It's not even really that, either. Metal just gets really boring when you notice a constant generic formula that's repeated in many bands, and then you're forced to listen to the more classic ones in which get boring because you've listened to them so much.

What's worse is when you get criticized for liking things that add outside elements to that formula, and get called a poser.

Happens with pretty much every genre, though. I've basically gone through phases with everything and it's the best when you can listen to pretty much anything whenever and have it "work". The only real problem is then you get criticized for thinking "everything sucks".

Yeah. When you're new to it you kinda think "but there are those various sub-genres which are all different this could keep me occupied for ages!" but once you realise so many bands just want to sound like someone else, it's a bummer. I mean that's cool if you just wanted to listen to that style you really like, and there's something comforting about it, but in the end I don't think it's very satisfying. That's what I found, anyway.

Most people in the world go through band phases

Unique stuff is awesome, but generic stuff is awesome too!

I prefer listening to boring simple metal because it's not memorable to get sick of. Really memorable riffs are too predictable and you get tired of it quickly.
