I'm not talking about influencing bands, i'm talking about influencing people to get into classic rock. Who here didn't listen to AC/DC when they were 13?
Me. I still don't. Never liked them or really listened to them at all. They're the rare artist where I admit I've never really given them much of a chance. But yeah, I think everyone else in this thread used to listen to them. But that doesn't make them essential.

Okay, maybe PF didn't either. But PF, aren't you the one who went through a hardcore rap/ Simon and Garfunkel phrase in like 6th grade or something? I remember something like that.

Edit- Oh and I prefer Electric Ladyland by a lot to Are You Experienced. Amazing album. But Are You Experienced was first and just so revolutionary.

Scuba_Steve 03-05-2006 10:03 PM
Yeah you pretty much summed it all up. All the bands they've influenced suck. Just completely unoriginal, repetitive hard rock.

On T. Rex and Dire Straits- T. Rex is pretty good though I haven't listened to Electric Warrior enough. Dire Straits is awesome. I used to have a greatest hits but deleted it from my computer by accident. But neither is essential imo.
aye, I didn't think dire straits had much hope.

Also, about jimi hendrix
I think that electric ladyland is by far a better album than are you experienced. It opened up alot of interesting techniques in recording.

as cool as it is that they may be turning kids onto classic rock, those for the most part are the kids that get as far as the beatles, sabbath and led zeppelin and then decide they are musical gods.

PinkFreud 03-05-2006 10:05 PM

It is, but i would say that Are You Experienced? is more essential as an album. It was more revolutionary and influential (hypocrisy for Allen).

I really think that comes down more to opinion. They are both very nice albums, jsut different strokes for different folks.

Oh well, I'm off to bed, 'Nite

Krabsworth 03-05-2006 10:08 PM

I never had an AC/DC phase. I listened to Back In Black for a like a week and then never listened to it much again.

Jacaranda 03-05-2006 10:08 PM

Me neither, but a lot of my friends have.

The Beatles started it all for me, after Jane's Addiction got me into (more) music.

Agreed, but we're supposed to be talking about what's essential.

Seafroggys 03-05-2006 10:36 PM

i had a Beatles phase that never to this day died down, just made room for more gods....and I still think The Beatles are Gods.

robo2448 03-05-2006 11:01 PM

I'm downloading an album from Chris' site that sounds ridiculously good. Just go there and read the description. It's really long and detailed, excellent writeup. Anyways, he describes them as psychedelic heavy blues like Beck era Yardbirds with a pedal steel guitarist. And Pink Floyd stole their light show from these guys. Can't wait until this album finishes downloading.

The Beatles got me into classic rock. I always loved them. Rubber Soul was the first cd I ever bought, back when I was in like 4th grade or something. And the I really got into The Who after I saw the Simpson's episode with them. Seriously, I'm eternally greatful for that Simpson's episode. I went out and bought one of those crappy 20th century greatest hits cds for the Who the next day. It may have been a ridiculously bad and meager compilation, but it was enough to get me obsessed.

Led-ZeppelinIV 03-05-2006 11:19 PM

What is Chris' site?

And has anybody here ever heard of the band Stained Glass?

SadStairway 03-06-2006 12:01 AM

I downloaded the album Aurora by Stained Glass but havent listened yet.

Led-ZeppelinIV 03-06-2006 12:38 AM

Oh, it's great.

Jacaranda 03-06-2006 07:25 AM

Hey Zeppelin thanks for the Neil Young, don't bother with Live Rust this is good enough Neil Young for now. I gave all of my CD's of his to my friend about a month ago, so I only have Harvest on my computer.
I'll get out Abbey Road tonight.

PinkFreud 03-06-2006 01:12 PM

Wow. I think my favorite Dylan song is now "It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding), replacing "Lily, Rosemary, and The Jack Of Hearts." The lyrics are just so great. And he sings them with such conviction. I think it's a bit better when he focuses on more serious stuff, though it may seem obvious. To start some conversation, what are all of your favorite Dylan songs and lyrics?

Badmoon 03-06-2006 01:22 PM

hmmm, empty thread...

I have today off, Casmir Pulaski day I believe -- a holiday for the local Polish. But I'm not Polish (...:D).

PinkFreud 03-06-2006 01:24 PM

'Tis also a Sufjan Stevens song. Badmoon, do you listen to him? If you do, what are your thoughts?

classic_rock_queen17 03-06-2006 01:32 PM

Youre absolutely right!

To BOnzO, youre right. Classic Rock is coming back. Just the other day, I heard, "Cat's in the Cradle" within a rap song and I was amazed. I hate rap just as much as any other rock luvin' person (maybe even more), and, yes, I will listen to a song on BET just to hear ozzy in the backround or Ray Charles. I am a huge fan of classic rock. Hence, the name: Classic_Rock_Queen17. I'm seventeen as well, and the kids at my school are mostly black. I have nothing against black people, I just can't stand rap. And everyone at my school basically listen's to rap. It's sad, I know. I can barely stand even going to school. Most of my old friends, (emphasis on "OLD") now listen to rap. I'm not 'not' friends with them because of that, I just chose not to hand out with them anymore. You grow apart sooner or later. I can't believe how much rap has gotten so popular. It's almost sickening. I hate the videos, the lyrics, the 'beats'. It all SUCKS!!! Classic Rock is COMING BACK, AND I'M LOVING IT!!!

Badmoon 03-06-2006 01:36 PM

He's okay; Illinois doesn't appeal to me that much. "John Wayne Gacy" and some of the other songs are great, but he's kind of annyoing and his music never really goes where I want it to. And when Illinois came out, I was hoping for more songs regarding Depression-Era Chicago gangsters, but there were none :(

PinkFreud 03-06-2006 01:37 PM

I love "John Wayne Gacy Jr." I think sometimes when i listen to Illinois the songs start to blend together though. Pleasant to have on in the background.

I'd have to say that my favorite song of Dylan's is To Make You Feel My Love.

MBS 03-06-2006 01:54 PM

Hey guys; I sent out Paul McCartney's new album and the John Mayer Trio album. I think everyone got it. I'm uploading Christmas Eve and Other Stories by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, so expect that in maybe an hour/hour and a half.

MidnightRider 03-06-2006 02:09 PM

Freud, I think my favorite Dylan song is probably Tombstone Blues or Desolation Row.

I'm kind of late on this, but I've never liked AC/DC and I got into CR through Zeppelin. My dad just randomly bought Zep IV for me one day when he saw it on sale.

Today after school I found a cd case in the parking lot and being the good citizen that I am, I kept it. I got the greatest hits of Fleetwood Mac, Journey, Def Leopard, and Van Morrison. The others in it where all burned cds, so I have yet to see what they are.

robo2448 03-06-2006 02:10 PM

w00t. Try. I've been waiting a long time to hear this. Thanks a lot MBS. I'm downloading it now. I still have to listen to the album I mentioned last night that I got off Chris' site that sounds awesome, but I'm listening to Rubber Soul now. And when I'm in a Rubber Soul mood, it's impossible to change and listen to something else. So the new album will have to wait until Rubber Soul is done.

np: The Beatles- You Won't See Me

Favorite Dylan song is impossible for me. I was obsessed with Tombstone Blues for a while but right now it seems to be Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues. I've been on a Highway 61 Revisited binge for about 2 months now. It may be passing Blood on the Tracks as my favorite.

Losendos35 03-06-2006 02:28 PM

My dad got me influenced into classic rock, cause I remember that he played me, Boston's More than a Feeling, and from then I just kept playing songs out of his playslist. I just love music by the classic bands, aka Queen, Zeppelin, The Floyd, The who,

Long Live Classic Rock!!!

I'm gonna go with you. It's Alright Ma is breathtaking. I was left dumbfounded the first time I heard it. It's either that or Desolation Row.

MBS 03-06-2006 03:36 PM

Christmas Eve and Other Stories has been sent out.

Congratulations on being one of the few new users who jumped into the conversation instead of responding to the first post. What album is that song off of?

JonG 03-06-2006 04:00 PM

Thanks for Chaos & Creation in the Backyard.

Friends To Go is such a George song. It makes me shiver.

MBS 03-06-2006 04:06 PM

Apparently, Paul fought really hard with Nigel Godrich (sp?) to have that song on the album. I think it's a pretty good album, one of Paul's best.

That, and Riding to Vanity Fair
