Intense mathematics are applied in the world of management.
too many stupid math haters itt
Yeah that could be, but I think part of the reason a lot of people hate it is because it's usually taught so horribly wrong in both the West and East. It's not supposed to be so much about memorizing formulae and going through the material at a rapid pace as it is about comprehension. I personally didn't really like math until I was leaving high school, when I discovered it for myself.

Those who want to know math should learn about statistics. The hardest part about statistics is the concepts, where the formulae are mostly easy. If, like me, you're more a symbolic than visual thinker, most of the visualization is easy (e.g., visualizing part of the area under the normal pdf). Most importantly, statistics has more realistic applications in daily life than most any other field of math, so you can exercise it frequently.

If you want to go advanced, look into statistical decision making, which shows you how to plan like a Terminator.
+, -, x, ÷
Well, usually. Accounting is pretty much all (very boring) arithmetic, but the math involved in operations research (a.ka. management science) is considerably more advanced.

yup, thats my entire math experience in high school summed up. As soon as I began to understand something we'd move on and totally leave it behind.

Deth 01-19-2009 11:02 PM

I plan like Batman tbh.

yah pretty much

RouteOne 01-19-2009 11:06 PM

I wish I understood mathematics better, I always wanted to get into computer science but I never had the grades math-wise

Angmar 01-19-2009 11:08 PM

If I can hold the C- I have in Alg 2 right now I think I'll be ok, I just hope my teacher doesn't give us a final, no way in hell I remember most of the stuff we've done since September.

You would benefit strongly from an autodidactic approach.

I mean it's up to you and everything. Your career probably won't require a lot of math (btw, I would try getting into historical research or a university library position rather than school-teaching), but it DOES rule to be able to know what the Terminator would do in light of a utility matrix, priors, and adequate sample information in any situation.

btw, I sucked at math for most of high school.

sounds like me but 5 years ago

Deth 01-19-2009 11:09 PM

You're a senior barely pulling a C in Algebra 2?

Christ, maybe there's some ZOG based classes that you would do better in.

RouteOne 01-19-2009 11:10 PM

well thats the problem I think most teaching has today. A lot of it is simply robotic memorization when it should be about critical thinking.

What is the autodidactic approach?

As for history education, I really do not know if I want to do it anymore...I've already taught a class (and well I may add), and for some reason I felt out of place. It wasn't the fact that it was my first time, it was a weird different feeling of doing something I know I won't enjoy.

If you learn how to program--I recommend Python--a lot of mathematical concepts will make sense in retrospect, particularly those of the 'discrete' variety. Plus you generally don't need a lot of math to learn how to program, just basic reasoning ability.

btw, this chick looks kind of like Judy Garland but I would be more willing to bang her

Seriously I hate people who go around and shove it in my face that they're in calculus or whatever, I honestly don't care and it doesn't bother me that someone is special enough to be that far ahead of me in one subject.

RouteOne 01-19-2009 11:20 PM

People just have different strengths and weaknesses.

adb 01-19-2009 11:22 PM

basically.

That's why they have these things in College called majors, Angmar.

What do you wanna major in

Yeah, I know, dumbass, my point was a lot of people act like math is the undying subject to judge ones intelligence.

My major interest right now is architecture, like I've said, minimal math, lots of interesting looking courses, and studying abroad in Rome.

pate 01-19-2009 11:25 PM

You have no idea the amount of people at colleges who are political science or something and say that math/science/engineering has nothing to do with intelligence and it's just plug and chug blah blah blah

Everybody has to prop themself up somehow.
