i was looking through the tabs of "the moor", i was using a power tab so its was well put together tab, and i could hear it also, and that really raised my respect for opeth, on how complicated there songs are. truly a amazing band

EverytimeIBodom 09-24-2005 03:56 PM
Same. When I listen to any song from that album, it just makes me want to listen to heavier Opeth. :D
Well I don't really know any other Opeth, I'd only heard of em till I downloaded the album.

Oni Link 09-24-2005 04:37 PM

I consider myself a huge Opeth fan, and Ghost Reveries is my favorite album. Followed by BLP and Still Life. Man I can't get enough of Ghost of Perdition. Discuss!
I just sing along to the clean parts. NOOOoooooooo growling for me....I love how it sounds, but if you try to do that without knowing what you're doing, you'll be talking through a voicebox in no time.
It takes a while to get used to growling, if you do it too often at first you can injure your vocal chords. Now I do it all the time, but only when I'm alone in my car. :p People give me funny looks when I'm driving though. :upset:

I've never understood how people can make those noises. I always thought it was some inborn ability, like wiggling your ears or whatever.

Supposively, Mikael uses what he calls a "compressor" in his throat to growl. I have no idea what that means, heh. But it's something most people could probably do if they worked on it hard enough.

Special Brew 09-24-2005 07:24 PM

I wish I could sing or growl or scream. I can't do anything vocal, and I'm too shy to practice because people are always at my house. I'll just stick with guitar I guess.

I was planning on installing a loudspeaker in my car (oh so much fun scaring the shit out of people with loud noises, saying hi to girls, etc.), maybe I could show some elderly people and small children my growling skillz with it as well. :D

Sure, why not? I'll ask.

I always like to scream and growl along to music. I don't actually do it loudly, pretty quietly actually. But, my throat will be sore for like the next 2 days. If I just keep disregarding the soreness, will I eventually be able to do this a lot, without any consequences?

ambush 09-24-2005 10:33 PM

Just do it in moderation at first, think of it as a stretch. If you try to touch your toes right away you'll probably tear a muscle, kinda the same concept here.

Dude3 09-24-2005 10:44 PM

Alrighty, sounds cool. I've really irritated my throat a few times.

Namely me trying to sing Soundgarden's "Jesus Christ Pose". Good times, good times.

If you smoke, I suggest quit.

Luckily, I don't. And never will.

That's awesome. I recently quit after 16 years, haven't smoked a cigarette in almost 2 years now. It really opened up my vocals. :D

I've been practicing with Deliverance a lot lately. It's so hard to even come close to the tone Mikael hits. He's truly gifted in a LOT of areas. :)

Det_Nosnip 09-24-2005 11:14 PM
I do too :D.

But still:

NP: Korn - Chi... you need to shake things up a little, keep your tastes balanced.
 Always pushing the Korn....

I think you can find a better counterbalance to Opeth than that! I mean...if the counterbalance you're looking for is quality of the music, then Korn works great, but I wouldn't throw a "musical diversity" party for enjoying both if I were you. :p

That is my absolute favorite line. Ever.

epihasi 09-25-2005 02:29 AM

Can anyone here growl along with "the master's apprentices"? If yes, you've earned the most respect I can give. Although, I'd give just as much respect, if anyone could growl with "Serenity painted Death". God, does that song kick azz...

paranoid923 09-25-2005 10:16 AM

Man I wish I could do that. I don't think my voice is low enough though.

On a side note: My friends and I went to Hot Topic yesterday to find a chain for my friend's brother. While we were in there we saw that they were selling Opeth cds. Is this good or bad in your opinion?

Yeah definately, I like it when he growls ''death'' it's quick and deadly.

They've been selling Opeth merch for a long time. I saw a Blackwater Park shirt there ages ago, but didn't have the cash to get it. I have no problem with Hot Topic, other than the fact that they are overpriced. People try too hard to be "tr00", "gr1m" and such crap. Hot Topic isn't a bad store. Every store has idiots that shop there, so there is no point in singling out Hot Topic. I get shirts there sometimes, and a wristband or two. I like their pants actually, but I'm not to keen on spending $50+ for a pair of pants.

Uhh... I'm half asleep so I forgot what my point was.

Your point was that Opeth is Opeth no matter how crappy the clientele of a store which stocks their albums.

Hot Topic carries some good merchandise, but they're become too corperate, and really dumb people think shopping there automatically makes them cool.
