 Lighten up a bit, I'm a classic rock reg. I'm here for a reason, I like classic rock.

Broken Arrow 01-16-2006 05:43 PM

Let's discuss Spirit.

I have

Spirit on viynl and Mp3
Clear on viynl
The 12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus on CD

All of them are very good, but I really need to listen to Clear a couple more times. It was pretty awesome though.

jpj 01-16-2006 05:51 PM

The latter part of Behind Blue Eyes is great, but the beginning is overly meh.

So today I was at Best Buy, first I was gonna buy Weather Report-8:30, then I saw Muddy Waters Live at Newport, however, I decided to take a chance get get that Sufjan Stevens album everyone has their panties in a bunch about.

Upon first listen I must say it is quite good. The string and brass arrangements are beautiful, the melodies are catchy, and something about his lyrical style really appeals to me. The song "John Wayne Gacy, Jr." sent chills down my spine. Right now I'm finishing listening to the C&C album...

To make up for all the un-classic rockness I listened to Skull & Roses and Wired on the way down to see brother at college.

I have s/t and The 12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus on burnt discs and The Family That Plays Together on mp3. I haven't listened to any of them in awhile now, but I think TFTPT is my favorite.

robo2448 01-16-2006 05:52 PM

I have 12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus, Spirit, and The Family that Plays Together on mp3. All from Lunch I think. Great stuff. I'm going to go with When I Touch You as my favorite Spirit song right now.

I should buy some of their stuff.

np- Tombstone Blues (Michael Bloomfield owns)

Edit- I like Behind Blue Eyes. A little overrated but still good.

Live at Newport is amazing. Definately his best album.:smash:

I'll make sure to check it out next time around than.

The only problem I have with Illinois is its length which seems to be the case with some other new albums. They just keep getting longer.

I think Behind Blue Eyes is great

Anyways, I've been listenin to a lot of the Floyd's early stuff I really like Meddle. It's really different than all the other things because four of the songs on the album are mostly acoustic.
Also, i'd say that Sgt Peppers is one of my favorite Beatles albums and Revolver comes in second. I'm going to get Rubber Soul soon so I'm looking forward to that.

Speaking of Limp Bizkit, I found out today that they made a version of Wish You Were Here and I tried playing the tab, but it just didn't sound right. Wish You Were Here when Pink Floyd played it at Live 8 was awesome though.

Glitterati 01-16-2006 06:45 PM

Limp Bizkit in classic rock? Ew. :(

Nice....what Pogues and SDRE have you been listening to?
On the topic of radio: Anyone going to listen to Little Steven's underground garage tonight? That's always a good radio show.

(+, sitar would be fun to play. But I hear that they cost several thousand dollars)
Little Steven's show is good.
That radio station sounds pretty jive turkey.

Does anyone here like Bluegrass? I know most of you are thinking "Oh god, country *vomits*", but the instrumental pieces of most any bluegrass song are amazing. Download "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" by Earl Scruggs, he's basically a pioneer banjo player, he invented the "three-finger-roll" plucking style. Just listen to the song.
The soundtrack to O Brother Where Art Thou has great bluegrass.

That's a lot of acoustic compared to other Floyd albums, it's 50/50.

robo2448 01-16-2006 06:51 PM
Rubber Soul really is the album when The Beatles turned from being a very good band into being a great one in my opinion. They were far better than average on their early '60s albums, but post-Rubber Soul they blow just about everyone out of the water.

Mercifully I've never heard Limp Bizkit try and cover Wish You Were Here, although their cover of Behind Blue Eyes was so abjectly bad that if I never hear a song by them again, it'll be too soon. And yeah, Wish You Were Here was great at Live 8. :)
Agree with everything you said. Rubber Soul was the first Beatle album I bought and really got me into them. Still one of my top 3 probably. But all the Beatles albums are so good. Limp Bizkit's Behind Blue Eyes is one of the worst songs that I have ever heard. I'm glad I've never heard them butcher Wish You Were Here.

np- Fool's Moon

Edit- I love Meddle. I'd say it's the most relaxing Floyd album and best to chill to. Every song on it besides Seamus is awesome. I need to buy it, I only have it on mp3.
That's a lot of acoustic compared to other Floyd albums, it's 50/50.
robo2448 01-16-2006 06:55 PM
Gov't Mule?
Yeah. I'm listening to The Deep End Vol. 1 now. Warren Haynes is a beast.

I was wondering if I was the only one to catch that little mathematical error.

I'd say Animals is 40%, but Pigs on the Wing can hardly be considered 2/5 of that album.
I'd say Animals is 40%, but Pigs on the Wing can hardly be considered 2/5 of that album.
Hey everyone, new topic! Let's calculate the percentage of acoustic songs on every Floyd album! :p

I'd say Atom Heart Mother is 40% because If is somewhat acoustic and Fat Old Sun is acoustic until the solo. Fine, 30% because If is only half acoustic.

jpj 01-16-2006 07:04 PM

Oh, shit I skipped over an electric song.

Rats.

DOUBLE P OST. it might alreadyd have artwork. on dimeadozen that's like, required. just ask him to send it to you or something.

edit: i like the pixies. i maintain that doolittle is better than surfer rosa but a lot of people disagree.

Broken Arrow 01-16-2006 07:23 PM

I've been trying to get some Pixies stuff for along time, anyone wanna YSI something by them over this way.
That is a very good lastfm list. Except for Metallica and The Stones, all of them are great bands. Nice to see some Mission Of Burma love in this forum as well. Unusual.
Med you and your selective music choice. Don't like Stones why I never...
Just a question, maybe you did this on purpose or maybe you didn't but you said all of those bands are great except for the Stones and Metallica. Are you saying that neither band is great? I mean even if you don't like them you have to admit they are great. Then again maybe I'm reading too much into that!
Nice....what Pogues and SDRE have you been listening to?

I've been listening to Rum Sodomy and the Lash, and Streams of Whiskey (Live album) and then I just started listening to If I Should Fall From Grace With God again. As for SDRE I've been listening to Rising Tide but I've listening to "Killed by an Angel" a gillion times I love this song.
Alison Krauss is so good, even on that soundtrack she is the artist that stands out from evey other band. She has quiet the voice.

I like Surfer Rosa over Doolittle, has anyone heard Frank Blacks solo album? I kept hearing about it then I sorta forgot about it, so I don't even know if its out yet.

Limp Bizkit covered a bunch of Jane's Addiction songs. I haven't heard them because I fear it will kill those songs for me. They killed "Behind Blue Eyes" for me which sucks I really liked that song.

Oh hey I've been meaning to ask does any one like Big Star? I only have Third/Sister Lovers and I'm wondering what to get first. I really like their cover of Femme Fatale, its a perfect song any way. I'm thinking about buying this 50 dollar box set of the VU's that has like every song they ever recorded in it, even though I have their S/T, White Light, and Loaded. I'm not sure though...
