No, there are some VERY good black metal bands.
Tell me more about these amazing atmospheres that can be created by good black metal bands. Im going to honestly be opened minded here. Is the main thing because you cant get similiar atmospheres in other types of music or something?

Maggot Dream 10-25-2006 10:41 PM
no , stupid.

I just can't fathom why anyone would like such a aural repulsive type of music.

Other than they fanboyism and f.ag cheesy image , I am trying to understand why anyone would like it.

There has to be some really good redeeming qualities to overcome the bad points.

As of yet im not convinced , maybe im dumb but I cant comprehend any good quality of the music
Have you actually listened to enough of the music to make that judgement?

TTTSNB 10-25-2006 10:42 PM

No, particularly, other types of music, especially classical, electronic music have been successful in creating certain similar atmiospheres. I think the real thing is that I enjoy the particular sound of the music in addition to the atmosphere. Also, black metal often uses folk elements, which I find very interesting.

Name 5 black metal bands you have heard more than 3 songs from.

White Riot! 10-25-2006 10:50 PM

Immortal
Emporer
Burzum
Azaghal
Venom?

Panopticon 10-25-2006 10:52 PM

so now that you've named 5 bands that you've heard...name the total number of black metal bands in existence (i'll let you estimate)

TTTSNB 10-25-2006 10:55 PM
Immortal
Emporer
Burzum
Azaghal
Venom?
Pretty much the most well-known black metal bands with the exception of Azaghal. I certainly wouldn't call Emperor, Burzum, Venom terrible, they aren't even non-melodic or awful sounding by most anyone's standard's, with the exception of you. I can understand why one wouldn't like these bands, but they aren't noise, or as you put it "an aurally repulsive genre of music"
Shpongle is probably my favorite electronica project. Hallucinogen and Astral Projection are great too.

Oh, and Talvin Singh. He's different, but still awesome.
Fuck yea! Shpongle, astral projection, and hallucinogen are all grade A!

Hmm... I'm trying to think of some of my fav. electronica bands, usually I just listen to it all the time like elevator music now, just keep it runnin on my pandora 24/7.

Maggot Dream 10-25-2006 10:59 PM

Dude, Bill Laswell is amazing. Have you heard Praxis?

If not, get some now. It'll blow you away.

Sunshine 10-25-2006 10:59 PM

So...dearest Stronghold.

Whatever do you do when you have drummer's block?

TTTSNB 10-25-2006 10:59 PM

^ Actually no, could you send me some of their stuff? I'm always up for new bands.

Aaron 10-25-2006 10:59 PM

Pendulum FTW!

White Riot! 10-25-2006 10:59 PM

Praxis is sort of a funk-metal supergroup. Buckethead, Bill Laswell, Bernie Worrell, Brain, and Bootsy Collins.

Unfortunately, I don't actually have any of their albums. I've streamed all their stuff, and it's amazing, but it's really hard to find an actual copy. I'm working on torrenting Transmutation (Mutatis Mutandis), which is probably their best album. I have a couple great songs I could send you, but otherwise I'll let you know when I have the full album.

Until then, I can send you some Buckethead or something, as I have all his albums.

EDIT: Oh, damn. That wasn't directed at me.

Do you just not want to drum as much nowadays? Or having a hard time thinking of something new?

Ah, alright, thanks man. Great band, love the symphonic elements and the guitar riffing.

Aaron 10-25-2006 11:15 PM

Does anyone else like Gerling?

Win A Rabbit 10-25-2006 11:19 PM

I can't decide if I like Protest The Hero or not. Hmm... I guess I'll have to listen to them again to make an opinion.

I'm having a hard time thinking of anything ><

For lessons, my instructor's been burning me the Turn It Up And Lay It Down CDs, and (obviously) he wants me to groove to the songs.

But when I try, absolutely nothing comes to me.

Like. Absolutely nothing at all.

You need creative input. Listen to anything and everything funk, take what ideas you like, slowly implement them or variants of them into your own playing.

Win A Rabbit 10-26-2006 12:08 AM

I haven't played my drums in a week. :upset:

This is turning out to be a terrible time for my playing.

I've been putting alot of time into my guitar playing though, which has been getting consistently better. That's a positive. May be joining a band soon as a guitarist.

hey whats up...the names is josh and i've been playing drums for a year. i'm 19...
some days i think i'm getting better, but fu**...i don't have speed for the ghost peddle..
i can get the beats down... if i lesten to it over and over again..only with one kick..
but what should i do about double bass, whats the excersise you all use?

oh another question does a drummer progress further practiceing by himself or with a band....???

sexual_harassment_panda 10-26-2006 03:02 AM

Hey there Josh, Im a pandabear!!

I've lived in Wisconsin when i was younger, I lived i a place called Appleton. Do you know it?

But with doublekick jsut remember to start up slowly and build ypu your control and speed by starting with lower tempos. That's the only way to do it.

And a drummer progeresses (right word?) by both practising by himself and playing with a band. I say a drummer should first practise by himself until he can reach a level where he can keep a steady beat and then go on with a band.
oh another question does a drummer progress further practiceing by himself or with a band....???
moreso with a band. Except in my case, where my skill is so far ahead of my bandmates that I never advance.

sexual_harassment_panda 10-26-2006 03:08 AM

oh yeah. Yesterday during band practise I cracked my Evans coated g1. It lasted almost a good 7 months. Anyway, i had my old remo emperor x lying around and I slapped it on, and i have to admit. It makes my snare sounds better than 1 ply evans g1! I was suprised how good my ****ty pearl export snare sounded with the emperor x on it. And the head is used and very old too!

But anyway, when i go get new heads for my toms I'm gonna pick up a cs or evans powercenter or what ever they are called. I think I also should get a new bassreso since my current has a small crack in it....i dropped a mic on the hole when micing drums...the hole was homemade and not anywhere near round so it got ****ed up. FAWK! I'm gonna be so friggen poor after all the heads. And I'm turning 18 in two weeks so I need drinking money. Damnit! I better get alot of birthday money.

akaTheJosh 10-26-2006 03:12 AM

sexual harassment panda from the land of forgotten mascots, yes i know where appleton is...evil..evil place with stuck up people...
and thanks for correnting me...makes me feel smart for some reason..
so how long has everyone been playing...

some jive turkey 10-26-2006 03:14 AM

I think a drummer progresses much more by practicing by himself.

I call practicing with a band "rehearsing", so there is a cognitive distinction between the two.

Rehearsing is just learning songs with a group of people.
Practicing is skill-building and learning how to play your instrument.

Does appleton suck ***?

We moved there when i was 4 and then back to finland when i was 6. I don't remember too much about the place. Except that there was a Toys 'r' Us there and every month i got some money and i spent it on a Batman figure or something related to batman.

And I've hjad the drums for 5 years, took lessons for half a year and then quit the drums for a few yaers. Now I've really been playing drums again 2½-3 years. I also play in three active bands. One hardcore band, one rock band and one jam/cover/rock band. Life is good.
