Hell yea. I love soccer. I played up until senior year of high school.
A lot of people find it boring to watch on TV, but being at the games is mad fun. I've been to the MLS All Star game when it was at RFK, and I was at the game when D.C. United player Newcastle from the Premier League. |
That's awesome, man. I was a ball boy for the Womens World Cup
Hell yea. I love soccer. I played up until senior year of high school.
I was injured sophomore year and had to resign during junior year due to the fact I felt like I was performing crappily, and my school load was immense (6 APs) |

I didn't play organized soccer....but I grew up in America. In America, the kids that play soccer are the kids who can't play other sports. |
That's not true at all. Soccer players are extremely athletic.

Maybe in the young crappy leagues, but by late middle school and high school you have to be really good and athletic. |
That's not true at all. Soccer players are extremely athletic.
NP: Frank Zappa - Dirty Love
In America, almost all of our best athletes move on to football, basketball, and baseball. The lesser athletes stick with soccer. In the rest of the world, it's different. |

Yea but some people aren't black, and they play soccer. |

No, that's not true at all. |

You're trying to tell me baseball players are better athletes then soccer players?
|
No, that's not true at all.
Well, I've phrased it wrong. Most of the kids who play soccer are definitely as athletic as baseball, basketball, and football players, they're just less skilled. |
 You've got a really bad perception of soccer. How are they less skilled?
|
Well, I've phrased it wrong.
Most of the kids who play soccer are definitely as athletic as baseball, basketball, and football players, they're just less skilled.
A certain level of skill is definitely required to dribble, pass, and shoot a soccer ball(amongst various other things soccer players do) correctly. Certainly more skill in that than in being an offensive linemen. Just because soccer isn't very popular in America doesn't mean it's for talentless people that don't have skills in anything else. |

I should ysi a small soccer video.
A certain level of skill is definitely required to dribble, bass, and shoot a soccer ball correctly. For the record, an offensive lineman has to know his entire team's playbook, be able to recognize blitzes, call out blocking assignments, and move laterally and backwards without losing any strength. There's more skill and athleticsm required out of your average offensive lineman than you might think. |
Just like there's more skill in kicking a ball than you might think. Knowing a playbook isn't necessarily skill, it's just memory.

They don't get time to set them up either, they have to make them happen right when the opportunity is there or else they lose that chance. That makes them more skilled in my book. Doing something you have time to set up is easier to execute than doing something right when the opportunity is there. |
Soccer players have plays and formations they have to know forwards and backwards. They have to constantly run, and the only time they get to catch their breath is when the ball goes out of bounds. Also, only 3 subs are allowed a game, and once you are subbed out you can't come back in. So players don't get subbed in and out like in other sports.
|
I like how you saw the first thing I said and apparently ignored the best.
Even so, you still haven't pointed out how soccer requires more skill than baseball, bball, football, etc. |
It is difficult to see oppurtunites for plays in soccer, because you are constantly on the move and under pressure. It's harder to see open players in soccer than in basketball because of the greater spacing. It's harder to kick a ball accuratly than to throw a ball accuratly. Also in soccer there is no safeguard from the defense, like in basketball where you can hold on to the ball and be protected from getting it stolen.

That's athleticism, and I have conceded that already. |
Soccer is the quickest paced game of any you listed. Thinking on your toes requires the highest degree of skill.

So you feel they are athletic, but not skilled? |

At least your country is half decent at it :upset: |

Ever tried playing quarterback in football? You make it sound as if it's easy. In basketball, you can only hold on to the ball for five seconds before the ref gives the ball back to the other team. Much like in soccer, a point guard in basketball has to call plays on the fly and see plays two or three moments ahead of time. The smaller space in basketball is a double-edged sword; in soccer, I've seen players dump the ball off downfield so that a faster player on their team can get to it before a defender, but in basketball you can't do that because there's less space for seperation from the defender. Also, in basketball, every player has to carry his own weight on both ends; in soccer, the strikers pretty much only have to play on offense and the fullbacks and sweepers only have to play on defense. Soccer is a difficult sport, but most of that difficulty is on the physical end. From what I've seen, soccer players get by on raw athleticism more than in any other sport (basketball comes close, but in basketball you need to be able to hit a J). |
In my mind, all of the sports we are discussing require the same amount of skill, talent, and athleticism.
|

Not so. In baseball and golf, most of the athletes really aren't that athletic, so they need more skill than anyone. In my mind, those are the most difficult, from a skill standpoint, sports out there. |
