I like Bob Dylan's Mr. Tambourine Man more. The singing is more simple and sounds better. I also like acoustic guitar better than clean electric.
|
I don't like The Byrds covers of Dylan's songs.
I'm looking for a Grateful Dead album similiar to Workingman's Dead, with that country-rockish feel. |
Wake of the Flood (loosely)
From the Mars Hotel (some of it) Skull & Roses (live) Europe '72 (live) Reckoning (live) Those three live albums would be your best bet to finding more Country-Rock albums. |
Bob Dylan's Mr. Tambourine Man is better than The Byrds. Though I love the Byrds cover.
Bob Dylan is one of my favorite live performers. It's true that his performances nowadays don't live up to the standards he set it in the sixties though. But in the '60s he was brilliant live, both alone acoustic and live with The Band. Especially with The Band. Those shows were special. I'm also the official whore of Live '75. |
Speaking of the Dead, I helped my friend edit this movie they had to make for History in the grade above me, and the movie has all this really dramatic music and stuff, so as a joke I was going to shift right into Mexicali Blues for the credits  We ended up just letting the last song in the movie run through the credits, it was the Halo 2 Mjolnir Mix with Steve Vai playing guitar, you know. I still like the effect, we just "kept it real" through the whole movie, save a few funny parts that fit well, besides the whole movie being cornilly funny because of the overly dramatic music with the slo-mo peasant-charging scenes and fight scenes. Plus in all of the inside scenes you can see this inflatable Budwieser bottle with a sombrero hanging from the ceiling. I keep trying to upload it somehow to show you guys, but it's a HUGE file, it's 9 1/2 minutes long and like half a gig, because it loses major quality if you try to compress it any. I burned it to a DVD, and I showed it to a bunch of people on my laptop today, and everyone said it was the best homemade movie they'd ever seen, so :)
To Schyma: Didn't you have Thelonius Monk in your avatar for a while? I kept meaning to make sure it was him, but then you switched avvys so I forgot about it. He grew up here, I was in the library a couple of weeks ago and they had a little exhibit set up on a table about him, it was just like a science project-esque posterboard and some artifacts, like one of his records that was called "Thelonius Monk: Straight, No Chaser". It said they were showing a documentary about his life later in the week, but I was having surgery then :-/ I really need to hear some of his stuff. EDIT: Someone else put the word documentary in your post with a lowercase o, it is turning mine into a 0 for some reason. EDIT #2: I know some of The Closing of Winterland has some great country-rockish sounding stuff, especially Me And My Uncle->Big River. |
Closing of Winterland is good :)
I've been listening to Jim Gaffigan today, he was on Comedy Central last night. He does stand up on food, it's pretty good. |
Closing of Winterland is good :)
I've been listening to Jim Gaffigan today, he was on Comedy Central last night. He does stand up on food, it's pretty good.
His voice drives me crazy, not to mention the way he starts out his bit usually "Oh my god I didn't think he'd be that pale." I really don't like him... I just walked home in the rain listening to GS!BY's Lift Your etc... epic moment it was, and the first time I've ever listened to a whole song of their uninterrupted. Bob Dylan's Mr. Tamb Man is my favorite song of his I just like the vocals in it. Dylan sucks live I saw him a year ago, horrible show. Half the songs he skipped most of the lyrics, make up all the excuses you want but he is not good live, and from what I heard the type of show I went to isn't unusual. Ya Debbie was a hottie back in the day, but any rock chick gets an automatic 8/10 stars in my book. EDIT: Jon, did you happen to see if Mitch Hedberg got into Comedy Centrals like top whatever count down it was? I got to some fat guy and I had to go. None of the comedians struck me as funny that I saw. Other then this one guy with a beard at the piano. |
Yeah, I don't like his soft voice. It can get old after awhile.
I liked the delivery part. Nope, didn't see it. Anybody else love how the Dead put in historical names like Charlie Chan and P.T. Barnum in U.S. Blues? This site is awesome for their lyrics: http://arts.ucsc.edu/gdead/agdl/#songs |

I was chilling to Uncle John's Band today, and I was thinking about how cool it would be to do one of those sing-along videos where you just film a bunch of people mouthing or singing lines, and put them altogether with the song synced up to it, ala the Bohemian Rhaposdy thing the British Royal Navy did or the Kokovo/Kosovo one the Dutch army (I think) did. I'll try to find the links... maybe we could get all the CR regs sending their clips to me, and I'll put them together!
/knows plan will fail horribly Links anyway for humor: http://www.ifilm.com/ifilmdetail/2681738 http://www.ifilm.com/ifilmdetail/2679631 |
I think Dylan's lyrics in almost all of his songs are incredible. Got to say that Mr. Tambourine Man is my favorite song of his though.
Who else agrees that Dylan is terrible live? He wasn't bad on the Concert for Bangladesh, but in general I think he's a pretty lousy live performer.
I think Dylan's best lyrics are Its All Right Ma (I'm only bleeding) and A Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall. As for Dylan live, he goes through phases where he is different but I think Dylan overall is FAR better live. He puts a lot more emotion into his vocals (most of the time). He also almost reinvents some songs. Though he is reported of being very bad when he is drunk. |
My algebra teacher said her husband's been to see him like 5 times, and the time he took his son was the only time Dylan was sober  She said one time he stumbled out on stage, played for 20 minutes, then leaned into the mic and mumbled "Goo' night, folks" and stumbled offstage. Kind of sad actually.

Live '64 and '75 are both great, IMO.
Skulls & Roses definitely.
Skulls & Roses > Europe '72 That's right I said it. JonG: I have the Complete Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics in book form
/lynches you |
Santana(seig heil!)
He's latino, though.
/bob dylan lyrics
I always thought the lyrics from Tangled Up in Blue were pretty cool. "There was music in the cafes of night and revolution in the air"
EDIT: Someone else put the word d0cumentary in your post with a lowercase o, it is turning mine into a 0 for some reason.
Documentary is censored, for some weird reason. |
He's latino, though.
Yeah, I thought that was weird also.. np: Europe '72 You had to bring it up jpj. |

Have you ever heard the version of Like A Rolling Stone off of Self Portrait where he kind of forgets the words? He sings the whole song with so little passion or emotion. It's terrible, but kind of funny. I love Dylan live though, even though sometimes it's a crapshoot on whether he'll show up. Europe 72 is my favorite Dead album, but I haven't heard Skulls and Roses yet. Reckoning is very underrated and probably more country-rockish than even Europe '72 |
jpj, you were the one with the Apocalypse Now avatar right?
Did you know Mickey Hart and Kreutzmann did the percussion for lots of that movie? /random factoid
Yes, that was me, and no, I didn't know that. Speaking of Bill Kreutzmann, I love his drum solo at the beginning of The Other One of Skulls & Roses. |

Incense and Peppermints: Are you going to get a merge with your old account, or no?
Er, no...! Yes... I know I love the Beatles deep down but right now I just feeling no love for them, I only listened to MMT, Revolver and half of the White Album to see if I could re-kindle some Beatles love, no luck. I'll stick with ma Stones for now. Nah, I like have 5 accounts to bounce around with. No reason to merge them really. |
