Go back to your crucial business. You really were pretty close to getting him to admit he's a failure and there is no greater achievement. Reporting for quotes? I'm glad you brought me to my senses or else I might have taken this whole thing a bit too seriously :thumb: |
I do, but theres no point to going to a faster drive. A good 7200RPM drive has been more than enough for 90% of DAW programs for years, and 10K SCSI drives have always been temperamental, required too much cooling, been too noisy, and generally been unworkable. I'm not aware of any suitably high capacity 10K SATA drives beyond raptors and those are only 300GB max anyway, on top of being ludicrously expensive for a very small benefit.
10K drives totally aren't worth it for the minimal performance benefits they offer, and the only reason I even bothered with the raptor i have is because it was on sale and the heavy use an OS drive gets goes some way to justifying the drawbacks, because it results in an entire system feeling more responsive, rather than just reducing load times by a tiny amount on some program that isn't going to be used all the time or even take up the bulk of the workload on the PC.
I was just curious because you have 12GB of ram. Does your maximum usage ever exceed 4GB?
10k HD's are overpriced and not worth it
guess I'm just used to server environment :-/ |

This is what I was thinking too... I was reading his spec list and thinking "wow, great specs, wonder why his monitoring section seems so weak in comparison" until I realized it wasn't for a DAW. It's been a looong time since I built a rig for gaming, are games able to use even half that much? Sweet rig tho man, not much limitation if you decide you'd like to do more than gaming with it. |

Sweet rig tho man, not much limitation if you decide you'd like to do more than gaming with it.
Its a gaming/listening rig, for the most part. I do record with it, but its not exactly a full home studio, its more a 'record guitars and hope to god I can figure out a half decent way of softsynthing this midi track I wrote in guitar pro for the backing' This summer's pet project is to finally spend some good amount of time working my way around cubase and softsynths, learning how to mix and sequence and whatnot, properly. |
The only thing holding you back are (what I presume to be) the gaming speakers. If you can get yourself a pair of monitors, then you can probably do anything with a rig like that... If you're using speakers that sound great for games, you're probably listening through a flattering EQ curve, which means the mixes you make will probably only sound good on your speakers.
You don't want something that makes everything sound good, you want something that lets you know when it sounds bad =P What games are you playing? |

The sound system isn't computer speakers, its all HiFi equipment. Still not reference monitors, and I know where you're coming from on that side of things, but the sound system connected to this thing is pretty freakin hefty. It'll do for basic mixing. I'll need to get somewhat good at doing it, before I consider dropping any hefty chunks of change on studio monitors, because really, my speakers aren't that coloured, and they'll more than suffice for learning the ins n outs. Edit: At the moment, mostly TF2. Played a lot of STALKER CoP before I got back into TF2 though. |

but but but... he made it through Uni! I'd love to hear those speakers man, they look nice. They wouldn't be my first choice for mixing, but with good ears and a firm knowledge of what your speakers are adding to the picture, you can still get a mix that translates well I'm sure. |
So you're on a PGCE course?
The nature of your reaction indicates a very passionate feeling about this. i'm guessing I hit the nail on the head and you post is an attempt at jazzing up the fact that, correct me if i'm wrong, you flunked uni 2 or 3 times, hence why you have "3 or 4 more years of doing it" and why you "worked to afford the things you wanted". This translates to: worked as a till moneky or something until you reapplied or whatever. You don't sound like you're on a teaching course, given that when you are you quickly note you don't study to be a teacher, you train to be one, and you do not, under any circumstances, live like a student while you're training cause they're unbelievably demanding. Much more so than "settling down into a job", cause they dominate your entire life, all day, every day, and every night. So yeah i'm calling bullpoop you're totally jazzing that **** up.
Close but no cigar. I chose to work after A levels because I wanted to pursue my music and perhaps go to uni later on. I don't really see how being older when I do it makes a difference. I'm actually in my first year haha, which is why I said I've got another 3 years. I'm not 'jazzing it up', why should I? To impress you? An angry bloke on the internet? If I had another chance I'd do it the same again; I've had a hell of a life if I do say so myself. |
its real important to have 12gb of ram to listen to music

you do what ye want its all goo
but but but... he made it through Uni!
You're missingthe point, I went straight through uni without any bumps, this other guy "SBT", if you will is on like his 3rd attempt at some mickeymouse uni on some mickey mouse course. |
Squiggsy is a pretty academic guy, who is driven by acheivement.
He doesn't like it when people think they have a more successful life than him when they havn't 'beaten' him academically. Where in fact, people judge their own success based on huge variables. I think that I'm hugely successfull in certain aspects of my life - I'm married and completely in love with an amazing, strong woman. We are independant in t-1 week and could literally do anything. We could move anywhere in the world together if the notion took us. I'm about to turn 23. I see 40-60 years of good times ahead of me. I doubt Squiggs see's that as a big deal because in his eyes my academic studies are wastefull - a 2 year foundation degree in music and a 3 year degree in media, communications and cultural studies. Niether of which are anything to do with a future job I may enjoy. |
Excellent post which is spot on, AG, but I do honestly have to politely disagree with your second paragraph; this whole converstaion was instigated by me jumping on SBT's post, true, but it's not cause of me viewing success/academic acheivments in comparison to mine, it's just what what SBT has said before, and the nature of his post (how he was talking about teaching) was either not true or a huge embellishment of the truth.
I think I come across like a hugely care, especially when I contunue arguements and make personal attack, but i'm actually argueing for the sake of argueing. I don't really mind or care how/what people do (especially strangers on the net) but I love trolling and posting like a wanker (lmao). |
Also makes it that bit more delicious when posters like GuitarBizarre and JCBitB jump in on the action.
|
I don't really know what's going on here; Squirrel you used to be cool what the hell man?
I really don't see why you're so angry with me. I'm not mocking you, I don't think I'm more successful, and this honestly is my first attempt at uni. Whatever man. |
I was never cool.
There is no anger and I don't think you're mocking me. |
Oh ok that clears everything up.

Just eaten sandwiches, preparing for my lesson observation for tomorrow.

I don't know what to eat today.
Perhaps I'll go buy a sandwich. Got some words to write but I'm procrastinating. |
I procrastinate all the ****ing time and i never learn.
Though strangely enough for my visit tomorrow i'm not far off being ready. |
I have to play Belinda Carlisle's "Heaven Is A Place on Earth" today on bass, then again on Thursday, on guitar.
Fun. |
