Good luck with that:chug:
this is what I'm doing:

[I]To Whom it May Concern:

This is an open letter to any parties involved in the development of the Pleasant Valley region southeast of Portland, as well as to the public. This letter is to be sent to any known parties and to appropriate media publications, but it is not limited to those who receive an individual copy.

I will get right to the point. My name is Justin Radford. I am a native of Oregon, of the Portland Metropolitan Area. My entire life has been spent in the residence of what is unofficially known as Pleasant Valley, a small geographic location whose borders for intents of this letter are defined as this: everything north of Sunnyside Road, west of Weise Road, east of 162nd Avenue, and south of McKinley Road.

My greatest fear growing up was the onset of Suburbia; the creation of a suburban wasteland to take the place of the beautiful forests and farms that bless my homeland. For years I cried at night, wondering if I would wake up the next day to be in the middle of a clear cut landscape, to make way for the developers' raping habits. To tear the Earth of its soul, of its beloved. To destroy the homes of many families, to pervert the properties of such families. To make way for a money making scheme that will allow SUV driving consumerists to move into the comforts of their ignorance, in a nice 3000 square foot home on a 1/8 acre plot, without even realizing that they now sleep on what was hallowed land, inhabited by a farm, an orchard, a child's play yard, the dreams and hopes of generations of decent human beings, lost.

I have watched the growing developments of Happy Valley and Butler Road for far too long, and it is now time for me to rise up and act against these atrocities. This letter will be the first of many protests against the local governments responsible for that which I fear. I am announcing full opposition to the development of Pleasant Valley.

My proposal is this: to stop any further development within the boundary I have previously established. Any existing development will remain as a remainder to my tardiness in approaching this situation. People who already own property will have the same rights and liberties assuming that Pleasant Valley was not in the Urban Growth Boundary. They cannot sell their land to a developer, but if they want to build a house or a barn on empty land, assuming all the permits are in place, that is their prerogative.

Now many of you will be thinking why? After all, very few people share my personal sentiments on this matter. How many people are 'tree-huggers', pagans, or other lovers of the natural environment? How many people love wild animals and the integrity of their habitats? I'm sure that number is few, but make no mistake that supporters of this cause is not limited to those.

Developers run a business. Businesses exist to make profit for the owners. Purely basic economics in a capitalist structure. Developers make money by stripping the land bare, reshaping it if necessary, selling off the lumber, evicting farmers from their 60 year old homesteads, and build a monotony of houses that all look the same, because in the end the dollar is all that matters. Who with any conscious would want something like this to happen? Even if you do not believe that the Earth is sacred ground that should not be strip mined like it is, on a purely ethical and moral matter how can people allow developers to be so profit driven at the expense of so much?

Another argument is that we must make room for people to live and we must continue the growth of our economy in order to keep our society in check. Aside from the point that society needs a huge overhaul anyway, I think that particular argument is dubious. To paraphrase former Oregon Governor (and Saint by some standards) Tom McCall, “You're welcome to visit Oregon, but don't live here.” Using the old phrase “if you build it, they will come,” you can just study the antithesis and say, “if you don't build it, they won't come.”

If people were so determined to provide additional housing in Portland, sprawl is obviously not the answer. With the decline of oil reserves and the compounding threat of global warming, a suburban residential district is extremely inefficient. Why not live in a city where school, food, medical, recreation, police, and public transportation are all easily within walking distance? If the city and county governments do not accept my first challenge, accept this challenge: no more new developments and subdivisions until every vacant and derelict lot in the entire city of Portland has been filled (Portland being defined as places where there has already been development). I see so many abandoned factories and warehouses that could be torn down and developed into prosperous residential districts in the same vein as the Pearl District.

I also want to add a little side comment about the 'city' of Damascus. I was just three weeks shy of being able to vote in the 2004 elections, but my family voted in the existence of the city of Damascus for one purpose; to protect us from Happy Valley. Completely feudal style thinking, but it made sense. Happy Valley had already developed miles upon miles of land all along Sunnyside Road, and it was only a matter of years before they engulfed us and turned Pleasant Valley into their inferior step child. Keeping the ritz in their own elite aristocratic valley, but developing our valley into a hive of low income housing to produce a plethora of tax money to fuel their interests, was but one of many fears. By establishing Damascus, we could put a road block on their development, and since at the time Damascus had no interest in raping the Earth, it seemed like a good deal.

Not only did property taxes skyrocket, but the city council became this perverted force cut off from public interest and hellbent on establishing their 'growth plans', which would not have been much better then under the tyranny of Happy Valley. Our house is located in a Green Zone, which means that although we'll have a highway in our front yard, at least our immediate area would be safe from development, but would be worth pennies should we choose to sell it. And everybody thought only the Soviet Union was capable of oppression. As a protest, I always address myself as living in Boring, and I still use the Boring zip code of 97009, despite the creation of the new zip code for the eventual, but not inevitable, development of Damascus.

What I am telling you is just general stuff. Concepts and ideas people can understand, what they can relate to. But I haven't told you my own feelings. I have lived on the same property for my whole life. My memories are everything; my beautiful apple tree in the side yard, one of the best climbing trees ever grown. My memories of my climbing it are forever with me, and I can visit my memories, and climb the tree whenever I want. The tall maple in the front yard, the place where my brother and I have had our picture taken every fall since I was 2. Our huge backyard has been home to many games of tag, badminton, and frisbee tosses. Not to mention the huge woods behind my house, the most beautiful place in the whole world. Serene. Peaceful. Wonderful. Walking back there removes all the dust and clutter that fill our everyday lives. It connects us with who we are, and what we want, and for a moment, we are free spirits. Home to deer, coyotes, and thousands upon thousands of frogs, all living innocent lives, void of the hatred that we humans possess. All they want to do is to survive. To live and be free.

Removing all of that would be the saddest moment in my entire life. Removing those memories is a crime on all levels. Removing beauty is treason.

Years ago, I have made my life goal to stop the development of Pleasant Valley, at whatever costs. I swear to all of those involved, I will never stop, never give up, and do anything in my limited power to make sure you fail.

This must not end.

Or do you propose we stop people from reproducing?

Put your efforts towards studying in school, and perhaps someday you can develop a product, or something even greater that will allow the growing mass of people on this earth to live here, without consuming it.

Attempting to fight population growth is a excerise in futitlity.

It has nothing to do with population growth.

Well, yes, obviously what I'm speaking of is a side effect of population growth, but I'm not telling people to stop reproducing (which would be nice though).

Even though this can apply to everywhere, this is only specifically in the area around my home. As sad and as selfish as it is to say, I'd rather they just build somewhere else then here.

Pretty much I'm interpreting this as an invasion, if you will.

Undisco Kidd 02-14-2007 08:55 PM

I just downloaded their first one, Body Popping Moon Walking Top Rocking, and I'm going to get the next one, Please Refrain from Fronting, when I finish listening to the prior.

Do you have AIM/MSN?

I've got enough for all the additions I want to make my kit, if I use ebay. Problem is, won't there be a tonne of import taxes and what have you put on everything as it gets shipped here (I'm in the UK)? Does anyone know the extent to the import taxes, and ways to avoid them? I'm really not up to waiting another 4 months for the upgrade. Thanks.

My guess is that the shipping will cost more (but you might have already factored that in).

I can't help you, since the stuff I've gotten shipped from the states fell under NAFTA (north america free trade agreement).

MattMarlow 02-14-2007 09:08 PM

Ahh ok, I had factored in the extras on shipping, but I was worried worried about taxes adn duties, like VAT and Import Duty. Otherwise the price will spiral up to JUST under highstreet prices, then i may as well go and give my money to a local business and get better service and the ability to try before i buy.

Thanks for the reply

Well, my question is, why does it have to grow in such a stupid way? The commerical housing development is such a bad idea, what ever happened to just having your own houses built?

I make that point in my letter. If somebody wanted to buy an acre and build a house, assuming the permits are in order, let them.

Btw the first pic is where I live. I'm only about 3 miles from a development that looks like that, except its way uglier and has even less trees (except that's in San Jose, I'm in Oregon).

Sunshine 02-14-2007 09:34 PM

That's what SV is becomming...all of these houses are being built by big companies, but nobody really can figure out why or who's buying them.
