I can see Piper being awesome, but I wouldn't expect WYWH. Well, besides Shine On, and Welcome to the Machine would probably be pretty badass.
Wish You Were Here and Piper At The Gates Of Dawn kick arse on good quality headphones.
The only thing I drive music into my ears with at my house are my Sennheisers. Best investment I've ever made. :thumb: |

Have A Cigar sounds awesome, and the sample that introduces Wish You Were Here sounds excellently creepy. |
I've distanced myself from WYWH over time, partly because of Have A Cigar and the title track, and partly because it sounds too much like a Gilmour album for me.
|
Why because of Have A Cigar and Wish You Were Here?
|
They don't really do it for me. Have A Cigar is okay, but Wish You Were Here hits me as boring, and both songs in succession just don't work for me.
|
Strange fellow.
I can see the Gilmour aspect though, especially with Shine On You Crazy Diamond bookending the album. |
I mean, when I say that I distance myself from such an album, I don't mean I hate it; far from that. It's just not as great as I once thought it to be.
|
It's funny you mention that, saying it sounds like a Gilmour album, because that's a good point. Especially when it is considered one of the Waters dominated albums.
Most people I ask either say Time or Money are their favorite song off Darkside.
breathe is mine. speaking of darkside, what an amazing album, but also the most overrated album of ALL TIME. proof being a million kids at my school that have only heard one floyd song (sometimes its a song not even on that album) but wear the ****ing shirt. you dont see anyone wearing a piper shirt do you? nope. lets all jump on the bandwagon. and piper is their best cd hands down. |
It does have a pretty cool cover though - probably the reason they where the shirt :p

It was during the time when Waters started his domination of the band, but the sound is very Gilmour. However, you can see that Gilmour sound rapidly disappear over the next three albums they made, and then when you have A Momentary Lapse Of Reason right after The Final Cut (the quintessential Waters Pink Floyd album), then you finally have a reference for Gilmour. I like Gilmour and Waters very much, and this is why Dark Side of The Moon is a constant in my list of favorite Floyd albums; not because it's the best selling album of all-time (because just because an album sells, doesn't mean it's good) but because it's the perfect balance of all of the band members. |

It isn't the most overrated album of all time at all. In fact, I'd say its one of the few albums with through the roof hype, and exposure, that actually deserves every bit of it. After seriously listening to PF for 3 years, I can conclude that Darkside has gotten all the attention it does because it deserves it. Every track is either an amazing song, or is beneficial to the point of the album itself. And no, I don't like all the posers with the shirts either, but for every one of them, there are 10 real PF fans. |

I always feel like Wright and Gilmour dominated that album. They really made almost all the music on it. The Waters dominated songs on that album are Have A Cigar and Welcome To The Machine. |
Yes I agree that it is very Gilmour dominated, but I hadn't really given it much thought. Althought I must say I love Welcome To The Machine, not as good as Shine On but bloody close.

the open chord of Welcome to the Machine still drives chills down my spine.

Its easily one of the most haunting songs ever recorded. I don't think I could perform it live or something without having some kind of emotional reaction to it. |

No, not really. There are of course some popular examples that would be more haunting (The Downward Spiral comes to mind), but a not so recognized example might be Karel Husa's Music For Prague 1968 or maybe even Fred Katz's rendition of Foggy Foggy Dew. Hell, there are other Floyd songs more haunting (The Trial comes to mind, of course). |

Eh, I should have been more specific. As far as rock music is concerned it is. Of course there are some compositions that are much more haunting, but as far as music that a majority of people listen to (ie, the Wish You Were Here album), its one of the more haunting pieces they're ever going to hear. But in general your right, theres much more that surpass it. |
The Downward Spiral is pretty passe from what I remember, but that's probably because I don't like NIN.
|
the only thing that Trent Reznor did that was anygood was "Hurt" even his collbartion with Bowie was nothing special.

Agreed, and Johnny Cash's cover was better than the original anyway. |
I put more emphasis on the other two examples because of Nine Inch Nails isn't a favorite of mine either.
|
lol, well to be fair you cannot compare Trent Reznors verson to Johnny Cashs'
|
Damn, that solo on Fad Old Sun live from the Royal Albert Hall(David Gilmour dvd) is soooooooooo great. One of the best Gilmour solo's I've heard.
|
The original is better than the Cash version.
|
In terms of haunting music Lou Reed's Berlin album
And the Final Cut seeing as this is a floyd thread. Specifically the Gunner's dream. Or Ballad of Bill Hubbard from Amused to Death |
The Final Cut has really grown on me. I used to not like it much but now I'd say it's one of my favorite Floyd albums.
|
I recently listened to a song Roger Waters wrote for Marianne Faithful called Incarceration of a Flower Child. It starts with "Do you remember me, how we used to be..." just like in "Your Possible Pasts" from the Final Cut.
