I can't be bothered to tune down to play that song. I'm so lazy when it comes to tuning. I try to avoid drop D for that reason as well.
That's the reason why i have 2 basses.:D

Deth 11-02-2005 10:25 AM

Yeah, I find the stuff I write to be a lot more interesting if I stay in standard.

EDIT: To Txus, I need another bass :(.

Shred Danson 11-02-2005 10:29 AM
Yeah, I find the stuff I write to be a lot more interesting if I stay in standard.
Yeah, a lot of people as what tuning we play in, and I just say "standard, bitch!" ...we are leaning on tunign down a step though...

Deth 11-02-2005 10:41 AM

I can't write technical stuff in drop tunings. I forget where I am.

Hells Bells 11-02-2005 11:01 AM

My favourite Opeth song to play is Silhouette..its so dark and ominious. I just got my bass, so I wanted to start doing something else, like Blackwater Park looks like it would be fun. That, and it's one of my favourite songs by them :p

Deth 11-02-2005 11:04 AM

You can play Silhouette on piano? That's pretty sweet.

Shred Danson 11-02-2005 11:07 AM

I wish I could play piano, man...

Txus 11-02-2005 11:10 AM

I want to learn BWP on bass!

Shred Danson 11-02-2005 11:11 AM
I want to learn BWP on bass!
It's a pretty simple song...I don't think it'd be too hard to play on bass.

Deth 11-02-2005 11:14 AM

The tabs pretty easy. If you're a decent slapper for the end part, it wouldn't be a problem.

I may learn that later today. I've got nothing better to do.

Txus 11-02-2005 11:15 AM
It's a pretty simple song...I don't think it'd be too hard to play on bass.
I'll try to learn it today cauz i have nothing better to do.:p

Hells Bells 11-02-2005 11:15 AM
You can play Silhouette on piano? That's pretty sweet.
Heh, only like the first three pages, after hours of scouring the net for pages that give/sell sheet music, that's all I can find. I've figured out most of the rest of it...I should just finish the rest of the damn thing and get it over it
I wish I could play piano, man...
/throws beginner piano books at ICB

Then go start learning :p

Deth 11-02-2005 11:18 AM

I used to be pretty good at piano. Then I stoped playing, and now I've lost all my skillz.

I regret that.

Shred Danson 11-02-2005 11:19 AM
/throws beginner piano books at ICB
Hey, while you're at it, through a fricken' piano at me  ...

I want to be able to do the stuff I can on guitar and then play it on keyboards...that would be awesome (I'm such a CoB-head)...but I really want to learn how to play piano so I could do some dark, melodic intros and shit...plus I'd bust out some Opeth at school in the band room  I'm getting the band director here into Opeth.
I'll try to learn it today cauz i have nothing better to do. :p
Good luck :) I'll probably be recording today...

Crysiss 11-02-2005 11:27 AM

ahh, im starting to play piano.....pauses.....well, keyboard lol

But i learned a fair judgement and the grand conjuration with they keyboard

Shred Danson 11-02-2005 11:28 AM

I just spend too much time on my guitar to bother actually learning how to play piano...I know where the notes are and everything I just haven't spent a lot of time playing as I probably should...

Sixty Ton Angel 11-02-2005 01:09 PM

I wish I could learn to piano.
Probably the most beatiful instrument in my opinion.

My grandparents have one and they say I'm always welcome to go down and practise but I'd really love one of my own.

I have a keyboard but never really saw the appeal......

Deth 11-02-2005 01:11 PM

Keyboards just don't have nearly the same aura.

Sixty Ton Angel 11-02-2005 01:15 PM

Or enough buttons

Toaster 11-02-2005 02:17 PM

I played piano for years, then I got really bored with it and quit. I got to gr 9 Conservatory grade though, so I can legally teach piano at any institute. :D

Just thought I'd blow my own horn a little. :p

Toaster 11-02-2005 02:18 PM
It's a pretty simple song...I don't think it'd be too hard to play on bass.
But that slapping part is sweet.
But that slapping part is sweet.
I concur.

Shattered_Future 11-02-2005 02:24 PM

I took a year of piano when I was 6, stopped at 7, and started screwing around with it again at the beginning of the summer.

I attempt to write piano/keyboard parts for my music, and I know the rudiments of piano...just not very good at it. :upset:

Used to be quite good...not anymore.

Det_Nosnip 11-02-2005 02:42 PM
Or enough buttons
Mine has 88 keys. Do I really need THAT many more?

I happen to love keyboards. Although nothing can beat the pure acoustic sound of a perfectly tuned piano, keyboards and synthesizers can do so much more musically. The technology just keeps getting better, and some of the softsynths they are developing (Synful Orchestra, for example) are flat out amazing.

Plus, as a 22 year old who works at Starbucks, a MIDI keyboard is simply a much more realistic option. It was $200, I don't have to tune it, and I can make it sound like ANYTHING I want to if I try hard enough.

Deth 11-02-2005 02:46 PM

Again though, you can't beat a grand piano.

Shattered_Future 11-02-2005 02:49 PM

I like synths though...they give you a lot more options to work with.

While a piano has only one sound (granted, its quite a good one), synths have thousands. Plus, you can do some really spacy stuff you can't do on a normal piano.

I have a SMALL *** keyboard...no idea how many keys it has. It's like a children's keyboard...extremely small keys, and 6 settings. :D

We also have a normal piano, just not a grand piano.

Toaster 11-02-2005 02:50 PM
Again though, you can't beat a grand piano.
Mine's CONSTANTLY going out of tune. It sits right beside a window, and I think that has to do with it somehow, with the changes in temperature and such. Grands are good (they're grand in fact :p ), but they are very expensive and take up a ton of room. You can get a very similar sounding synthesiser that doesn't go out of tune for half the price and an eighth of the space.

Can you link me? I've searched for those pages, but all my searches found was dead links.

I could probably find them if I tried hard enough, but I like the easy way. Link please! :p

ok lateralus 11-02-2005 04:56 PM

So... least favorite Opeth album?

Mine would have to be Ghost Reveries. Not nearly as emotional or complex as the others, and Reverie/Harlequin Forest kinda blows. Though there are some really fantastic songs. I guess it's about a 8/10, which is why it's the worst Opeth album for me, cause all of their others are 10/10s :thumb:

Shadows 11-02-2005 04:59 PM

From the albums I'm really familiar with, I'd say Deliverence is my least favorite.

Heh, you're the thread designated conversation starter. :thumb:

I'd say either Damnation or Orchid is my least favourite. Damnation just doesn't have what I like best about Opeth- the balance of heavy and light, and the awesomely odd chord progressions. It's a great light album, just not a great Opeth album.

Hmm, yeah I kind of see what you mean about that, it sounds maybe a little bland compared to, say, Still Life. But actually it has some of Opeth's most interesting chord progressions, I'd say. The guitar playing is really unique.

I don't think it's unique at all, really. In fact I think the only real good thing about it is that even though the song ideas have been done to death (not by Opeth), at least they're done very well. Even his voice isn't that great. I guess the more I listen to it, the more reasons I find not to enjoy it.
Fav. Opeth song at the moment

White Cluster

"hangman clutching at his tools" I will come for youuuu!":thumb:
That song is tight, I love how it fades out...

''...Beckoning right behind me...'' then that little acoustic riff to end a great album. :)

Txus 11-02-2005 06:18 PM

I just learned BWP on bass....the slapping part almost at the end was a bit complicated cauz i suck at slapping but i figure it out, IM SO FREAKING HAPPY! :D

I have a Yamaha RBX170 which was my first one, and also a ESP J-1005 LTD Deluxe 5 string bass.

Deth 11-02-2005 07:46 PM

I have a Spector Legend 4. Love it with all my heart.

I think my least favorite album is Orchid. I still like it, it's just not as refined as the other albums.

Nice. I have a Fender Lone Star Stratocaster. Before that, I was using a squire. This Lone Star made a world of difference.

Deth 11-02-2005 08:03 PM

Just about anything does after having a Squire.
