people... well, i mean around people i don't know. when i'm with friends, i'm fine without that stuff, but we still do it because it's fun!

but that's just me and my opinions.

thelowsoundofbass 01-07-2005 04:09 PM

hello all, and what does straightedge mean?

sXe is just another word for no drugs or alcohol, started by Minor Threat...

It's not like Minor Threat meant it go work out like that. A bunch of kids felt left out so they decided to make a name for not doing drugs or alcohol. There is really no reason they need to name themself.

BassVirtuoso 01-07-2005 04:22 PM

It used to be that easy, but evidently there are a bunch of guidelines you have to follow now. So you can't be straight edge unless you follow them, which is ridiculous to me. Just be yourself.

thelowsoundofbass 01-07-2005 04:31 PM

ya i just dont drink or do drugs, i always volinteer for DD.
