A minor ninth above? Geez, that has the potential to be pretty grating.
I'm sorry, it was just a 9th above.

The chord itself was an Am9, so I accidentally typed minor. I still had a hard time hearing that 9th.

The guitars all play A5 chords and the vocal melody hopped between A, C, and E while I held the B. It was pretty cool, but there was no way I could get ready for that 9th - it just didn't make any sense without the other vocals.
Even a two octave keyboard is perfect as long as it's polyphonic. Try out playing triads in different keys and singing the chord tones, or pick one note, sing it, and move to a lot of different chords in your hands while practising keeping that note in your head and voice. Other good ones. You can also practise singing harmonies over the notes, play a C, sing an E, and so on. Five or ten minutes a day equals quantum leaps in ability over not too long a time at all.
This.

When I write harmonies, I figure out the vocal melody and just start playing double stops until I find something I like. Then I try to incorporate the root note into the sound to see how (if) it all meshes.

Haha nice. Yeah, minor 9 chords are gorgeous. The B would sound very nice.

Yes, it took the music to a whole new level. That one chord felt so full and epic. I've always liked sus2, add9, and m9 chords. They are so versatile and add....something....to the music. If I knew more about classical theory and whatnot, I could accurately describe it.

funkyhoney 08-17-2009 09:58 AM

Well considering 9ths and 2nds are the same note I'd say you just like extended chords and probably inversions. Suspended chords just have a unique feel to them, I prefer sus4 though.

gaslight 08-17-2009 10:02 AM

Hey Raayliam, when you read this, could I have a try at making you some artwork for your Prototype album? There's a possibility I could come up with something kickin' for you if we can work together a bit on it.

Epidemechanical 08-17-2009 10:12 AM

yeah of course man do you have AIM or MSN?

Same note, yes, but you would probably never hear add2, m2, or sus9 used when describing chord voicings.

Inversions don't really get me off so much. I always find that, especially in the bass registers, non-root notes tend to feel very muddy.

gaslight 08-17-2009 10:23 AM

Yeah man people are very particular about naming their chard voicings.

****ing Alanis Morissette on this dude's account.

*chord.

Lol.

I'm typing with a sprained finger...gimme a break.

Nice ninja edit on Morissette, but what's your beef with her? She's very talented as a vocalist and a decent song-writer (at least vocally).

I know those chords, I used to know a lot of theory when I still actively studied and had to perform things for assessment :p

Epidemechanical 08-17-2009 10:27 AM

dude im lolling at the "chard" typo right now

Haha nothing against her man she's just got a whack accent and I got a funny picture of her belting out "charrrrd" in a song or something. And thanks I did do a SEAL edit.

Yeah, Coywolf sounds too close to Cow-wolf, or like some kind of exotic fish.

gaslight 08-17-2009 10:57 AM

Dire Wolf, that's the ****. Or Dread Wolf.

Raayl I'll hit you up with my thing via myspace in a bit bro, you'll know it's me.

I have an idea.

I think every ballot should come with a simple 2-question quiz for each candidate regarding his/her political standpoint (just to verfy that people actually know what they are voting on). If you get both right, your vote for that candidate counts as a full vote. If only one correct, it's a half vote. If zero, your vote for that candidate was a waste of time and pencil lead.

It'd be amazing to see what would happen if only informed votes counted.

gaslight 08-17-2009 12:25 PM

Better yet, it should analyse your DNA and decide based on that if you're considered adequate to participate.
