You do realise the last band they covered was Pink Floyd?
You do realise the last band they covered was Pink Floyd?
Yeah, they named it "Octavarium." :p EDIT: What I meant was more of a subtle and dynamic use of the same skills that Dream Theater values: Rush has all the odd time, the solos, the instrumental skill DT has but they do it in less obvious ways. Pink Floyd does not make anywhere near the same kind of music DT does. |
I was reffering to you saying "I think they could benefit from covering a group that actually requires subtlety and dynamics instead of "BRAAWR! METAL!" -type groups all of the time."
BTW, check out this goodies I've just come across on Google video: Octavarium live in Chilie: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8560508862008529120&q=dream+theater and a little clip of Money in London: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3162741817971571768&q=dream+theater |
That version of Money wasn't that bad...Portnoy looks laughably relaxed behind the kit, which is only to be expected, really. I think that Dream Theater covering Tool would be interesting, but wouldn't be that good an idea. Assuming they fitted in Jordan Rudess, then I don't really think his style would suit covers of Tool. Obviously he could do it if he wanted to (all of the band could), but I'd far rather see them try another band rather than Tool, pretty much. Seeing them do Rush would be pretty neat.
I still hold out for Rush or Yes. Both seem to have left the biggest imprint on the band, and would be interesting to see them tackle. Plus, it would definitly be a challenge for them. Seeing them to some King Crimson wouldn't be to bad, either. |
OMFG!!
Got a DVD player last week and my mate is letting me borrow Live at Budokan. I've had the CD for about a while, but it seems so much better to see the band in action. I didnt realise it made that much difference. Now im probably going to spend all my money buying all the other DVDs. Ah well, its probably worth it. Got to see them live aswell sometime if they come near enough. |
Apparently the album they covered was.... Deep Purple - Made in Japan (the live album):
Highway Star Child In Time Smoke On The Water The Mule Strange kind Of Woman Lazy Space Truckin' Very cool if you ask me, I can't wait to hear it, especially hearing LaBrie sing Child in Time. |
YES!!1! March 17 they're coming to Minneapolis!
I will be SURE to get tickets for that! :D |

They covered it last night in Tokyo. |
They covered it last night in Tokyo.
Wow! That's awesome. I freakin' love Deep Purple and have always wanted to see DT cover them. I liked their cover of "Perfect Strangers." |
How would you do that in an all seated gig? I'm pretty sure the NY show is gonna be sold out.
Well apparently the Astoria sold out too but there were seats empty. When people turned up for them we went "oh sorry, thought these were our seats" and moved to some other vacant ones. |
So are there going to be any more dates between Feb and Apr, since their last gig will be in NY?
|
there better be...*still watching the site like a stalker*

I soooooooooo want to go to a DT concert, but the closest they have ever came to New Brunswick was Toronto, 18 hours away, and I almost got my mom to let me go (it was the Gigantatour) but then she said no when I thought I had her lol. But someday I will see them...............someday

Next time run away from home to see them. |
Ok I have just recently got into DT, and right now my favourite songs are Panic Attack and Lie :D

I love In The Name Of God. BTW my band is learning As I Am for our first song that we can play together and maybe one day a cover song (if we do it good). But i havent learned the drum solo yet(if i ever do) and our guitarist hasnt learnt the solo(if he ever does). i thought it was relevant.

Looks like you both have some work to do. |
Mmm...indeed. But i think he'll eventually learn it and hopefully i can.:(

Them solos are a bitch though. They all just seem to be Petrucci and Portnoy trying to go as fast as they can. |
Yeh but they sound so good. Seeing Portnoy play anything makes it look so simple till i try to play it.

Especially SOC. |
Yeah i dont know how he came up with the starting beat for that song. Its just random hitting that blends in really well.

It's so complicated. Just remembering it is a challenge. |
Im getting the hang of As i Am. Its fun to play and when i learn(and my band) the whole song i can rub it in my friends face that we are better than them(even though we probably already are).SOC is actually our guitarists fav song.

Yeah, theres a lot of songs like that, The Dance of Eternity is a good example (the bit at the start that has the same beat as the middle of Metropolis). And the verses of These Walls are really cool. |

It would have been ludicrous to cover Pantera...I mean, pantera are just a bunce of no talent rednecks...and DT are Gods amongst men. |

I just don't like them...
