Lunch, since you are the biggest Who fanboy here :p maybe you know the answer to a question that's been a-brewin' in my head for a while now.

Why did the Who use so many piano/keyboard pieces in their songs when they didn't even have a permanent keyboard fixture in their band until after '78? I mean, I understand them just using a few simple key parts every once in a while, but it seems like a lot of their songs, especially their bigger singles, have key parts, and a lot of times complex ones. I mean, look at Baba O'Riley! Is there a real reason why they didn't just hire a permanent keys player? Did they seriously just get a random studio artist to record with them that much?

Just wondering.
For the parts on "Baba O'Riley" and "Won't Get Fooled Again", it was just a synthesizer, not keyboard. It was the same one Floyd used in "On The Run". All they had to do was program in a few notes and let it repeat. Besides, I'm pretty sure Townshend could play the piano anyways.

I thought it was a synthesizer, but I guess I just don't really understand why they didn't just go ahead and hire a keys player for their shows and stuff when they made piano/keys so integral for what was basically a power trio with a singer.

Glitterati 02-06-2006 06:00 PM

I watched that DVD of The Who - The Kids Are Alright - in my guitar class today. Pete fu'cks that guitar up real good.

Mark Knopfler is slowly becoming one of my favorite guitarists

Mark Knopfler is rad. I know it's probably their most popular song, but Sultans of Swing really kicks ass.

magicbus 02-06-2006 06:21 PM

I really want to here more of their stuff like "Sultan's of Swing", but honestly, I don't know if there other stuff sounds like it. It's got that cool guitar man. It's so cool. And the solo is awesome.

BigTrav415 02-06-2006 06:25 PM

Those triads at the end = secks

I just had apple pie with vanilla ice cream.

Because before their attempted Quadrophenia tour (where with the use of back tapes failed miserably), their live show was amazing with just their four piece group. The Who obviously enjoyed using the studio for its effects and impact on the music (the Who Sell Out especially, but Tommy also has a few overdubs and piano and horn sections), but their live show was so stunning with their basic instrument line up. And with a group as volatile as the Who, it probably would not have been a good idea to add in another member(s) to their line up, even though Quadrophenia (the tour) would've benefited.

IMO, some of Mark Knopfler's solo stuff is really hit and miss. I think RNR is the resident Straits/Knopfler fan around here, so he'd probably answer.

I'm fairly certain it's him playing the piano in Baba O'Riley, he just doubletracked the song with guitar and piano.

w00t colors. I had a Dire Straits greatest hits that someone uploaded once that was really good, but somehow it got deleted from my computer. I have to buy some of their stuff because it's really good. I also have a Knopfler solo cd that isn't very good, so yeah I think his solo career especially is a little up and down.

Edit- Wow yellow is bright. That hurt my eyes.

I'll type in blue. That's cooler

I found a Brothers In Arms in my dad's vinyl, it has such a cool cover art, light blue pastel background with a multi-colored resonator guitar. Freakin' awesome. I hope to listen to it sometime.

I just got another Neil Young bootleg, w00t. Fillmore East.

What are some albums that were recorded live but released as like studio albums. Well not studio albums but albums that had songs that weren't on the studio albums.

Such as:

Rust Never Sleeps

maybe

Live at the Fillmore East but there are a couple that were originally done in the studio.

JonG 02-06-2006 07:24 PM

Biology is dumb. Chemistry I haven't taken yet.

My Biology teacher is a whore.

My Spanish teacher wears about 9 pounds of make-up a day. It's disgusting.

As in Beanie Sigel.

Kidding..

Grateful Dead :)

This Jerry Garcia biography is good so far. The first time he heard acoustic blues and liked it was Big Bill Broonzy. I have two of his albums.

zomg

Illmatic 02-06-2006 07:34 PM

Hah.

I actually like Beanie Sigel though so watch what you say.

I was asking because I know some jam bands (well actually just Phish) do a lot of crazy covers on live shows.
