Oh my god someone is here.
***But has to go soon*** |
i'm here now.
nearly finished my music essay |
what can you write a music essay about? A band or something?
|
nah. i've been given a piece of music, and i've been told it's from the renaissance period.
now i need to give an essay explaining WHY it's from the renaissance period, using only musical reasons. Tell you what, shall i post my essay thus far and you can tell me what you think of it? |
I would have no idea what you would be going on about? :p
The Renaissance period? I haven't read sheet music for about 7-8 years, from when i used to play the recorder. Anything i play now is from tab |
I can read and play sheet music on bass.
if it has the note letter over the top of it |
well, i'll post it anyway :p
WHY IS PAVANA LACHRIMAE A RENAISSANCE PIECE? Pavana Lachrimae is a Renaissance piece for many reasons. The most obvious of these reasons is the date it was written 1615. However, there are various other reasons as to why Pavana Lachrimae is from the Renaissance period. One is that the piece was written for harpsichord. How can one tell that the piece is for harpsichord? Well, simply, because of the lack of dynamics and the limited range. The only other popular keyboard instrument was the organ which was not only capable of playing soft and loud, but had a far more dynamic range than the harpsichord. Out of all the keyboard instruments, harpsichord was the most popular during the Renaissance and Baroque eras. However, when the pianoforte came to common use within composing especially in the works of Mozart (who incidentally wrote his first few piano sonatas for harpsichord, but when he played on a piano, he preferred it and thusly wrote his keyboard sonatas for piano) the harpsichord was more or less abandoned. Due to this fact that keyboard pieces were only really written for harpsichord during the Baroque and Renaissance periods the piece must either be from the Renaissance or Baroque era. One of the greatest revolutionary concepts in musical history is the abandonment of modes in favour of keys and scales. This revolutionary concept was introduced in the beginning of the Baroque era. However, this piece is written in the Aeolian mode meaning that the piece is unlikely to have been written in the Baroque era. Therefore, the piece must have been written in the Renaissance period. There is, of course, evidence that one COULD use to say that this piece was from a later age such as the fact that many early piano sonatas used had a small range, and thusly could have been played on a harpsichord. For this reason, Beethovens Sonata No. 8 in C Minor, commonly known as the Pathetique, is sometimes called the first piano sonata as it used a range that would have made the piece impossible to play on a harpsichord. However, I believe I have given enough evidence to prove that this piece is from the Renaissance period. Other reasons include that the piece uses a falling fourth, and is divided into divisions, which I have not encountered elsewhere except for within this piece the first piece I have ever seen from the Renaissance period. |
