What's it about? I know nothing of it.

Not quite Pink Floyd related, but I've taken to jamming along with Neil Young tracks lately. Particularly the mellow acoustic stuff, like Heart of Gold and Harvest Moon. Lots of fun.

Broken Arrow 12-15-2005 06:26 PM

Yea Neil!

La Vallee, I used to know whta it was about. I think there is a tribe of natives in it, also people that travel around in a jeep.

DeusExMachina 12-15-2005 08:17 PM

Sounds like The Gods Must Be Crazy!

 that movie's great.

DeusExMachina 12-15-2005 08:44 PM

Hell yes! I love that movie.

Riva 12-16-2005 07:02 AM

La Vallee is about some lady and this guy, apparently, and they track through th e rainforests of PNG searching for a lost valley, described only as Obscured By Clouds on an old map, revered by the natives.

Along the way they have adventures aplenty, and learn something about the wild nature of every man and woman.

I bought Wish you were here today. I can't believe it has taken me this long to get a real copy :upset:.

Bus 12-16-2005 12:35 PM

That's the only cd I've ever bought two copies of. (My first one got scratched up)

Great Album. You listened to it yet?

Also, anyone know any bands similar to Floyd, other than King Crimson and
Genesis?

I've already heard a lot of queen, they're great. As for Yes, and Dire Straits, I've only 'Sultans of Swing'.

DeusExMachina 12-16-2005 02:54 PM

According to www.progarchives.com, Close to the Edge is the best prog album ever released.

I've heard one Caravan album (In the Land of the Grey and Pink) and they are somewhat similar to Floyd. I really want more Caravan material, they are pretty good.

It's actually a website where people just vote. It's not music journalism of any sort. But, yeah, I'm not too impressed with Yes either.

Although I wouldn't say that, its certainly a masterpiece. I love Yes in general, they're so talented. Also, I don't think anyone else said Rush as a Floyd related band.

erock 12-17-2005 09:37 AM

I'd probably say check out porcupine tree. Some of their stuff sounds a lot like coldplay mixed with pink floyd. And if you want one of the greatest prog rock albums ever made check out 2112 by Rush ;)

Porcupine Tree is secks. I love that band.

I really think there is no single defining characteristic for what prog actually is. There are many criteria that are common, but no single unifying factor. Except that it's "progressive," which is of course an incredibly subjective term.

I'd pretty much say lengthy songs, a heavy use of synthisizers, grand concept albums and long instrumental pasages all constitute Prog. Still though, theres just something that has to be there for a band, album, or song to really be prog. I can't describe it really.

robo2448 12-17-2005 12:39 PM

Med's featured genre explains prog very well. Read it for a detailed description of it and some definitive prog bands to check out.

Edit- Here's the link for it- http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=406837

Since everyone's so paranoid about links these days you can just get the link from the Rules and Links thread if you don't trust me.
