I normally go on the internet when I get home from drinking.

cobert 12-22-2009 05:18 PM

I'm catching up on all of the "Good" movies from 2008.

How the **** did anyone think Slumdog Millionaire was worthy of all that praise? Absolutely mediocre movie. It felt poorly made, the casting was shallow, and I simply didn't buy that Jamal was in love with that girl. And The Curious Case of Benjamin Button wasn't worthy of praise either. I'd go as far as to call it bad, actually. The idea of aging backwards is nothing but a gimmick because they didn't really use it to add to the drama. Revolutionary Road was good, and does a good job of showing people turning cold and falling into a trap they both promised they would never be a part of. The Wrestler has the most heart of any of them and is probably the most well acted. I almost teared up in the final scenes. It didn't blow me away, but I don't see how so many people looked over this and ran out to see Slumdog Millionaire. Both are about persistence for love, but Slumdog's love seems manufactured while the love in The Wrestler is heartbreaking and humble. Wrestling is all Randy has, and it's slipping away with age. The Dark Knight deserves a nod, but I felt like it was too long and The Joker, as a character, isn't really as complex as everyone thinks he is (people that love this movie will shout me down and say "no, he's all about calculated chaos!" or "he lies to create confusion!" but I'm convinced it's just poor writing and a weak character with a good performance attached).

I still need to see Doubt, The Reader, Frost/Nixon, and whatever other bullpoop I didn't see yet.

Gnarmageddon 12-22-2009 06:50 PM

i didn't like doubt much

cbmartinez 12-22-2009 06:59 PM

i think i enjoyed milk more than any other movie i saw that year (cause im gay), though no country was great.

Liebensaft 12-22-2009 07:09 PM

No Country For Old Men is more enjoyable to watch than about 90-95% of movies.

cobert 12-22-2009 08:28 PM

Oooh, forgot about Milk. I need to see that one too. I really want to see Doubt because I love Philip Seymour Hoffman.

No Country For Old Men was 2007.

No Country For Old Men rivals Mulholland Dr. as my favorite movie. It's absolutely perfect.

Liebensaft 12-22-2009 08:54 PM

Yeah, I was gonna use a higher percentage, like 95-98%, because that's definitely more accurate. Didn't wanna make it sounds like I can't appreciate a flick though.

RouteOne 12-22-2009 09:42 PM

No country for old men was epic.

Read the book sometime, its just as good and has parts in it that the movie didn't show.

Gnarmageddon 12-22-2009 10:13 PM

milk was awesome

to cob:

and i thought the same thing about doubt because i love PSH, but i just wasn't feeling the whole setting of the movie, i dunno it just bothered me and i didn't like it.

but if you haven't seen synecdoche, new york, do that.

I just can't pick up fiction.

But related to reading: I just started Lies My Teachers Told Me. Great book, it's like A People's History of the United States, except the motivation for writing isn't political. Where Howard Zinn used A People's History as a means to show the dark side of America and speak up for the oppressed, James Loewen uses revision to explain how high school history textbooks are frequently incorrect, and how whitewashing history doesn't just make people blind to social realities, but it actually makes history both boring and dishonest. American History class isn't used to teach history, it's used to instill values. I read the first 60 pages last night, I can tell this is going to be a good read.

Bummer.
but if you haven't seen synecdoche, new york, do that.
It's on my long list of movies to watch.

Iluvatar 12-22-2009 11:56 PM

the best movie of 2008 was Let the Right One In, watch it.

cbmartinez 12-23-2009 01:00 AM

wanna see that really bad, my roommate loved it, but number one on my list right now is lars von trier's anti-christ

cobert 12-23-2009 02:33 AM

Couldn't finish that movie because I had work and I only had it for a day on digital cable. Apparently I shut it off just before it got really, really twisted. I'll end up watching it again someday.

cbmartinez 12-23-2009 11:52 AM

Iluvatar 12-23-2009 12:19 PM

anti christ was pretty good but it wasnt as fully realized as i wanted it to be. eh.

Gnarmageddon 12-23-2009 04:20 PM

i was looking forward to it and then realized it was made to be some sort of p'ornographic shock cinema and i lost interest.

Iluvatar 12-23-2009 09:08 PM

the acting is really solid but the screenplay ended up being way too ****ing retarded

chaos reigns? suck my dick

cobert 12-23-2009 09:22 PM

I didn't particularly enjoy the first half of the movie that I saw.

whitesquares 12-24-2009 04:46 PM
i think i enjoyed milk more than any other movie i saw that year (cause im gay), though no country was great.
Milk was an absolutely incredible movie. It made me want to get up and actually DO something.

But I didn't.

I loved No Country. Just curious, though; has anyone seen There Will be Blood? I heard it's similar to No Country and am wondering if it's any good. I don't watch many movies. It's a bad habit.

cbmartinez 12-24-2009 04:51 PM

there will be blood is incredible

cobert 12-24-2009 05:13 PM

It's similar because it's dark and from the same year. I need to watch it again.

kitsch 12-24-2009 06:38 PM

grades were posted today for the semester, i got the first 4.0 of my life

Gnarmageddon 12-24-2009 07:02 PM

i got a 3.525 for the semester. not bad, considering i pretty much blew off everything.

this is my sophomore year. i think my total gpa is 3.09 something.

cbmartinez 12-24-2009 07:29 PM

two A's, an A- and then a C- in french, sucks cause the french grade totally skewed my gpa

cobert 12-24-2009 11:50 PM

I usually get A's and B's and then usually something absolutely terrible in another class that ****s me. I think my cumulative GPA right now is just over a 3.
