hmm good question. I dont think Lateralus would be the same without Justin.

Moses 04-17-2005 06:02 PM

All I know is that he had a more pounding type of tone, and he left the band because he wanted a more progressive style or somthing.

White Goodman 04-17-2005 06:05 PM

that's a good question. Honestly I think the current band would completely different. When Paul was there, the bass was more prominent, which is not a bad thing since I play bass, but in an album like Lateralus I don't think the bass needed to stand out as much.

Actually you can hear the bass really well in Lateralus. Just listen to Schism. The only thing is that Paul had a more pounding sound, while Justin's sound is a little bit more polished and clean.

hey, when the levee breaks aint bad (pulled eMOTIVE out of drawer)

Schism does has prominent bass. I guess i meant that songs on Undertow had more of a pounding sound, not prominent sound, because Tool is a band where the bass is well heard. Sorry for the mix-up.

The bass in the grudge stands out, same with schism.

Huber 04-17-2005 06:15 PM

How could you all go this long without mentioning the stand out bass in Lateralus?

Moses 04-17-2005 06:17 PM
How could you all go this long without mentioning the stand out bass in Lateralus?
Well the bass stands out in almost all of Tool.

Futuro 04-17-2005 06:18 PM

the bass playing on Ænima and lateralus were better IMO just listen to how fast he hammers in schism and in H.

Moses 04-17-2005 06:20 PM

He doesn't hammer he uses a pick.

He doesn't hammer he uses a pick. And I think you meant slap/pull.

Just IMO when I think standout bass on Lateralus, the title title track is second on the list, only to The Grudge.

White Goodman 04-17-2005 06:22 PM

My playing style is more like Paul's I guess. I am more of the hammer-type, no pick.

The triplet riff in Schism is a hammer on.

Futuro 04-17-2005 06:41 PM

there used to be a website were you could see him do the hammer ons and pull offs

Moses 04-17-2005 06:50 PM

I was thinking that he might have gotten slap and hammer mixed up because he didn't say hammer on.

omgwtfboogie 04-17-2005 07:07 PM

The ending part of "Lateralus" the song has that trippy bass slide thing, it's awesome....

Justin > Paul

White Goodman 04-17-2005 07:10 PM

Well I don't know what Pauls playing is like nowadays but I'm ready to agree with you on that.

SeAmoNKeY 04-17-2005 09:03 PM

Is anyone here a member of toolarmy.com (aka the collective unconscious). If so, would you recomend it, what kind of stuff do they offer to members?
