New Solitude Aeturnus demo. Sounds ace.
you didnt tell me your opinion about Grand Magus and Sleep Mister  :p |
^Downloaded a couple of songs but I find the effect used on vocals quite irritating :(
Do you mean Electric Wizard or Blood farmers? I never said Dopethrone was good! I don't rate EW at all.
What do you think of Grand Magus and Sleep?
Never heard either. I tend to ignore anything that might even stray into stoner territory! |

Grand Magus are a lot of fun, from what I've heard. Been meaning to get an album for some time now.
Sorry for asking this but what exactly is doom metal? what are the characteristics of it?
This has been explained a few times throughout the thread - quite recently and frequently, I think - so you could find out what it is (along with a whole load of recommendations) by just reading through. |

they're doom (stoner)
|
Yeah, anybody with sense already knows about, and is going to that tour.
|
Ok, my friend was telling me that the hidden track on Kyuss' ...And The Circus Leaves Town is dedicated to Kurt Cobain, what's the name of it and lyrics? I've listened to it, I just don't know what it's called.
|
Not been any mention of YOB in here. Any thoughts? Not really my cup of tea but I'll admit as far as extremely nasty slow metal goes - it doesn't get much more nasty or slow!
|
weird, I didnt see any electric wizard on sputnik
I got carried away with my review and band profile so they deleted them. Well that's what I think anyway. I don't know, I just went there and it was gone. I missed out on seeing Electric Wizard and Pod People, now I find EW are playing with Cathedral and Grand Magus over in Europe. God dammit. Oh... I got Bongzilla's Amerijuanican. It's more on the fuzzed-out, 70's rock style but hey, that's what makes it so darn awesome. Heck, on Weedy Woman the drummer does one of those fast beats that no one's done since the early 70's (...I think). It's great, I'm tempted to review it. |

They're okay. By which I mean, I've got The Illusion of Motion, and it's okay. Generally though I prefer something with a good, solid riff. EDIT: Actually, listening to it again, I like it more than I thought I did. Still nothing really better than just "good", though. |

EDIT: Actually, listening to it again, I like it more than I thought I did. Still nothing really better than just "good", though.
Aye, that's the one I've got. I was just listening to "Exorcism of the Host" from that album and I was struck by what a great riff it's got. I just wish there was another one to go with it! Good but too monotonous. Did none of you see that thread about Pentagram? Can I not rely on anyone to keep the doom going while I'm away?! |
Creozoth. A side-project of some members of Candelmass, though supposedly closer to just traditional heavy metal than doom, and apparently quite good despite the silly name.
So, anyone know anything about them? |
I heard Lars is doing a side project. Can't tell you any more I'm afraid - I guess all we know for sure is that the solos will be good!
I sent you an email btw... did you get it? |
I hadn't checked my inbox for a couple of days, so I hadn't noticed, but I have got it, yeah. Thanks.

There was a big server crash and a bunch of stuff got deleted.
Oh. Silly old me and my paranoia. ...Aren't Creozoth supposed to be power metal? Speaking of the fellows from Candlemass, I got their self-titled release. There's some quality riffage right there. Too bad the lyrics are laughably cheesy, the vocals are horrid (I've never been a fan of Messiah), the drumming is boring and the riffs occasionally get repetitive. Still a decent album, somehow. |
...Aren't Creozoth supposed to be power metal?
I don't know, only read the one review. I suppose the reviewer could have been an idiot. |
So Pelican is pretty much amazing. I've been into instrumental rock of all different kinds lately, and I'm willing to say Pelican is my favorite. I could listen to The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw all day long.

Well an ad for them in Metal Maniacs said "all new power metal from Sweden!" so yeah. I discovered quite a cool band with a stoner vibe to them; SIGH! I've heard Pale Monument and the singing and keyboards sound straight out of the 60's, with a pretty heavy metal riff going behind them. I also got* a few more Electric Wizard albums. Chrono.Naut is awesome, if not short. Come My Fanatics... is a bit... thin? Still trippy and heavy, but it ain't got nothin' on Dopethrone. Let Us Prey gets so much flack for being so different from Dopethrone, I for one think it's the spookiest, doomiest and trippiest thing I've ever heard. ...A Chosen Few starts off with a riff of pure evil. And I love the drum sound, really heavy (I hate the soft *tap* that they call a "snare" on Come My Fanatics...)! I might even go on to love it more than Dopethrone. *downloaded |

...Aren't Creozoth supposed to be power metal?
No. They're supposed to be heavy metal. Straight up heavy metal. The old way.
Speaking of the fellows from Candlemass, I got their self-titled release. There's some quality riffage right there.
Agree so far.
Too bad the lyrics are laughably cheesy
I'd say some of them are a bit odd - certainly nothing up to the lyrical genius of Samarithan or At the Gallows End.
the vocals are horrid (I've never been a fan of Messiah)
The vocals are superb. Messiah's best performance with Candlemass. With the exception of Rob Lowe, Messiah is the best doom metal vocalist.
the drumming is boring
Look, I'm a drummer and I don't have a problem with the drums - they're tight and powerful. What do you expect in a doom metal band? Inverted paradiddles on two kick drums? gravity blasts? You like Electric Wizard and I could play most of their stuff with one hand.
and the riffs occasionally get repetitive.
Again an odd statement from someone who likes EW. In short Candlemass are ace. On another note: I've suggested various bands in here and I'm interested to see if anyone has checked them out. So who has heard: Thee Plague of Gentlemen The Gates of Slumber Solstice Solitude Aeturnus Orodruin Warning |
I've heard bits and pieces of Solitude Aeturnus and Thee Plague of Gentlemen, but not enough. I've been meaning to buy something by Solitude ever since I heard Spiral Descent, from you. That song still gets regular play.
All the others are stuff I have in my mind, that I'd probably buy if I found an album lying around somewhere, but for the moment are still part of the big pile of bands I'm forever intending to check out.
I discovered quite a cool band with a stoner vibe to them; SIGH! I've heard Pale Monument and the singing and keyboards sound straight out of the 60's, with a pretty heavy metal riff going behind them.
The Japanese band? |
My girlfriend got me Salvation by Cult of Luna for valentines day tomorrow, should I be looking forward to some top notch Doomy metal stuff? I've heard some stuff from The Beyond and liked it.
Need to get some more Stoner/Doom shizzle and also need to check out Sigh, seen them mentioned quite a few times now as being decent. |
Thee Plague of Gentlemen The Gates of Slumber Solstice Solitude Aeturnus Orodruin Warning
I have heard all of those. All are excellent. New Dark Age has been getting tons of plays from me lately. |
In short Candlemass are ace.
Ace they are, but they just lack something for me. The drums aren't meant to be technical, I know this, I did not say they had to be. I just said they're boring. They don't do anything. Assassin of the Light has some cool fills in the first verse, that's about as exciting as they get. EW's drummer sucks but he does very energetic fills and good beats, I love what he does for Weird Tales. Messiah never suited Candlemass, for me. He just... I don't really know why, his style just never clicked with me. Sometimes it gets very annoying, and when he tries to be harsh and serious it's hilarious. I loved the guy on Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, he sounded more serious and had a seriously wicked scream on him. Witches is awesome, so is Mars And Volcanoes and The Man Who Fell From The Sky. That's about it. They just sound like a british heavy metal band with a lot of Sabbath influence. I never liked that british style. The riffs, yeah they're good until they get all 80's hair metal. And yes, the riffs in EW are nearly all the same, but that makes it kinda hypnotising... I don't know. The Mass just don't click with me all that often. They have lots of NICE songs though. |
That's what epic doom is - see Solitude Aeturnus, Solstice etc. I think TRUE doom covers it.
The riffs, yeah they're good until they get all 80's hair metal.
Don't start. There's a big big difference between NWOBHM and Poison or Ratt. |
