Hey guys I found out today I might be playing my first real gig soon because one of my friends in a band need an opening act here is what I was thinking for my set list:

In The Flesh?
Like a Rolling Stone
House of the Rising Sun
Let it Be
Lone Black Line (original)
Wish You Were Here
Have You Ever Seen the Rain
Johnny B Goode
Masters of War
Tweeter and the Monkey Man
Folsom Prison Blues
All Along The Watchtower
Thus Passes the Glory of the World (original)
Imagine

Seafroggys 03-06-2006 09:00 PM

has anybody noticed when noobs come into this thread, there's like two or three at once (literally maybe an hour apart) then there's nobody new for like two or three days.

zabbit82 03-06-2006 09:01 PM

John Mayer Trio!

He needs to do more stuff like Try! I really enjoy that album. I like his cover of Hendrix's "Wait Untill Tomorrow." The first song on that rocks too.

Nice setlist. Does your band have a keyboard/organ player? Cause a lot of those songs have keyboard parts. I mean obviously you want to put your own touch on covers but I'm just wondering if you have a keyboardist.

And I don't like Mayer's voice but he's a very good guitar player. Try is great.

Yes, I have noticed it, in fact. They must plan it days in advance.

For an opening act, that may be a bit... much.

/is one of those noobs.

I posted sporatically here for a while and lurked for a while before having anything decent to post.

Also, about that setlist, I'd take off Imagine. It just seems like one of those tacky cover songs everybody does.

jpj 03-06-2006 09:04 PM

Yea, it is a lot of songs, but I think they're good choices. Even though, like robo said, a lot of them have piano/keyboard, they could still be played well with one person, if it's just you.

I especially like Folsom Prison Blues.

It's good to have another regular:thumb:

Plus you have a good taste in music and add to conversation. And it always helps to have people who know how to type. And you have Taj Mahal in your avatar (I think) and Taj Mahal completely owns.

Imagine could be good at the end as a kind of quiet and peaceful way to end things.

I like Tweeter the Monkey Man. Something tells me most people won't recognize that though...

I know a lot of people do Imagine but it, along with a bunch of the songs up there, its a song that has been important in my guitar playing and song writting through the years so its more of a tribute. I might drop it though, I have a feeling I'm gonna have to drop a few because I won't probally play for that long, but having a long set list to edit is better then getting up there and finding you don't have enough songs to fill your slot.

Also I really don't know how this will sound they guys said they would still let me do it but I actually have no band its just me and my guitar. If there was a piano part of something I tried to learn it on guitar. I don't know how it will turn out.

Some songs can be more powerful just with guitar. Like House of the Rising Sun for example. The Animals version is awesome with all the sweet organ and such, but Dylan's version of just him and his acoustic is much more powerful.

Scuba_Steve 03-06-2006 09:12 PM

If you want to play it, go ahead, as long as you are there to have fun and not jsut using it because "hey, it's a song people will know".

Also, yeah that's Taj Mahal in my avatar, and yes, he does rock.

I dream about doing a gig of covers some day. But I have to become passable at some musical instrument first :-/

I envy you pigonthewing82 :upset:

Krabsworth 03-06-2006 09:15 PM

MBS I haven't gotten any albums :(

Yeah I was really happy I got this gig, last week I wanted to play so bad I could taste it. I was even going to go up for one of those 2 or 3 song open mics at bars just because I wanted to play. You'll get there someday man well to be honest I'm not sure if I'm there yet but I thought it just might be fun to play out. It should be interesting I'm opening for a Punk band so I think what I'm playing will be far from what the people going were expecting to see.

I always thought you were a regular  Well I still like your avatar either way.
TRY! stuff
I've always been a fan of Mayer's playing, but something has been turning me off of the album. I'm sure I'll give it a long, well-deserved listen when the time is right.

I just got done watching Walk The Line. It was pretty cool seeing Johnny's earlier years.

Yeah, I just started posting in here yesterday :)

Walk the line was an amazing movie, and I really liked how it showed how he had to deal with his raather unsupportive father for most of his live.

Oh well MX, It's bedtime for me.

G'nite

pigonthewing82 03-06-2006 09:56 PM

I love Walk the Line, they do a great cover of It Ain't Me Babe

Krabsworth 03-06-2006 09:56 PM

Ahhh Pet Sounds is cool :)

No way. So did I. And now I'm listening to the soundtrack. Phoenix does a great impression.

For some reason Phoenix hates the album that was put out for the movie, he officially apologized for it in the Mojo magazine on Johnny Cash this month saying he hasn't sung or played guitar sense.

PinkFreud 03-06-2006 10:27 PM

Huh. I think he does great in it. In the movie he was out of tune a lot in the beginning but I think it was part of the movie. Haha.

I was just listening to "At Folsom Prison". I don't have the soundtrack though.

I think At Folsom Prison is one of the best live albums of all time. If anything just for the way Cash interacts with the crowd hes great.

I have a Johnny and June Carter Cash album where they do a cover of It Ain't Me Babe. It is pretty damn sweet. And I've never seen I Walk The Line.

Tonight my parents decided to root through my bedroom while I was at work....totally not cool.

Jacaranda 03-06-2006 10:44 PM

Meh, where is Leper when I need him.
Johnny Cash.

They find any pot?

And my neighbors are moving and they had some stuff they didn't want anymore, so they gave me Thick as a Brick on vinyl.
