I thought only n00bs hate rap now.
Seeing that most regulars like atleast one rapper/rap band.
Yeah but I'm a rap n00b because I only listen to mainstream rap and am too lazy to find underground stuff :) |
I knew all of them minus Neil Young, didn't figure you for a big Neil fan. Speaking of which would people consider Harvest to be one of his better albums's? I want to get a friend into Neil but I don't know what album is generally considered his best.
I think Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere would be a great one for getting a friend interested, assuming they are into rock. Anyone who likes rock even just a little bit should love EKTIN. Harvest is a great one for his folkier songs. Illmatic, do you have any rap that you think I would like? You seem to listen to a lot of rap, so I figure you would have lots of different types of rap to offer a guy like me. I've heard rap that I've really liked on my community radio station, but it's all local and underground bands and I can never find albums by them or I just forget their names. edit - And I've been teaching a lot of my students (Sittin' on) The Dock of the Bay lately, it's so much fun to play along with the CD...although half my students can't play a B chord fast enough. That song has the most amazing bridge type part to it. |

What type of stuff are you looking for? Grateful Dead
The Beatles The Pogues Ry Cooder Peter Tosh Lee "Scratch" Perry |
1) Bob Dylan
2) Pink Floyd 3) Jimi Hendrix 4) Cream (or any band with Clapton in it) 5) The Beatles 6) The Who |

I suppose more "poetic" guys than what you would normally hear from mainstream rappers like Eminem or 50 Cent (which is about half the rap I am familiar with). Cool backing music would definitely be a bonus cool, like interesting beats or concepts for background music. A lot of the rap that I have liked was more "trippy" than the usual...although I think that word is a little cliche and overused and may not be a helpful descriptor. I'll download anything you want to send me and I'll see if I like it. I sometimes start singing during lessons when we are playing along to songs. It usually doesn't turn out so great. Especially to someone like Otis. I can always hear the guy singing who teaches guitar in the room right next to me, it's pretty funny. He's got a soft highpitched sorta voice. Imagine Roger Waters singing falsetto in his whispery voice. |

Actually, Eminem has written some really good stuff (check out "Stan" if you don't believe me) I'll throw some rappers out there, if you want specific song recommendations than ask: Nas 2Pac (I'm wavering on this one...he's kind of a cliche suggestion, you probably wouldn't like most of his materal but you could appreciate some of his more poetic stuff. besides, most of his beats sound very dated) Outkast The Roots People Under the Stairs A Tribe Called Quest Common Talib Kweli Mos Def (also, Black Star) Jurassic 5 (I don't like them all that much but you probably would...along those lines, Atmosphere, Blackalicious, Dilated Peoples, a lot of those underground acts that I'm not crazy about) Slum Village
I sometimes start singing during lessons when we are playing along to songs. 1. The Beatles
2. Pink Floyd 3. Cream 4. The Doors 5. Jimi Hendrix and bands 6. Jeff Beck Honorable mentions include Neil Young, Blind Faith, The Band, and Frank Zappa. |
Illmatic, out of the artists/groups you mentioned I've only heard 2Pac and Outkast. I've liked what I've heard from 2Pac and I'm pretty sure I've liked most of Outkasts stuff. I'm pretty open to anything. If there's anything you have that would be considered more experimental and "out of the ordinary" I wouldn't mind that. If you don't mind uploading an album, maybe some other people would wanna hear it too. I don't wanna make you upload an album just for me though.

'moon what are The Pogues like? I see you and EMH talking about them, I'd like to check 'em out.
Thanks for the GD. |
Celtic-Punk
Celtic-Rock Celtic-Folk Other stuff Kind of like Flogging Molly, but more versatile and original (IMO) |
'moon what are The Pogues like? I see you and EMH talking about them, I'd like to check 'em out.
Thanks for the GD.
The Pogues are basically '80s punk rock similar to The Clash, injected with dark humour and traditional Irish folk music. I believe banjos are involved. |
Eh. I like Flogging Molly. I should check 'em out.
Haha, I looked at that R&Mer of the Month, and my name is in the list. That's funny. |

Just because you've never made a thread doesn't necessarily mean you are helpful in every thread you post in. IMO 1 good thread < a lot of helpful posts, although most people overlook that. |
Hm, top six favorite bands (this changes around all the time, except the top two.)
1. Pink Floyd 2. The Who 3. Cream 4. The Doors 5. Iron Maiden 6. Deep Purple After that I'd have Bob Dylan, Neil Young, The Beatles, Black Sabbath, The Grateful Dead, The Allmen Brothers, Yes, Rush, and a million other bands I don't want to take the time to type up. In other news, VU's Loaded is totally awesome. Definitly on par with VU and Nicko. |
Classic Rock is amazing stuff. im 19 and the stuff is older than i am but i still love it. heres some of the stuff i listen to
AC/DC Led Zepplin Eric Clapton Fleetwood Mac Aerosmith Pink Floyd The Doors Lynard Skynard The Rolling Stones The Beatles Toto The Who The Guess Who Van Halen ZZ Top |
Toto
I haven't heard of them. What are they like? Welcome, btw. |
Hahaha! I would never have thought I'd see Toto brought up in this thread. Let's leave it at that.
|
Eww, Toto.
Poco>Toto Total opposites anyway. |
Poco>Toto
I've heard about my dad/aunt/uncle talk about them both. Whenever one is brought up the other is because my aunt gets them mixed up. I've never heard either one them though. |
Right now it would probably be
1. The Who 2. Pink Floyd 3. The Beatles 4. Notorious B.I.G. 5. Rage Against The Machine 6. Sonic Youth But It'd be a little different if I made the list to be in general |
toto's drummer is the ****. he's real good. jeff porcaro is great. and steve lukather's a monster guitarist. he toured with jeff beck.
|
Classic rock:
1) Pink Floyd 2) Led Zeppelin 3) The Grateful Dead 4) The Beatles 5) The Who 6) Deep Purple/Lynyrd Skynyrd/Allman Brothers (probably higher, but I haven't heard enough :-/ ) Modern rock: 1) The Lost Trailers 2) Dave Matthews Band 3) Counting Crows 4) Red Hot Chili Peppers 5) idk... And what the heck, the rap I can listen to without killing myself The Roots De La Soul N.W.A Tupac Kanye West |
Toto does have talent in terms of playing ability, but their sound is polished to the point where I just want to throw up. And I've yet to actually hear a song I like by them.
That's actually just going by the one album I have by them (dad's hand-me-down vinyl). |
duuuude. my last fm isnt working and im freaking ouuuuut.
|
Heh, I have almost listened to more Dead then Minutemen. Which is amazing, because Minutemen are all 1-3 minute songs.
:o I bet I've listened to over 200 Dead songs this week. Black-Throated Wind is so good live. Weir's vocals live>studio. |
I'll upload After the Goldrush. It got me into Neil. Good mix of acoustic folk and then rock like Southern Man.
Ah nah thats alright I have it already I'm was just trying to think of a good album to get him started since I basically think they all are good.
ELO* ;-) And way to go check out my last fm, haha. I think I can safely say Trans-Siberian Orchestra is up there in my favorite bands now.
Oh shi :S typo! Hey, I didn't need to check the Last.fm for anything except Pink Floyd and George Harrison the rest I knew.
Actually, Eminem has written some really good stuff (check out "Stan" if you don't believe me)
Eminem is my favorite rapper. :) The Eminem Show is excellent, but anything after that is not even good. Toto is just horrible from what I've heard. I heard like their greatest hits and I was done.
6. Sonic Youth
Yay! I just gave my friend Goo and I haven't talked to him but I heard he was raving about it the other day. They are excellent, the lady girl in the band was my secound choice for avatar. |
I don't mind Eminem at all. He has great flow and a great sense of humor. The problem are his stupid serious, emotional songs. He sacrifices lightning fast rhymes and catchy beats for shouted, angsty lyrics. Despite their usual important meaning, I find them too dreary.
|
I used to like Eminem back in the day, but then I just altogether stopped listening to rap. Now all I listen to is a little 36 Mafia every now and then.
Jacaranda, who the hell is that in your avatar? It looks like Kirsten Dunst dressed up like a clown. |
