I like Dragonlance, I havent had a chance for Forgotten Realms yet - Sci Fi is pretty cool also.

And Memento Mori was pratically made for hack n slash. Its pretty much my favorite Kamelot song.

Slapping Penguin 05-13-2006 12:01 AM

I like Historical Fiction. Personally a fan of Bernad Cornwell at the moment.

Silenius 05-13-2006 12:02 AM

For it's three authors. Tolkien, Robert Jordan and Michael Moorcock.

Riva 05-13-2006 03:13 AM
Sci-fi does rock as well. Dune is amazing.
Heh, if by amazing you mean well-worn conventions couched in cliches.
I could never get into to Dragonlance either. I had heard good things about R.A Salvatore and Drizzt so I borrowed the Dark Elf trilogy from a friend of mine, but he warned me they weren't as good as everyone said. man he was right, those books bored the hell out of me. I'll never understand what people see in R.A Salvatore. Want some good fantasy? Go read G.R.R. Martin's A Song Of Ice And Fire series, phenomenally written political/high fantasy.
Good fantasy is David Eddings, easily.
For it's three authors. Tolkien, Robert Jordan and Michael Moorcock.
Robert "Each book is getting longer" Jordan is alright, heh.

shadow_stalker 05-13-2006 04:16 AM
Only the bad fantasy books are cheesy (like Dragonlance and Forgotten Realms). The good ones have realistic characters.
Hey Dragonlance books rock

anyone ever tried to read the wheel of time books? i almost fell asleep reading the first one. i had to stop readin them, i couldnt read 12+ books written like that

Axis trilogy by Sarah Douglas owns (despite the sheer volume of incest in them)

Riva 05-13-2006 04:18 AM

Yeah, that's what I meant about Robert Jordan, hehe.

So then, I've decided that Therion's best album is Secret Of The Runes.

shadow_stalker 05-13-2006 04:26 AM

I still cant get into Therion, i cant stand their singer

but i didnt like nightwish first time i heard them so maybe i have to hear a certain song (or it will be like blind guardian in which case i will never like them no matter how much i listen)

Riva 05-13-2006 04:29 AM

Which singer? They've had more than Priest's had drummers. :p

Lord Abortion 05-13-2006 04:50 AM

I'm a fan of a load of more Popular Sci-Fi...haven't had chance to explore the genre much, really.

Dune is great.

Iron Bars 05-13-2006 05:34 AM
Go read G.R.R. Martin's A Song Of Ice And Fire series, phenomenally written political/high fantasy.
Have you ever read anything by Steven Erikson (Malazen tale of the fallen)? Most people who like Martin can apreciate him too.

Powermetal and Fantasy go very wel together for me anyway (black metal too for some books).

shadow_stalker 05-13-2006 06:25 AM
Which singer? They've had more than Priest's had drummers. :p
no idea, you posted some songs of their a week or so ago, that singer(s)

Txus 05-13-2006 07:16 AM

Oh noes!

I think their best album is "Theli" or "Lemuria" I really can't decide.

Have you heard their DM era?

Apocalyptic Raids 05-13-2006 07:17 AM

I think he made a sampler of their DM material.

If not, he's a fanboy anyway so he should have :D

Lord Abortion 05-13-2006 07:18 AM

Damn I love the flash in your avatar, Txus.

I remember once I had it on for half an hour and sat entranced watching it:p

NP-Dungeon-Against the wind

Txus 05-13-2006 07:25 AM

Yeah it's really nice to look at it, but Half an hour?......:p

I think Therion's DM era was really good my only complain have to be those vocals. ....Of Darkness is an amazing album.

NP: Therion - Uhtark Runa

Iron Bars 05-13-2006 07:40 AM

Best Therion album for me also Secret of the runes seconded by Lemura or Vovin. I'm not to familiar with their dm days but from what I've heard I'm very glad they started making more symphonic material.

Watches Txus avatar.

Txus 05-13-2006 07:45 AM

Vovin contains my favorite Therion song at the moment "The Rise Of Sodom And Gomorrah". I think Secret Of The Runes is also great....Asgard

Every Therion release is godly.

Iron Bars 05-13-2006 08:42 AM

The rise of sodom and gomorrah was the first song they played when I saw them live so it has a special place just for that. What I like so much about Secret of the runes is that its so diverse.

Shattered_Future 05-13-2006 10:15 AM

I'm still a Lemuria fanboy. Typhon, An Arrow From The Sun...classics.

Riva 05-13-2006 08:53 PM

I wish they would tour to Australia. :(

Midgard makes the album for me.
Well, John, the first three albums were sort of Death Metal, then with Lepaca Kliffoth they started becoming more symphonic, and their latest efforts are very much power metal.
Yes, it and Beyond Sanctorum are brilliant. Good song choice, Nick.

NP-Dungeon-Against the wind
I'm still trying to figure out the movie. I swear I've seen it. Good song.
I think he made a sampler of their DM material.

Indeed I am!
Oh noes!

Theli is quite good. Probably the first one that really draws people in.

Well, songs like The Wings Of The Hydra off of Lepaca Kliffoth have some great harsh vocals. But yeah, compared to a lot of death metal vocals, they aren't anything special.
no idea, you posted some songs of their a week or so ago, that singer(s)
There are two non-classical singers on the album, Sirius B, that I showed you. The only one you would have heard is the one that I like a bit better, actually. :p
I'm still a Lemuria fanboy. Typhon, An Arrow From The Sun...classics.
I'd rate Lemuria as maybe 3rd or 4th.

Lord Abortion 05-15-2006 01:58 AM

Never managed to Download that Therion...

shadow_stalker 05-15-2006 04:02 AM

wow riva that was an uber amount of comments and quotes

on a different note 'Freedom call' have become one of my favourite bands after a weekend of listening to them none stop

EDIT: i just bought Freedom call's 'the circle of life' album and Sonata's 'for the sake of revenge' cd/dvd

Riva 05-15-2006 05:00 AM

I missed out on the biggest Therion conversation in the thread, hehe. I had to make up for it.

Lord Abortion 05-15-2006 07:53 AM

What's the sonata one like, Titch?

Iron Bars 05-15-2006 09:04 AM
I wish they would tour to Australia. :(
I've seen them live twice now and their one of the top bands I've ever seen. The way they worked in all the vocal lines into the show was brilliant (and the lead vocalist does a mean impression of King Diamond).

Trev 05-15-2006 09:40 AM

I have every Freedom Call album apart from that.. What's it like?

For The Sake of Revenge is a pretty good live album.

Nepenthe 05-15-2006 02:05 PM

Damn, I've just listened to Lethal for the first time. They are very good, it's a shame they split up.

NP: Lethal - Arrival

Lefty 05-15-2006 04:06 PM

I don't know how your views on self-promotion are, but I thought this may fit in better here than in the Death Heads thread.

http://www.myspace.com/sunsetridersband

Norwegian Western and soundtrack inspired heavy metal. Demo will be out soon.

Nepenthe 05-15-2006 04:08 PM

I didn't hear any mariachi or Latin influences at all when I listened earlier, just sounded like regular old power metal to me. Very good power metal at that.

Tyler 05-15-2006 04:09 PM

Eh, usually self promotion sticks to Audio Arena and the Bands of MX thread (http://www.sputnikmusic.com/forums/showthread.php?t=458897)
