That was the crux in the appeal of Lennon/McCartney lyrics; not being so specific that the listener can find a meaning that speaks to them. example Lennon's 'I Am The Walrus' -- so many puns and Lennon's brand of 'gobbeltygook', as he coined it, almost every different listener came away with a different slant on the song.

pigonthewing82 01-09-2006 08:34 PM

Thats what I love about the Beatles their songs can be made your own. I mean Strawberry Feilds Forever to me has so many meanings that I could listen to that song everyday and pull something else out of it just depending on what kind of mood I was in.

rockinbass17 01-09-2006 09:47 PM
The beatles are fine
but they dont write any songs with any meaning
they are all catchy and no point to them, let it be is about the only song with imagery and im not talking like lucy in the sky with diamonds is LSD. I don't care much for the rolling stones but listen to sympathy for the devil and see how they have the balls to write something with a little contraversy, and not afraid to be dixie chicked.
No contraversy with The Beatles? How do you explain the whole "We're bigger than Jesus" epidemic?

Listen to While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Cry Baby Cry, Let It Be, Blackbird, In My Life, Come Together, Something, Here Comes the Sun, or Elanor Rigby for meaningful Beatles songs. (to name only afew).

sixsixone 01-10-2006 12:29 AM
Is it possible that you just don't catch the meaning in the songs? No, of course not, how silly of me. You should do some research.

By the way, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds isn't about LSD. It's a song John wrote describing pictures drawn by his son Julian.
don't catch the meaning of the songs,
show me the meaning of this besides the obvious
because to me its not full of imagery, im not trashing the beatles i just dont liek how catchy they are

Can’t buy me love, love,
Can’t buy me love.
I’ll buy you a diamond ring my friend,
If it makes you feel alright,
I’ll buy you anything my friend,
If it makes you feel alright,
For I don’t care too much for money,
For money can’t buy me love.
I’ll give you all I’ve got to give,
If you say you love me too,
I may not have a lot to give,
But what I’ve got I’ll give to you,
For I don’t care to much for money.
For money can’t buy me love.
Can’t buy me love, ev’rybody tells me so,
Can’t buy me love, no, no, no, no.
Say you don’t want no diamond ring,
And I’ll be satisfied,
Tell me that you want the kind of things,
That money just can’t buy,
For I don’t care to much for money.
For money can’t buy me love.
Can’t buy me love, ev’rybody tells me so,
Can’t buy me love, no, no, no, no.
Can’t buy me love, love,
Can’t buy me love.

correct me if im wrong but most of thier songs are like that, theres no contraversy, theres no nothing... it's just fun.

Phallus Dei 01-10-2006 12:30 AM

Your wrong, way to pick an earlier song that was basically pure pop. How bout something from the White Album son.

i said within thier music, those are meaningful but look at the majority of thier songs, my idea was a generalization not saying every song is liek that.

A majority of their songs were meaningful, just not alot of their early stuff which by your last example is what your used to. I recommend picking up Abbey Road and try to tell me Here Comes the Sun isn't emotional, same goes with Something.

Leper 01-10-2006 12:40 AM

^^exactly^^

Try listening to something written after 1964.

Well, your generalization is wrong. Just throwing that out :thumb:

I'm seeing this Beatles tribute band called Rain later tonight. I'm pretty sure I mentioned it a long time ago. I hope they're good.

And I borrowed the 'Working Class Hero' CD from my friend today. It's great.

DeusExMachina 01-10-2006 04:27 PM

Rain are quite good. When I saw them, they played a couple songs (don't remember which, but I think it included I Am the Walrus) stripped of all effects and stuff, just on the acoustic guitars. It sounded great.

TheDMV 01-10-2006 04:33 PM

I saw a commercial for Rain on television. They looked all right, and I think that the commercial mentioned that they'd be doing another show because the others had been sold out.

I've seen a Beatles Cover band by the name of Beatlemania, I beleive. I was young so I was just stoked that I was seeing someone play Beatles tunes.

bcf717 01-10-2006 08:20 PM

For how much Sixsixone doesn't care for the early stuff, sure is funny how he got the lyrics down pat for 'Can't Buy Me Love.' :D Their stuff just sticks in your brain whether you want it to or not.....

Rain PWNES. I have seen them three times, and every time they get better. They play loads of song(very well played), have great costumes for different parts of the show(Shay,SGT,Abbey,Early) and it is a very fun experience. I would give them 5/5 stars eaily. Very good.

There playing in calgary like 4 times in the next week...but I can't get a ride up there :(

BigTrav415 01-10-2006 09:22 PM

I've seen a local cover band (local to Chapel Hill, not here) called Backbeat, they were pretty awesome. Not really dressed like them or anything, but they did jokingly call each other John, Paul, George and Ringo on-stage. "Paul" played a violin bass as well, and I think "John" had the glasses, could be wrong though.

MidnightRider 01-10-2006 09:54 PM

It's hard to imagine a cover band doing justice to The Beatles. Do the vocals sound right?

Today in world history class we had one of those tests to see where everyone stands. One of the questions was "Who were the 4 members of The Beatles." Only 6 out of 27 people in the class got it right. :(

Leper 01-12-2006 01:10 AM

My friend went to see Rain about 5 months ago when they were here and said they were really good. I've been kicking myself ever since for not going.:(

Good! They were awesome. Fake Paul was scary though. Some kids at my school said they saw me, cause I was at the front :) But yeah, I wish I get to see an actual Beatle live someday.

Leper 01-12-2006 01:20 AM

Scary? How so?

blue3 01-12-2006 01:31 AM

Just the way he was, I guess... I describe things so well. He's a really good singer.

Yes the voclas sound great. They sound like them very much. You could close your eyes and you would actually think that you were seeing them(not that you have to colse your eyes, they look alot like them already).

Thats just sad. Bunch of idiots Sad thing is your school would probably beat mine. Sigh. :upset:

Leper 01-13-2006 01:14 AM

Well I really hope Rain comes back here soon. I'm sure they probably will. Do they play a good mix of earlier and later tunes?
Well I really hope Rain comes back here soon. I'm sure they probably will. Do they play a good mix of earlier and later tunes?
Yes they do. They do a Ed Sullivan set(1963-65) Sgt Pepper(66-68) and Abbey Road(69-70). All very well done, with many costume changes and great music. They usually play the "bigger" songs (never played helter skelter though). The only thing that is even slightly wrong is that the guy who plays Paul is right handed. It takes nothing away from the music, and you hardly even notice, just thought I'd mention that.

George Harrison looked like Jesus during the Abbey Road set, haha. And fake Paul kept winking at the guys. But anyways, it was a good show.

They're still good. You should see them if you have a chance.

Why didn't you say that when I asked how Paul was scary?! That explains it completely!
