"The Glass Prison" is a great song. I find it kinda hard to listen to at first but now I really like it. It's good but I'm not sure if it belongs in the Dream Theater top 10.
Thats the song that got me into Dream Theater. Then I heard As I Am:)

GenuineImitation 04-22-2006 10:46 PM

The song that got me into DT was Pull Me Under. I then bought Train of Thought and was hooked for life.

Same here. That's why I still regard "Pull Me Under" as a good Dream Theater song. It got me into Dream Theater, so I have a good connection with that song.

Its one of my favorite DT songs for that reason. Sure there are better songs, but if it wasnt for PMU, I wouldnt know who they are.

heavy metal kid 04-22-2006 11:38 PM

The first song i've heard from DT was Pull Me Under, but it didn't have an impact at first, then i've heard Home by the time the crazy outro finished i was downloading the song, i think that was the song that got me into DT.

Crysiss 04-22-2006 11:42 PM

Pull Me Under is an awesome song as well.

Mother 04-22-2006 11:50 PM

Train of Thought and Octavarium are heavy and fast.

Metropolis pt. II: Scenes from a Memory and Images and Words are the best.( they aren't too heavy)

Mother 04-22-2006 11:59 PM

Thanks

RideTheSpiral 04-23-2006 01:03 AM

Scenes From a Memory is way heavier than Octavarium...

heavy metal kid 04-23-2006 01:37 AM
Scenes From a Memory is way heavier than Octavarium...
well, the heaviest song in SFAM is heavier than the heaviest on Octavarium, but some of the songs on SFAM are softer than 8V like TSCO,Regression and OLT.

Jev 04-23-2006 08:40 AM

What's heavier than Panic Attack?

Clunge 04-23-2006 08:53 AM

The start of Honor Thy Father.

Clunge 04-23-2006 08:55 AM

Scrap that, I didn't read the posts before.
What's heavier than Panic Attack?
Dance of Eternity, Home and Beyond This Life.

ghettoeddo 04-23-2006 01:36 PM

beyond thsi life trumps panic attack by far imo. it's one of the few songs i know where it's written in an inverse format. ie: the chorus is "softer" than the verses and stuff.
i really dont like panic attack too much. i mcuh prefer never enough.

it looks liek most people are a fan of DT's heavier stuff on these forums. i personally love a lot of their mellower ballads and whatnot.

Shattered_Future 04-23-2006 02:37 PM

I think the first song I heard by Dream Theater was the first part of Acid Rain. Which, ironically enough, wasn't by Dream Theater...:p

I think the first whole song I heard was Home. Didn't think much of it...a few years later, I found 6DOIT at my library, and took it home and burned it. I think it was The Glass Prison that did it.

Lord Abortion 04-23-2006 03:46 PM

Hahaha, Beyond this life is ALOT better than Panic attack.

As for first song, I bought I&W without having heard the band before, and was completely blown away simply by the start of Pull me under...

pep 04-23-2006 04:24 PM

The first song I heard was Home, but I didnt pay enough attention, then Pull me Under did the job of getting me into DT.

I enjoy the heavy stuff and the mellower stuff equally.

I definitely like their heavier stuff better. The mellow stuff I find to be a little cheesy, but they have some good ballads, too.

Lord Abortion 04-23-2006 04:53 PM

I personally prefer the ballads, but maybe that's just me.

temporary 04-23-2006 05:02 PM

The songs that got me into DT were The Glass Prison and Under a Glass Moon (I thought that had some obsession with glass or something.) I remember sitting in this hotel room, just listening to all of The Glass Prison with my jaw hanging open. Then I downloaded Learning to Live, and soon afterwords bought Images and Words. The rest is history...

ghettoeddo 04-23-2006 06:44 PM
I personally prefer the ballads, but maybe that's just me.
i love their ballads. lovelovelove.
but i love their other works as well. i think they're an all-around all-star power quintet :]

where did it say the DVD was gonna be released in september? i checked theri main site, but nothing. i kinda want evidence so i dont get high hopes, which is also an awesome song by floyd. i digress.

Lord of Sword 04-23-2006 07:34 PM

Mike said on his forums something about him editing the DVD and that it should be out by late summer. The thread's stickied at mikeportnoy.com still I think.

As for the first DT song I heard, probably all of Scene 2 from SFAM - Overture 1928 and Strange Deja Vu. There were a couple of downloadable MP3s on progarchives.com, and after hearing those songs, along with a few others like the Mirror and SoC, I went out and bought I&W.

Captain Quentin 04-23-2006 09:53 PM

the first DT song i heard was the whole train of thought album, i instantly loved it. i then bought I&W, which was a HUGE difference to ToT and took a while to grow on me

Jev 04-24-2006 01:05 AM

First DT song I ever heard was either Glass Prison or SOC. Both impressed the hell out of me and when I got I&W I instantly fell in love with Take The Time and the rest of the album grew on me.

Mr_Bounce 04-24-2006 01:45 AM

1st song for me was Space Dye Vest, just amazing.

Lord Abortion 04-24-2006 09:19 AM

It took me a long time to get into Take the time, mainly due to the intro...

red barchetta 04-24-2006 11:01 AM

first Dt song i heard was The mirror, and i didnt really like it that much. a few weeks later, i heard Metropolis, Take The time and Pull Me Under and started to love them.

But the Dt song that had the most impact on me was Blind faith.

Clunge 04-24-2006 11:31 AM

My mate sent me Honor Thy Father about a year and a half ago and I hated it. It really just sounded rubbish to me (My tastes were different).

He then sent me Never Enough after 8V came out and it really pulled me in. I got 8V and then went from there.

heavy metal kid 04-24-2006 02:19 PM
It took me a long time to get into Take the time, mainly due to the intro...
That song is freaking sweet, one of my favorites on I&W, but the intro("Just let me catch my breath"... part) it's so 90's and gay.

Lord Abortion 04-24-2006 02:20 PM

My thoughts exactly

temporary 04-24-2006 02:27 PM

Yeah, that kinda turned me off from it the first time I heard it, but as I kept listening I really loved it. Especially those syncronized keys and guitar...

badtaste 04-24-2006 09:01 PM

Whoa, I just heard 'A Change of Seasons' on the radio. 23 minutes of pure joy.

Lionheart1827 04-24-2006 09:11 PM
But the Dt song that had the most impact on me was Blind faith.
Ah we meet again Red.

I LOVE THAT SONG! I remember when I got 6DOIT, I listened through it once and not one song stood out. Then a month later I listened to it again, and I noticed Blind Faith stood out so much. It has so much ambience to it, and I love the synth effects Jordan uses, especially in the beginning. Great song.

My first DT song was Erotomania and Metropolis part 1. The intro to Metropolis I actually heard before I even knew about DT because they played it during a b-ball game.:thumb:

No gay guys I know talk like that.

That's cool.
A Change of Seasons is the last DT song I'd expect to hear on the radio...

Edit: Oh, I see now, Australian radio... That's cool; we always play the best over here

Darkness 04-24-2006 09:54 PM

Holy crap! On the radio?!

Jev 04-25-2006 01:07 AM

What radio stations this?
It sounds awesome.
