Did anybody else see Derek Trucks on Conan? He's awesome. So awesome that I'm going to listen to some ABB this week.
NP: Band of Gypsies - Power Of Love |
Gah I love Conan but I always forget to watch.:(
|
I didn't see him but if he really IS touring in Clapton's band this year then it looks like im dropping another 90 to go see him again. Whoo!
|
Does anyone have any info on this tour? If he comes to Toronto, I'm there. I'm ready to spend the money.
|
I just bought the album Spartacus by Triumvirat. They are a 70's prog band very similar to ELP, usually driven by keyboards but with overall great musicianship. I'm only on the third track, but so far this album is outstanding.
|
What does everyone think of Sly & The Family Stone? Classic funk I'm getting into lately.
|
Stand is amazing.
|
I heard about Trucks touring with Clapton in like late October. So kind of old news for me but still awesome. I think the European leg of the tour is about to start.
Sly Stone rules. I have Stand and There's a Riot Goin' On. Both are great. After listening to Low Spark of the High Heeled Boys a couple times, I've concluded that it's the only album Traffic ever made that was a real group effort. The early albums were kind of divided into Winwood songs and Mason songs and so they had distinct variation. And then John Barleycorn Must Die is pretty Winwood dominated. But Low Spark of the High Heeled Boys seems to be a really even and group effort. Capaldi sings 2 songs, adds some nice percussion, and writes great lyrics. Winwood's singing and keyboard playing are of course great, but he also shines more on guitar here. And Wood's flute and saxaphone are prominent in every song. The percussion on this album is so awesome too with Reebop, Capaldi, and Gordon. I don't know if this is my favorite Traffic album, but I think it's the most balanced group effort? Anyone else agree with this? np: 13th Floor Elevators- Livin' On |
Meh anyone want Round About Midnight by Miles Davis?
Yes, please and thank you. Did you like it?
Oh ok. So then I've heard that The Who and The Kinks could be described as proto-punk, is that accurate?
I've heard the Doors called "proto-punk" a couple of times even by Allmusic.com. I guess it'd have to be in part of Jim Morrison's crazy stage presense because they don't sound at all like Punk. I just went through the craziest **** ever lastnight. One of my friends had to go to his dad's leaving several other friends and me with no place to chill (drink/smoke/play hacky sack and video games) when my friend left, his mom ended up getting us Old English 40's for each person but with no place to drink. So we ended up going to an abandoned house's backyard right next door to my friend's house. We got wasted there chilled, hung out, for an hour or two and out of the blue here comes a light runing towards us. So we ran to jump over the fence and as soon my head peers over the top of the gate what do I see but a cop take down my one of best friends. The cop with light running with the light quickly tells me to get the **** down and not to move. At this point I thought I was 100% ****ed because I had some bud and a pipe on me, I was really wasted and I was trespassing. I laid down and foolishly told the cop I was sorry and as soon as I said that I hear a crash from behind the fence. The cop then jumped over the fence leaving me with a perfect chance to get the hell out of there and very quickly I did. So I run my *** off and jump over at least 8 fences and curled up in a bush to wait there til' everything died down. I stayed there for an hour looking up though the dark branches woundering what the hell will happen to them and how the **** would I get home. When I got out of the bush I tried to go for my backpack which was right next to my friend's house and when I got there who do I see in my friend's driveway but my good ol' mom smoking a cancer. I ended having to jump over a few fences to get my backpack because I didn't want to get seen by my mom. When I got it, I quickly went the long way home to avoid the roads though neighbourhoods I'm not a damn bit familer with and dark roads that seemingly lead to nowhere. The only thing that kept me from being insane was the fact that had my music with me and that sure calmed me down. I had to walk 5 miles (yes, 5 miles) to get to my house and when I got there all the lights were on. So I stayed curled up right next to my window for I don't even know how long but eventually she turned them all out which gave me my chance of getting in and so I crept in without a sound (still a little bit drunk), I've never been so quiet! I get in my room lock the door and get a well deserved nights rest and now here I am. I cannot believe I haven't gotten in any trouble yet! However, I have no clue what will happen to my friends nor do I know why my mom showed up when she did. I could still be in a-lot of trouble and I still have to give one hell of an explanation, so wish this man good luck. Update: I had to talk with my dad a minute ago and I pulled off the greatest explanation I've ever told and he believed 100% of it. Should I be proud?.....but seriously that was an un-believable explanation and believe me I've had to pull off some pretty incredible lies before but this takes the cake. The future is looking pretty good right now but my friends on the other hand..... |
At least you got away. Man, that's pretty crazy.
|
Ugh stupid pigs.
Yeah I really like Round About Midnight. |
That's a pretty awesome story. Nice getaway :thumb: I could never sneak into my house, all the doors that lead into the house have little "beep-beep-beep"s when they open, even if the alarm's not on, which is never. That had to be a memorable experience though, staggering half-drunk down a dark street listening to good music.
I'm trying to decide what to buy next. I'm going to Raliegh (capital of NC) today to get some hiking boots for when I go to Philmont this summer, and I'll probably go to a CD store at some point. I'm thinking about some Who, Dead, or some non-CR stuff like Porcupine Wing that I've heard are really good. Suggestions? |
Porcupine Wing?
|
that crazy Schyma, glad you got away man.
So i finally found Welcome Back My Friends.... and its pretty good so far, even though im only one the second track. NP - ELP - Jerusleum (SP?) |

I have it and it's not really my thing but I've heard that this is their easiest to get into. |

Yeah, I was thinking about the album Deadwing and kind of did a Freudian Slip there... So yeah, I'll probably get that. I've heard it was good too. |
Ugh. Check out Clapton's touring band. Looks like he's bringing back-up singers. That's never a good sign. I hope he's not reverting to his 1990's style with all the back-up singers and hardly any solos. That would anger me. I'm interested to see hiim though. Looks like he has Derek Trucks AND Doyle Bramhall III still touring with him. And he dropped Steve Gadd for Steve Jordan. I'm not so happy about that but we will see.
|
I've heard good things about Porcupine Tree. But I'd have to listen to some samples or something before I buy their stuff. I've got a lot of other stuff to check out first.
Hey Trav, the UNC story you shared yesterday made the news this morning. Schyma that's a pretty crazy story. Can't say I've ever had an experience like that. Is Round About Midnight one of Miles earlier albums or one of his fusiony ones? np: 13th Floor Elevators- Right Track Now Edit- Ugh I hate Clapton with back up singers. That just doesn't work for him. |
I've only heard Lightbulb Sun by Porcupine Tree.. It's good.
|
Robo you should get a Canned Heat avatar to match you Canned Heat location and usertitle.
Haha, see the cops in Canada don't really care about that stuff. I was at a beach party that th cops crashed once, I was taking a hit from a pipe and all the cops did was confiscate it and tell us to leave. It might change now seeing as we are a conservative country now. Edit-Robert Cray is opening for Clapton too. That's pretty awesome. |

It's the same Winwood/Capaldi compositional tag-team that did John Barleycorn Must Die mostly. I don't know if Traffic ever had a true album where the whole band contributed evenly. It was always either Mason and/or Winwood dominating it (I personally like it like that). Traffic was probably my favorite classic rock group besides anything Hendrix touched. |
Actually Low Spark did have a constant band:
Steve Winwood- Lead vocals, guitar, keyboards Chris Wood- Sax and flute Jim Capaldi- Lead vocals and Percussion Rick Grech- Bass and Violin Jim Gordon- Drums Reebop Kwaku Baah- Percussion It wasn't just the trio plus 3 session guys, Grech, Gordon, and Reebop were all members of the band and I think they all contributed to make the album sound more like a group effort than others which sound like they were dominated by Mason and/or Winwood. But yeah, I agree with you about how the group conflicts kind of made the group more interesting and led to them changing their sound a few times. |

Fuck, Clapton with back-up singers is majorly annoying. If he plays like he did with Cream last year, then it should be a helluva concert, though. Has he posted dates yet? A few nights ago I heard the Live Cohen version of Halleluiah, and I can safely say its on par with Buckley's cover. Np: Leonard Cohen: Suzanne |
Only for the UK part of the tour. Apparently he's going to be touring for 2 years straight. Doesn't sound like fun. I'm upset that he replaced Steve Gadd though. They'd been playing together for a while and he's one of the best.
I don't like the original Hallelujah. I prefer the Buckley cover by far and after that, the Wainwright cover of Buckley's cover. Haha. |
so i bought Rick Wakeman - Revisited today, it has an awesome version of Eleanor Rigby on it, it reminds me a lot of that guy that Eleanor Rigby that posted here a couple weeks ago, with all the improv at the begening and middle parts, just with keyboard.
EDIT: oh yeah i didnt mention the books i got, i bought The Iliad and the Odyssey, The Works Of Jules Verne, and the Works Of H.G. Wells. |
Who the fuck cares if he has back up singers? He has DEREK TRUCKS! I'm pissed though because this summer he's only in Europe, so it's gonna be a long time before I have a chance to see him.
I didn't get to see him on Conan last night because I was really tired and fell asleep  |
Yeah, who can wait until the fall?
Are there any other good summer tours lining up that anyone knows of? |
Bob Dylans touring this year too, i think the spring though.

There are some uncredited guests who play on the album, and I believe Winwood, Wood, and Capaldi were the only members to play on all the songs. |

Have you heard any or seen any of the concerts where he has them? He starts playing stuff like "Wonderful Tonight" and plays totally uninspired. I might still go for Trucks but this is a big let down for me. |
