Slipknot aren't nu-metal, because nu-metal is more like hard rock, not growling or anything like that, but faster and more thingo. Boomy or someything. it normally has a more bassier kind of distortion and stuff like that. that's what nu-metal really is, and that's definitely not slipknot. maybe they're industrial but i don't know what that is
slipknot are nu metal !

Sackonaise 07-09-2004 12:31 PM

Slipknot are categorized as nu metal because of their timing. They are "new" in that sense, and they have a DJ...but their sound is quite different from these other nu-metal bands ie Staind, Static X, whatever...

however they don't really fit into any typical metal categories like Power, Thrash, Death, anything like this.

Sackonaise 07-09-2004 12:33 PM

Who thinks the new In Flames album, Sooundtrack to Your Escape, is nu-metal? I haven't heard the entire thing, but it seems basically like it. The guitar-less verses have really been bothering me, as well as the lack of guitar melodies that made The Jester Race so **** good.

Wow with my inaccuracy, you'd think I missed 21 pages of posts...

I'm not too hot on the genres i guess :/

Kreator 07-09-2004 12:47 PM

Haven't you noticed that few of the bands categorised as nu-metal sound alike anyway?

RavenousMetalist87 07-09-2004 04:42 PM

Hmm...reminds me of the stuff Metal Reference used to have. Metal Reference died x.x

However, the creators ressurected the style in the form of "Antenna".

I have the url laying around in my bookmarks and when I find it, I'll give it to whoever wants it lol...They have some good interviews too.

What Would Strapping Young Lad Be?

the_Leperakorn 07-10-2004 01:40 AM

Thats awsome. I dont think system of a down should be in nu-metal. What is emo??? I hear about it so much and dont have a clue what it is.

Grey Incision 07-10-2004 05:14 AM

emo is short for emotional.......that's all i know

cure_for_cancer17 07-10-2004 05:57 AM

for an guide like this on pretty much every genre/sub-genre (including about 100 i'd never even heard of), visit www.mp3.com and look at the left column titled 'Genre.' it's pretty useful..

(ps this is not meant as advertising but as there's loads of people asking 'what's that' and stuff i figure there's it's not a problem)

thetrooper1969 07-10-2004 08:25 AM

good job legions, im a noob and this has cleared up a lot about these confusing metal genres...

Grey Incision 07-10-2004 06:08 PM

ok......lets all ignore the hippy's question then........

perls 07-10-2004 08:01 PM

good thread. Sometime in the future it could be made bigger to encompass more subgenres

Grey Incision 07-10-2004 10:29 PM

*suicides*

aglobalthreat 07-10-2004 11:03 PM

okay, im not really a fan of metal but i like the band every time i die, i dont know if its real metal or not. i dont care. what kind of metal would you consider them though

(p.s. if this has already been asked sorry, i dont feel like reading all of the posts)

Kreator 07-11-2004 04:24 AM

i think they are metalcore..

Bartender 07-11-2004 02:34 PM
alright.. in a nutshell, Emo is one of the "cool" things to be right now. skater/punk/emo is the new prep right about now.

So, emo is basically stupid bands with names like, "water in the sky" or some ****, and they sing about cutting their wrists and breaking up with their girlfriend. they also like to wear converse shoes, dye their hair black, and make it look like they're trying to be different, but they aren't.

yeah, they're also obsessed with x's. like for a screen name of some sort.. XxXXtakingxbackXsundayXXxxxXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX .. and the x's continue on for forever.
People who know me know I don't like arguing, so, putting it nicely; bullshit :)

the_Leperakorn 07-11-2004 09:46 PM

So emo is the music of the 'metro-sexual'??

FatherKeeL 07-11-2004 10:23 PM

personallz i have got no idea how to classify slipknot.

but they are NOT industrial and have got NOTHING to do with black metal.

they dont fit in 100% in what i consider "nu metal" though... (koRn, limp bizket, linkin park etc.)

yeah... earlyer on somebody called static-x "nu metal" ... static-x is not nu metal, static-x is one of the few "new" bands that can be clearly catigorized in my opinion, and they are industrial.

FatherKeeL 07-11-2004 10:30 PM

okok ... i just read more of the thread that ive missed. sorry for repeating myself, but i find this important:

static-x = industrial.

just becouse they are a new band does not make them "nu-metal"

Kreator 07-12-2004 07:42 AM

static-x are a new band?

nothing to gein 07-12-2004 10:42 PM
slipknot are nu metal !
u may as well give up because i'm not backing down because they're not nu-metal because they're heavier than that :P

How could symphonic metal be described? And could anyone name some bands, please!

NJMetalMeister 07-13-2004 10:54 AM

Symphonic metal is pretty much defined in the name. It is a metal band that takes in symphonic instrumentation and elements. Some Symphonic metal bands off the top of my head are:

Therion
Haggard
newer Dimmu Borgir
the "Death's Design" album from Diabolical Masquerade.

djeepee 07-13-2004 12:07 PM

does someone can give me examples of black metal (songs but no dimmu borgir i alerdy know)

Kreator 07-13-2004 12:27 PM

immortal
1349
dimmu borgir
