I have a great idead for the first post.

"This is the Classic Rock Thread. Discuss Classic Rock." It's beautiful.

Schyma: I wish you would leave already, or just stop being such a whiny Nazi bitch.

PinkFreud 03-05-2006 05:25 PM

1 Buckethead 55
2 Gram Parsons 34
3 X 31
4 Jeff Buckley 16
4 The Dirtbombs 16
4 Rod Stewart 16
7 Mike Watt 15
7 The Beatles 15
9 Gordian Knot 14
10 Uncle Tupelo 13

Buckethead's so tits. I love him. His dvd comes out next week.

I agree that we should have an aim chat to talk about the first post but I really don't think it should be that big of a deal. It's only a post on a forum, after all.

Edit: Let's not fight, friends.

MidnightRider 03-05-2006 05:28 PM
Essential CR Artists:

Pink Floyd
The Beatles
The Rolling Stones
The Grateful Dead
The Allman Brothers Band
Led Zeppelin
The Who
ZZ Top
Cream
Deep Purple
Yes
Lynyrd Skynyrd
I would add Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Jefferson Airplane, Rush, CSNY, Fleetwood Mac, and Blue Oyster Cult.

Buckethead lights my soul on fire. Is the DVD just a concert or general weirdness or both?

Led-ZeppelinIV 03-05-2006 05:29 PM
I think they all suck. :pAh yes, and we were doing really good there for a bit. Remember the days when RocknotRoll would bitch at us for posting useless things? Last time I saw him he was posting more spam than anyone I've seen.

Since I enjoy on-topic conversation apparently more than others (<_<) (>_>) let's talk about some great moments you've had with your music, shall we? Something great happened with me last night as I walked home half intoxicated listening to Bob Dylan on a pitch black road leading into darkness. "Mr. Tambourine Man" came on with the gentle guitar coming in then I felt a huge shiver go up and down my spine then the vocals and lyrics took over and for those four long great minutes I had the most beautiful and spirtual conection with music that I've ever felt. It was so incredible, I completly forgot about everything I had just went through, the dark lonely road, my friends, the cops, the fact that I hadn't eaten something in 24 hours, just everything. Looking up I lost myself in the orange haze of pollution that covered the mid-night's moon. I felt almost like I could actualy be a part of it like a stray puzzle piece, like I could waunder through the vast blackness of space touching all the millions and billions of stars in between. I get the feeling like I'm starting to talk like Jack Kerouac here but I truely felt something amazing walking up that road. I don't believe in a god or anything of that sort but there was something about Dylan's words that sent me flying off to another place. (and where ever that place was it was sure better than my reality at the time) This was better than the time I was laying down on my roof-top, tripping, looking at a full moon, with Sigur Ros playing or the first time I tripped while I listening to "The Gnome". Has anyone felt such a insanly deep connection with some music that you'd remember that moment and song for the rest of your life?
Once my dad and I were going down this road in the middle of the woods, not talking at all. He was speeding like hell and that wierd interlude in Don't Fear the Reaper came on. For some reason that freaked the **** out of me and I just sat there thinking I was going to die or something.

Conversely, there was this time we were driving to a Pearl Jam concert in the middle of this huge desert. We were listening to some softer Pearl Jam and I was just looking out at the beautiful landscape. It was awesome.

Which is why I thought it should just be light-hearted and funny, and maybe just a quick briefing of CR and some good essential stuff for n00bies. I think the thread would benefit from having more educated n00bies who could become regs. But I'm sure we will have a long pointless debate over the whole thing.

My vote:

My intro + Robo's post since they've both already been worked on (hard by robo)

But that's just me.
I agree about Bob Dylan and Rush, I forgot about them both, I'll edit them in. Fleetwood Mac is pretty good, and I haven't heard much Neil Young but I know he's important. I don't really know about BAC, and Jefferson Aiplane. Who is CSNY?

Led-ZeppelinIV 03-05-2006 05:30 PM
I would add Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Jefferson Airplane, Rush, CSNY, Fleetwood Mac, and Blue Oyster Cult.
I like BOC, but I wouldn't really call them essential.

Lunch 03-05-2006 05:33 PM

Essential Artists: The Who. Everything else is secondary.
But really:
The Who, the Beatles, the Allman Brothers, the Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, Cream, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix (Experience), the Doors.

Essential albums:
The 'Oo - Live at Leeds
Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
The Beatles - Revolver
The Grateful Dead - American Beauty
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
Allman Brothers - Live at the Fillmore
Led Zeppelin I
Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland

Not-so-obvious choices*:
Love - Forever Changes
King Crimson - In the Court of...
Emerson Lake and Palmer - BSS
Yes - Close to the Edge
The Doors - S/t
Cream - Wheels of Fire

*These are all easily debatable, but I tuink it would be nice to have some of the not huge CR albums (LZ IV, Dark Side) represented. My intention was to get some great albums from separate genres of CR (prog, psych, blues-rock).

JonG 03-05-2006 05:34 PM

First post:

Don't talk about AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Stairway to Heaven backwards.

MidnightRider 03-05-2006 05:35 PM
I like BOC, but I wouldn't really call them essential.
Yeah, that was just my fanboyism shining through.

Isn't he amazalotronic? I made the word up to describe his awesomeness. The dvd is called "Secret Recipe." Two discs. The first is like a background on him with home footage and stuff. The second disc is 2 full concerts. For like, 14 bucks on Amazon. I'm so excited.

jpj 03-05-2006 05:37 PM
Who is CSNY?
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Where have you been?

I don't think you could really call BOC essential, and although Airplane is awesome, I don't think I'd necessarily call them essential either. But I don't know, Surrealistic Pillow is probably the best representation of the San Francisco psych scene.

He's not only amazalotronic, he's like completely psychofabodelic.
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Where have you been?
Anywhere but here! lololol

/schyma being annoying

Anyway, I'm fine with the first post being pretty much anything, but preferably

a) Robo's informative post

b) A one-liner like "Don't talk about AC/DC, LZ, or Stairway backwards

As long as my song is included :p :p :p

Lunch 03-05-2006 06:27 PM

Is anyone up for a chat tonight, probably to discuss these essential albums/artists or something? I think Robo mentioned it, and I would be in if you guys wanted to.

Important point: A new thread might not even be necessary. The reason the R&M Community thread was closed and restarted was because the thread was lagging because of the size. If this thread doesn't lag for awhile, it will stay open for a long time. I think the old Guitar Stronghold had like 80,000 posts at one point.

BigTrav415 03-05-2006 06:30 PM

I've been in the chatroom for a while, just ManRider and me, and he just left. I'm lonely :'( :'( :'(

Yeah, please come people. We'll have us a bitchin' time.

jpj 03-05-2006 06:34 PM

I'd join, but AIM doesn't work on this computer.

Badmoon 03-05-2006 07:08 PM

Are these essential artists listed by their popularity in the thread? I would hope so.

Therefore,
Fleetwood Mac
would play no part in the essential artists of the CR thread.

...check out my uncle tupelo thread

classicrockman 03-05-2006 07:16 PM

My essential classic rock albums:

Cream - Disreali Gears
Deep Purple - Machine Head
Eric Clapton - Slowhand
Jethro Tull - Aqualung
Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experinced
Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland
King Crimson - In The Court Of The Crimson King
Led Zeppelin - II
Led Zeppelin - Physical Grafitti
Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Queen - II
Rush - Fly By Night
Stevie Ray Vaughn - Texas Flood
The Beatles - Rubber Soul
The Beatles - White Album
Yes - Fragile

robo2448 03-05-2006 07:19 PM

I'll join the chat as soon as my AIM decides it wants to stop fucking up. Which better be soon because I really need to talk to a friend about something. But yeah, I'll edit my essentials into this post. I don't agree with Fleetwood Mac because, to my knowledge, nobody in this thread is a big fan of them.

And I really think the 1 album per artist rule would be a pretty good idea, though I'm not completely sure. What do you guys think?

Edit- My aim's not working at all:(

WelcomeToTheMachine 03-05-2006 07:25 PM

Someone invite me.

Illmatic 03-05-2006 07:28 PM

So James Jamerson is probably the best bassist ever.

PinkFreud 03-05-2006 07:37 PM

He could definitely make a good claim for it. I'd say it's between him, Larry Graham, and John Entwistle.

Edit: In terms of "Greatest" and not best as in technical best.

robo2448 03-05-2006 07:42 PM

Essential Artists
---------------

Black Sabbath
Bob Dylan
The Band
Bruce Springsteen
The Beach Boys
Cream and Clapton related bands
CCR
Frank Zappa
Jeff Beck
Jefferson Airplane
Jethro Tull
Jimi Hendrix
King Crimson
Led Zeppelin
Neil Young
Pink Floyd
Queen
Simon and Garfunkel
Sly and the Family Stone
Allmans
Beatles (including solo careers)
Doors
Dead
Kinks
Stones
VU
Traffic
The Who

I think that's a pretty good list. Lots of bands but not overly detailed. I put (?) next to debatle choices.

PinkFreud 03-05-2006 07:48 PM

I'd question Spirit, PBBB, QMS, and Nick Drake. But that's just me.

Jacaranda 03-05-2006 07:49 PM
/Essential Artists
I don't think a lot of those bands are essential, which means a need. I would not call Love, Nick Drake, QMS, SRV, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Traffic, or even Yes essential CR. Essential for me would be Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, Who, Dead and Pink Floyd. Those are essential, everything else isn't. I mean if we make a list like that why don't we just call it the "Every Classic Rock Artist."
SRV? I would not consider him classic rock, or good.

Meh anyone watching the Oscars? Dolly Parton just sang a really bad song, I've never really liked her.

I'm feeling awful grumpy tonight
You have Revolver a 4.5

np: Dark Star(31 minutes)
Why is that funny!?
I'll send you both if I can bitch about Last.FM

Hm, you can bitch all you want, I'm just saying it won't stop me.
Omg. That must be fucking scary.
I don't understand why anytime I say I'm mad someone says something like that.
I was looking back at the old CR Poll the Stones got shafted big time, ousted in the second round, then in the wild card.

robo2448 03-05-2006 08:02 PM

SRV's out. I'm not a big fan of Stevie either, but he seems pretty essential. But more essential to blues than classic rock. Same thing with PBBB I guess. Love, Spirit, QMS, Booker T, and I think I'll take the Byrds out too. I'm not sure about Nick Drake. He only had 3 albums, but it's pretty awesome stuff. But awesome doesn't make it essential so I guess he's out too. Traffic is definitely staying. Don't try that on me.

What do you guys think about Yes being on that list? Personally, I think they should probably stay but I realize quite a few of you dislike them. And what about Marley? I don't think he can be considered "classic rock" so I might delete him too. I'm also the only Roy fan so I might delete him if anyone opposes to him being on the list.

List edited.

Jacaranda 03-05-2006 08:03 PM

You're seriously saying they are an essential Classic Rock band on the same level as the Beatles and Pink Floyd?

Glitterati 03-05-2006 08:04 PM

I'm sorry Schyma, but I gotta agree you're being a little whiny lately. When you're not saying "omfg dunt spam gaiz", you're bragging to us about how stoned you got on the weekend.
I listened to Bull of the Woods the other day. Good stuff. Not anything really amazing, but I like the Elevators. Catchy garage psychedelia. Roky Erickson has a great voice.

And yeah the Wilburys are awesome. I listened to both their cds this week. Volume 1 is superior, but Volume 3 is very solid as well.

np: The Underdogs- The Garden of Eden
I really like The Traveling Wilburys, I think they had a great combination of singers and songwriters.

'Poon: What's wrong with Fleetwood Mac? :(

On topic: I bought an awesome Pink Floyd The Wall shirt today.
